TEAM NEWS, 10 November, 2014 – Hugely successful Formula 3 team Double R Racing has been revealed as one of the first entrants to join the brand new MSA Formula: Certified by FIA, Powered by Ford EcoBoost series in 2015 with the Woking squad having purchased three cars.

While retaining its presence in F3 next year, with plans to continue in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt’s squad is adding another string to its bow and an extra rung to its single-seater ladder with MSA Formula.

Double R’s decision to compete in the category, which replaces Formula Ford next year on the prestigious Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship support package, will mark the team’s first appearance back on the ‘TOCA Tour’ since 2007 – the final season of Formula BMW UK.

Absolutely thrilled to be part of MSA Formula from the outset, a championship which will be contested over 30 races with three per weekend at the 10 BTCC events, team principal Hieatt is delighted for the Double R name to be back as part of the biggest motor racing bill in the UK.

“We’re obviously very happy to confirm our involvement in MSA Formula, the championship is exactly what the British single-seater scene needed and it’s set to play a key role in the development of the Formula 3 and, beyond that, F1 drivers of tomorrow”, said Hieatt, “The new Mygale chassis looks fantastic and should provide some great racing, just like we used to have in Formula BMW.

“It’s important for Double R to be back on the TOCA package and as far as the youngsters coming out of karting are concerned, it’s pretty much the only show in town in Britain with the live ITV4 coverage and the big crowds trackside. We’re already talking to a lot of drivers for next year, I’m sure we’ll be seeing a full grid of cars for the first round at Brands Hatch next April.”

Powered by a 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine limited to 160bhp, the MSA Formula car also features a six-speed sequential gearbox with steering wheel mounted ‘paddle-shift’ gear change and the cars will run on Hankook tyres, like the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Notably, MSA Formula is the only championship in the UK which will be open to 15-year-old drivers.

Designed to the ‘FIA Formula 4’ blueprint laid down by motorsport’s global governing body, Mygale’s FIA-homologated car meets the required safety criteria applicable for Formula 3-level including front and rear impact structures, anti-intrusion side panels, roll hoops, FIA head restraint system, wheel restraining cables, an FIA safety seat and retractable steering wheel and column.

Double R Racing is expecting to take delivery of its first car next month.
