Reigning British F4 champion Matthew Rees today [22 January] picked up his championship trophy at the prestigious Motorsport UK Night of Champions.
The 16-year-old from Cardiff stormed to championship glory in Britain’s FIA Formula 4 series at the first attempt after graduating from karting, including four race victories, ten podium finishes and seven pole positions – including a run of five in succession at the start of the season.
The JHR Developments driver, who will graduate to the GB3 Championship for 2022, received his award at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall along with his fellow award recipients, dignitaries, and members of the motorsport community at the governing body’s traditional annual celebration.
“I’m delighted to collect my championship trophy, and to take part in Motorsport UK’s annual Night of Champions,” said Rees.
“Last season was an incredible challenge. I’m very proud of what JHR Developments and I were able to achieve and look forward to a fresh challenge ahead in GB3 with Steven [Hunter] and the team this year.
“To be here in attendance with such icons of the sport as Sir Jackie Stewart is a really special moment, and it’s very humbling to be recognised at events such as these. Many thanks to Motorsport UK for the invite, and I wish the championship the best going forward.”
The race to follow in Rees’ footsteps has already begun, with four drivers – Aiden Neate, Daniel Guinchard, Ugo Ugochukwu and Edward Pearson – committed to the ten-event, 30-race calendar in support of the British Touring Car Championship.
Seven of Europe’s finest single seater outfits have already purchased the new-for-2022 Tatuus T-421, complete with a Halo-style safety feature, re-inforced side intrusion panels, an Abarth engine and controlled tyres by Pirelli.
Donington Park hosts the opening round of the campaign on 23-24 April.
