- Championship leader continues run of form with double Oulton Park pole.
- Closest rival Louis Foster only seventh, Skelton set to be Maloney’s biggest competition.
- Ford EcoBoost-powered series begins racing action at 14:20 BST today.
F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost leader Zane Maloney extended his current run of form after taking a double pole position at Oulton Park.
It was JHR Developments’ Josh Skelton that led the way in the opening exchanges, but Maloney struck back in the second half of the session to record a best time of 1:23.379 seconds around the 2.26-mile Cheshire circuit to claim top spot and demote Skelton to second.
The Carlin racer will also start tomorrow’s ITV4-televised final race from pole courtesy of having the best second-fastest lap time, with Skelton once again alongside for company on the front row.
“We were second in both session yesterday but we definitely could have gone better, we were struggling a bit, but that’s what racing is,” said Maloney.
“We went back to the drawing board and found what we needed to do, and it definitely worked! My engineer Anthony looked through it all night, told me what he wanted to do, I told him what I wanted to do and we combined that to create a very good car.
“There are many variables, it’s very technical. There are ten different things you can change for each problem, so you really have to have people with great minds in the team and fast drivers.
“I’ll never be perfect, I had a bit of a bad day yesterday but we bounced back today, had a good night’s sleep, came prepared. I was a bit nervous because we didn’t know what we were coming into, but now those nerves are gone and I’m ready for race one.
“I’m just a small part in this process, there are so many people to thank – all my sponsors, my whole family.”
Just eleven thousandths of a second split the leading Arden Motorsport car of Bart Horsten from Maloney’s team-mate Joe Turney in third and fourth respectively, the latter celebrating his 18th birthday today in the Oulton Park sunshine.
Sebastian Alvarez bounced back from a disappointing afternoon practice on Friday to lead the line for reigning champions Double R Racing, with Carter Williams (JHR) behind in sixth.
Maloney’s closest competition in the points standings, Louis Foster, could only manage seventh despite being less than half a second adrift of the Barbadian racer. Foster starts ahead of local racer Luke Browning, the Richardson Racing driver no doubt aiming for a repeat of his previous heroics so far in 2019.
Alex Connor leads team-mate Tommy Foster (both Arden) in ninth and tenth, with Roberto Faria eleventh in the first of the Fortec machines.
Championship newcomer Alex Walker will line up twelfth in the final JHR entry, with Mariano Martinez and Reema Juffali rounding out the grid in thirteenth and fourteenth.
The opening race from Oulton Park is scheduled to get underway at 14:20 BST later today [29th June].
