Arden Motorsport’s Zak Taylor is looking to capitalise on a positive pre-season programme when he makes his debut in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost at Thruxton this weekend (8-9 May).
The 18-year-old from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire steps into Britain’s FIA Formula 4 series in 2021 after a successful stint in the Ginetta Junior Championship, including numerous Rookie podiums and one outright trip to the rostrum before electing to focus on testing ready for the move to single seaters.
The Motorsport UK Academy athlete chose the front-running Arden outfit as the environment to make the step up, and will be looking to emulate the likes of Lando Norris, Jamie Caroline, Kiern Jewiss and Luke Browning in switching from the highly-competitive tin-top category to F4 with instant success.
“I’m looking forward to the first round at Thruxton,” says Taylor.
“I’ve been working hard over the winter testing programme to make sure I maximise the opportunity this season, and I know I have a great team behind me to make sure we have an excellent season together.”
Switching from tin-tops to ‘slicks and wings’ is a noted step in any driver’s development, but Taylor is feeling confident and ready to take on the opening rounds of the 10-event, 30-race season at Thruxton’s high-speed circuit this weekend.
“Testing has been going well, I’ve been working with the team closely to ensure we go into Thruxton with the best chance possible to achieve the results we all want as a team,” he explained.
“I feel confident in the car I have under me, it’s just down to me to get the job done to the best of my abilities at Round 1.
“Thruxton is a strange one, this year going straight into qualifying on Saturday morning is different to what anyone has been used to in the past, which could spice things up a bit come the reverse grid race!”
Taylor also expressed his hope that spectators can return trackside in the not-too-distant future, one of the highlights of any weekend on the high-profile British Touring Car Championship support package.
“Being back in the TOCA paddock for the second year running, this year on the British F4 package with Arden is great. I’ve missed the buzz you get when in the paddock and with crowds expected back during the season, that will add to the excitement as it will be great to see them return!”
