Dan’s the man in Donington Park MSA Formula pre-race test

DONINGTON PARK 16 APRIL, 2015 – Dan Ticktum continued today where he left off at Thruxton last week, setting the MSA Formula testing pace at the wheel of his Ford EcoBoost-powered and Fortec-prepared car. The West Sussex 15-year-old emerged on top in the second and third of the day’s Donington test sessions, and ahead for the day overall by a margin of just over a quarter-second.

Behind championship leader Ticktum the times were incredibly close, with less than half a second covering the top nine and a second spanning positions one to 15, setting the scene for a dramatic official qualifying session on Saturday morning.

Round one victor Lando Norris was quickest by eight-hundredths of a second in the first free practice session for the Carlin team, and found more time later on to end the day as one of six drivers under the 68-second mark for the 1.98-mile National circuit at Donington.

JTR’s James Pull ran Ticktum closest, with TRS Arden’s Ricky Collard third fastest ahead of Norris, Sennan Fielding (JHR) and Dan Baybutt (JTR). Collard, who won Round two of the championship a fortnight ago at Brands Hatch, was upbeat about his prospects for the coming race weekend. “The second session was my best,” said Ricky. “We put on new tyres half-way through and if I’m honest maybe I didn’t get quite the best from them; I had a couple of little slides and hairy moments, so to end the session two-tenths down is not disappointing. We have good race pace and should be OK for the weekend.”

Several drivers found out early on that Donington’s kerbs are unforgiving. Among those to damage their cars were Double R’s Gustavo Myasava (who tomorrow celebrates his 19th birthday), Arden’s Sandy Mitchell and Fortec driver Josh Smith. Myasava bounced back well in the later sessions to end the day 10th overall, a tenth slower than his team-mate Matheus Leist, with Mitchell 11th.

Three drivers enjoyed their first official MSA Formula test day, with F3 Cup reigning champion Toby Sowery 14th on his debut with the Falcon Motorsport team; Ollie Pidgley overcoming a variety of niggling car problems to set 19th best time for Richardson Racing and Ameya Vaidyanathan 20th for JTR.

Friday is a rest day at the Leicestershire circuit, with paddock seminars and media training for competitors, ahead of Saturday morning’s official qualifying session and the first of the weekend’s three races in the afternoon.

Ticktum shines at Rockingham in MSA test

  • Dan Ticktum follows up on his test-day successes of Snetterton and Silverstone to claim fastest lap time of the day
  • Less than a second covers top 10 in super-close Rockingham session

ROCKINGHAM, 18 March, 2015 – Dan Ticktum continued his strong run of testing form at Rockingham, the West Sussex 15-year-old claiming fastest time of the day at the wheel of his Ford EcoBoost-powered and Fortec Motorsports-prepared car in the final collective test day of the MSA Formula pre-season.

Just as at Silverstone earlier in the week and at Snetterton at the beginning of the month, Ticktum proved himself more than a match for his rivals, finding nearly a second in pace on fresh tyres in the afternoon session to end the day on top by a quarter of a second.

Carlin team-mates Colton Herta and Lando Norris ran Ticktum closest, with less than a second covering the top 10 on the timesheet. Arden’s Ricky Collard was the quickest in the morning session by two-hundredths from Herta but could not find any extra pace in the generally quicker afternoon session.

One of the biggest improvers of the day was JTR’s Dan Baybutt, who put an early spin into the gravel behind him to find 1.2s in the afternoon to improve to eighth overall, close behind his team-mate James Pull. There were good showings also from Sennan Fielding, seventh on his first proper run in the JHR Developments car, and from Alex Gill, testing a Fortec MSA Formula-Ford for the first time.

The next time the MSA Formula grid will be all together on track against the clock will be at Brands Hatch on 3 April, just ahead of the opening rounds of the championship.

Ticktum times his run to take honours in Silverstone tests

  • Fortec’s Dan Ticktum repeats his Snetterton form to lead the way in well-supported test day at Silverstone

SILVERSTONE, 16 March, 2015 – Dan Ticktum dodged the Silverstone showers today to put the Fortec team on top of the timesheets in the penultimate collective timed test day of the pre-season. Fifteen-year-old Ticktum battled back from problems in the wetter morning sessions which left him 17th of the 18 of the day’s runners, to go quickest in the early afternoon session when the track was at its quickest.

Dan’s Ford EcoBoost-powered chassis lapped the 1.6-mile Silverstone National track in 56.819s: he was the only driver under the 57-second barrier and, as at Snetterton earlier this month, was comfortably quicker than his closest rival, Carlin’s Colton Herta, who was 0.278s adrift. Ticktum also topped the final and wettest session of the day, by six-tenths.

Herta’s team-mate Lando Norris, who headed the morning tests with a 58.101s lap, bettered his time to 57.144s to end the day third fastest overall ahead of TRS Arden drivers Ricky Collard and Sandy Mitchell. JTR’s Dan Baybutt completed the top six, with Double R’s new Brazilian signing, Matheus Leist, impressing on his official debut with seventh-best time.

The MBM team gave the first of its MSA Formula chassis a shakedown run today with Jack Barlow at the wheel, while Falcon Motorsport made progress with its new car, Connor Hall driving.

The final test day of the run-up to the championship’s start is at Rockingham on Wednesday.

Karting star Ticktum confirmed for MSA Formula

  • 15-year-old Daniel Ticktum joins his karting rival Josh Smith at Fortec Motorsports for his first car-racing experience
  • Team says there’s ‘no question’ about his talent at the wheel

240215_ticktumw24 February, 2015 – Another superstar driver from the world of karting is to step up to car racing with MSA Formula. The crack Fortec Motorsports team today announces that 15-year-old Daniel Ticktum is to join its squad this season to race one of its Ford EcoBoost-powered chassis.

Sussex-based Ticktum rose to prominence in cadet karting in 2011, when he won the ‘grand slam’ of four national titles, including Formula Kart Stars and the British Open Championship. Two seasons later he finished second in the CIK FIA European championship and British Super One. Last year he contested the WSK Champions Cup with Zanardi Strakka Racing.

He’s excited to be taking on the challenge of the FIA-certified MSA Formula championship: “It’s amazing to make the step up from karting and I’m really happy to have signed with Fortec to race in the new MSA Formula. It’s the perfect place to kick-start my single-seater career. I’ve already done a bit of pre-season testing and the car feels great.”

Fortec team manager Daniel Mitchell said of his new charge: “It’s a great signing for Fortec: there’s absolutely no question of his talent so it is down to us now to provide him with the equipment. Pre-season testing so far has been positive but we feel as a team there is still a lot more to come.” Fortec is one of the largest and most successful teams contesting MSA Formula, with a long history of victories in Renault World Series, Formula 3, Formula Renault and GT racing.

Ticktum is the seventh teenage British karting frontrunner to opt for MSA Formula as the launchpad for their car-racing careers. Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver Josh Smith will be Daniel’s Fortec running mate, while the Carlin team has signed Lando Norris and TRS Arden have Sandy Mitchell and Enaam Ahmed on board. JTR will meanwhile field James Pull and Dan Baybutt.

Frontrunners for the inaugural MSA Formula crown will take part in the first collective test of the season on Thursday at Brands Hatch, gaining vital experience of the Kent circuit which will host the opening rounds of the live-televised championship 4/5 April.

MSA Formula – Certified by FIA, Powered by Ford EcoBoost is Britain’s official version of the FIA’s Formula 4 concept and will be the British Touring Car Championship’s single-seater support series, enjoying live TV coverage and bumper raceday spectator attendance. The championship will be decided over 30 races; three at each of the 10 BTCC meetings to be held between April and October.

The winning driver will hold the title FIA Formula 4 Champion of Great Britain, and will earn 10 Grand Prix Superlicence points to get his or her career off to a flying start, in addition to being awarded a career-enhancing test drive with a leading FIA Formula 3 team.
