TEAM NEWS 8 OCTOBER, 2015 – The final round of the 2015 MSA Formula Championship takes place this weekend at Brands Hatch and will see four drivers fighting for the honour of being crowned the inaugural champion. Carlin’s Lando Norris currently holds the championship lead as the last weekend gets underway but he faces competition from three other drivers including team mate Colton Herta who is also in with a shot to clinch the title as his own. For Norris, Herta and Petru Florescu this will be the second visit to Brands Hatch this season albeit this weekend the field will race around the longer Grand Prix configuration.
The three races this weekend will no doubt be a hotly contested affair around the British race circuit as the thrilling season concludes. The inaugural season so far has seen Carlin’s Norris win seven races which in turn has successfully placed him in the lead of the championship – 13 points ahead of his nearest rival Ricky Collard. Herta has also graced the top step of the podium three times and is currently chasing the leading two in third position while Florescu is sitting within the top ten drivers of the championship.
Over the course of the weekend a maximum of 25 points per race is up for grabs before taking into consideration those points gained for the fastest lap and pole position – all of which will no doubt lead to a thrilling showdown as the season concludes.
Returning to the Brands Hatch paddock Norris, Herta and Florescu will all be fighting hard around the Grand Prix configuration. Earlier in the year, the three Carlin men raced around the Brands Hatch Indy layout which resulted in Norris picking up a win and a pole position. Despite the track being longer, at 3.9km, all three will be looking to continue their success of the season and collect further points as the year comes to its conclusion.
Looking ahead to the weekend championship leader Norris said: “I’m not going to approach the weekend any differently to normal because the championship is up for grabs. I know that people are chasing and will be pushing me so I have to concentrate on myself and bringing in those points. I’ve been pretty strong all season in qualifying so I need to continue that to get those additional points too. The main things is to start the weekend well and continue to work hard together. We will keep pushing until the end.”
Herta added: “I’m heading into this weekend feeling confident, we’ve had a good few races so the aim is to finish the season on a high. There’s quite a big gap to second in the championship but it is possible, so to finish second overall would be a great result. I haven’t raced on the GP circuit before but I’ve heard good things about it and having driven it on the sim it looks like a really interesting, drivers circuit so I’m looking forward to getting on track.”
Team mate Petru Florescu said: “It’s the final round of the season and we want to make it count so we will be pushing hard for positions throughout the three races this weekend. Brands Hatch is a circuit we are all familiar with even if this is the longer track than the one we raced on earlier in the year so I’m definitely looking forward to getting out there.”
