Lewis Wherrell moved to within three points of the Wera Tools F4 British Championship, certified by FIA standings summit today (May 30) after claiming a commanding lights-to-flag victory at the Home of British Motor Racing, Silverstone.
Kicking off a spectacular weekend that will conclude with the stars of the UK’s premier single-seater series battling for the coveted BRDC International Trophy on Sunday, the JHR Developments driver was in a league of his own as he tallied his third win in seven days.
Behind him, Adam Al Azhari (Hitech) and Jarrett Clark (Virtuosi Racing) kept their noses clean on a fraught final lap around the world-famous Grand Prix circuit to complete the podium in second and third respectively.
Saturday’s track action began with qualifying and a captivating battle for the CADOLA Pole Position Award that culminated in George Proudford-Nalder (Virtuosi Racing) becoming the fourth different pole sitter of the 2026 season.
Top spot saw several different drivers stake their claim throughout a frenetic session however it was the Australian teenager that surged to the summit in the latter stages to claim double pole position for races one and three.
Hitech’s Theo Palmer left it until his very last lap to secure a front row spot for Sunday’s showpiece race, while Ethan Jeff-Hall (Argenti Motorsport), Wherrell, Al Azhari and championship leader Dries Van Langendonck (Rodin Motorsport) completed the top-six.
After experiencing the highest of highs in qualifying, Proudford-Nalder sadly saw all of his work come undone when the lights went out for race one, as he struggled to launch his machine off the line; which in-turn caused him to plummet down the order as the grid accelerated past his car.
Barring contact between two drivers further down the order, the remaining 31 competitors thankfully managed to avoid Proudford-Nalder at the head of the grid, while Wherrell, like he had done at Snetterton last week, capitalised with a near-perfect start to quickly streak clear into the lead.
Mercedes-AMG Junior Jeff-Hall enjoyed an equally impressive start as he rose from fifth up to second through the opening sequence of corners; however there was no opportunity for him to rest as both Palmer and Van Langendonck loomed large in his mirrors.
Van Langendonck – who is a part of the McLaren F1 Development Driver Programme – would be one that was unable to make an impression early in the race, as he struggled for pace after contact with Joseph Smith (Virtuosi Racing) off the line.
Jaber Alsabah (Xcel Motorsport) would benefit from the Belgian’s lack of speed to move up to fourth although he too faced his own travails as officials handed him a five-second time penalty for a false start.
Back up at the front and with a clear road ahead of him, Wherrell was relentless as he stretched his advantage to more than five seconds, only to then have it negated as the Lotus Safety Car made an appearance following an incident at Copse for Mate Kobakhidze (Xcel Motorsport).
With recovery crews working quickly to move Kobakhidze’s stricken machine, the stage was set for a one-lap shootout to the chequered flag, and there was no denying Wherrell as he dropped the hammer and bolted from the chasing pack.
As Wherrell cantered to victory, drama ensued behind, as Palmer got the better of Jeff-Hall through Maggotts and Becketts, only for the latter to then fight back again at Vale. It set up a thrilling finish as the two ran side-by-side into Brooklands for the final time.
Upon entry into the left-hander, contact between the pair sent Palmer bouncing across the grass and left Jeff-Hall having to fend off Van Langendonck, who had dispatched Alsabah for fourth through Village.
Wherrell would take the maximum haul of points with victory and the Lotus Fastest Lap, as well as Rookie Cup honours, while Jeff-Hall and Van Langendonck crossed the line being separated by just a tenth of a second.
While the pair both took the flag in second and third, they were each subsequently hit with a penalty by officials for their adjudged roles in the aforementioned separate incidents with Smith and Palmer. Jeff-Hall received an additional five-position penalty and Van Langendonck received a five-second time penalty.
Their demise therefore promoted Al Azhari from fourth to second and Jarrett Clark from fifth to third. Timo Jüngling (JHR Developments) was next up in fourth while Palmer was able to recover from his last lap exploits to be classified in fifth.
Completing the top ten was Cameron Nelson (JHR Developments), Cash Felber (Fortec Motorsports), race two pole-sitter Chiara Bättig (Hitech), her Red Bull-backed team-mate Scott Kin Lindblom (Hitech) and Tommy Harfield (Chris Dittmann Racing).
The Wera Tools F4 British Championship, certified by FIA will continue at Silverstone on Sunday with the reverse grid contest taking place at 10:15 before the battle for the BRDC International Trophy commences at 15:50.
Both races will be available to watch via the official British F4 YouTube channel.
