2022 rookie champ Ugochukwu wins Macau GP

Former ROKiT British F4 driver Ugo Ugochukwu has won the 2024 FIA FR World Cup Macau GP, with a composed drive from pole position.

The McLaren junior driver, who clinched the British F4 Rookie Cup title in 2022 at the age of 15, capped an impressive weekend in Macau with victory in the final race, having taken pole in qualifying and held on to P1 through the qualifying race.

With bad weather, red flags and retirements occuring throughout the weekend, the American showed maturity beyond his years to bring it home, impeccably managing several safety car restarts in the main race to maintain his lead and take the chequered flag at the front of the pack.

Speaking after the race, Ugochukwu said: “I can’t describe the feeling, of course I’m super happy.

“It was quite a tricky race, I was pushing the whole way, but I was confident in the pace – ever since Q2 we’ve been really quick, of course we won the Quali race as well, but there was still one more thing to do which was win the main race, and we managed to do it.”

Five other former British F4 drivers were involved at the Macau GP, with Freddie Slater coming oh-so close to a podium finish.

The Brit, running in fourth place on the final lap, went for one final attempt at P3 and fell short, ending his race abruptly as he ground to a halt into the barrier.

Alex Dunne, 2022 British F4 champion, clinched an impressive P6 overall. Bad luck in qualifying put him at P18 for the qualifying race, where he subsequently made up six places, and he continued to make moves in the final race.

Elsewhere, Matteo de Palo finished P5 but was unfortunately disqualified post-race, while Kanato Le and Kai Daryanani were not classified.
