Lewis Wherrell produced a scorching performance in the opening race of the weekend at Snetterton to secure his first win of the season in the Wera Tools F4 British Championship, certified by FIA.
Battling not only the competition but the searing temperatures at the Norfolk venue, the JHR Developments driver became the sixth different winner from seven races of the 2026 campaign, beating Scott Kin Lindblom (Hitech) and Dries Van Langendonck (Rodin Motorsport) who completed the podium.
Marking the first leg of a blockbuster double-header for the UK’s premier single-seater series – which concludes at Silverstone’s GP track next weekend, Saturday’s track action began with a fast and furious battle for the CADOLA Pole Position Award in qualifying.
Despite the circuit being almost three miles in length, lap times couldn’t have been closer with the top-five ultimately separated by a remarkable 0.093s, with British-ace Wherrell leading the way, becoming the third different CADOLA Pole Position Award Winner in three weekends this season
Having set the pace across Friday’s two practice sessions, Wherrell continued his fine form with a late surge in qualifying. His best time of 1:48.841s was enough to snare pole position for the weekend’s feature race three, but his second fastest time also ensured that he started from the front for race one.
Adam Al Azhari (Hitech) was another to leave it late to show his hand, however he came up 0.047s short of Wherrell’s benchmark, while Ethan Lennon (Rodin Motorsport) was three thousandths of a second in arrears further back in third.
The small margins continued with Hitech team-mates Theo Palmer and Red Bull Junior Kin Lindblom also showing their front-running potential as they ended the session less than a tenth of a second behind the pole sitter.
Making the perfect launch as the lights went out, Wherrell streaked clear and ultimately dominated in a lights to flag victory. Further down the order, separate incidents at the final corner and then a second at turn one prompted a safety car period to allow marshals to clear the track.
Included in those two aforementioned incidents was Kit Belofsky (Fortec Motorsports), Mate Kodakhidze (Xcel Motorsport), Tommy Harfield (Chris Dittmann Racing) and Cameron Nelson (JHR Developments).
On the restart, Wherrell wasted no time in breaking free of the chasing pack, while Kin Lindblom and Van Langendonck ran line astern behind. As the two jostled for position, the leader pulled clear to ultimately triumph by more than two seconds.
Wherrell reinforced his dominance by also clinching the Lotus Fastest Lap and Rookie Cup honours, the latter of which has moved him to within one point of Jaber Alsabah, who currently sits second in the standings. His win for JHR Developments now sees all eight teams in British F4 with a rostrum apiece – showcasing the intense, closely-fought competition in the seven races so far.
Behind Kin Lindblom and Van Langendonck, Joseph Smith enjoyed a strong outing to get the better of his Virtuosi Racing team-mate George Proudford-Nalder to clinch fourth; with Australian Proudford-Nalder bagging a career-best finish of fifth.
Hot on his heels and rounding out the top ten was Palmer, Lennon, Ethan Jeff-Hall (Argenti Motorsport), Al Azhari and Jarrett Clark (Virtuosi Racing).
The Wera Tools F4 British Championship, certified by FIA will continue at Snetterton on Sunday with two more races at 10:40 and 15:50 respectively, with the final contest forming part of ITV4’s free to air coverage that commences at 10:45 UK time.
