Hauger heads super-close Rockingham test

  • Arden’s Dennis Hauger beats team-mate Patrik Pasma to top spot by three-hundredths of a second.
  • Top 10 covered by less than a second at the Speedway.

2 AUGUST, 2018 – Just days after taking his fourth win in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost, Dennis Hauger found himself on top once again in testing at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

Arden’s fine run of form showed no sign of letting up on the back of two wins and a one-two finish at the weekend, with Hauger recording the quickest time of the test in the morning – a lap of 1m 19.515s. Team-mate Patrik Pasma followed up by setting the pace in the afternoon with a time just 0.030s adrift of Hauger.

The battle for supremacy on the timesheet was a closely fought affair among the leading protagonists, with Kiern Jewiss and Jack Doohan (Arden) completing the top four and both within less than two tenths of a second of Hauger’s time.

Jewiss’ Double R Racing team-mate and the newest member of the British F4 winners’ club Paavo Tonteri completed the top five, edging out Manuel Sulaiman and Johnathan Hoggard. The latter pair the quickest runners for their respective teams, JHR Developments and Fortec Motorsports.

Sebastian Priaulx and Sebastian Alvarez ensured that all Arden and Double R Racing prepared cars wound up in the top-10. The two drivers sandwiching Fortec Motorsports’ Hampus Ericsson on the timesheet.

The F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost will be back in action at Rockingham Motor Speedway in just over a week on 11/12 August for the upcoming rounds of the season.

Jewiss stays on top in Snetterton test

  • Kiern Jewiss leaves it late to secure top spot on the timesheet.
  • Manuel Sulaiman shines on final day of test.

18 JULY, 2018 – Kiern Jewiss maintained his position at the top of the timesheets by recording the fastest time on the second and final day of testing at Snetterton for the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

Just as the Double R racer did yesterday, he saved his best until the end of the afternoon session to have the last laugh. With less than 10 minutes left on the clock Jewiss pumped in a lap of 1m 51.726s and then proceeded to better it moments later with a 1m 51.698s.

It put him 0.272s clear of JHR Developments’ Manuel Sulaiman who put in a fine testing performance as the only other driver to break the 1m 52s barrier on the second day of running.

Morning pacesetter Paavo Tonteri (Double R Racing) wound up third on the combined classification, with Jack Doohan (Arden) fourth fastest, ahead of Arden team-mates Sebastian Priaulx and Dennis Hauger.

Ayrton Simmons’ best lap times from the morning and afternoon were within a tenth of each other, underlining the JHR Developments driver’s consistency.

Meanwhile Hampus Ericsson recorded the quickest time of any Fortec Motorsports driver during the two day test to go fifth fastest in the afternoon and eighth on the combined classification, ahead of Patrik Pasma (Arden) and team-mate Johnathan Hoggard.

Attention now turns to the upcoming rounds of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost which will take place at Snetterton on 28/29 July.

  • Kiern Jewiss quickest on day one of testing in Norfolk.
  • Dennis Hauger and Arden run him closest.

17 JULY, 2018 – The F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost got back into gear with testing at Snetterton following the summer break and it was Kiern Jewiss who set the pace.

Championship leader Jewiss showed his hand late in the afternoon to rattle off a succession of rapid laps in the 1m 51s bracket. The Double R ace the first man to break the 1m 52s barrier. His best time of 1m 51.625s put him 0.247s clear of closest challenger Dennis Hauger.

It was yet another strong showing from Hauger who wound up second fastest in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Arden team-mate Sebastian Priaulx’s morning pacesetting time of 1m 52.230s was enough to secure him third on the combined classification, edging out Paavo Tonteri (Double R Racing) by a mere 0.026s.

The Arden pair of Jack Doohan and Patrik Pasma wound up next on the combined classification in fifth and sixth respectively, ahead of Ayrton Simmons (JHR Developments).

Late flurries from Johnathan Hoggard (Fortec Motorsports), Manuel Sulaiman (JHR Developments) and Hampus Ericsson (Fortec Motorsports) ensured top 10 spots on the timing sheet for the trio, ahead of Jamie Sharp (Sharp Motorsport) in 11th who improved upon his morning’s best time by over two seconds in the afternoon.

Doohan and Arden top the times on day two at Croft

  • Doohan gets the better of afternoon pacesetter Hauger by just 0.003s.
  • Top six drivers covered by only 0.220s over two days of testing.

5 JUNE, 2018 – Jack Doohan and Arden set the pace on day two of official testing at Croft for the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

Having missed out on topping day one of the test by 0.006s, Doohan went one better on the final day at the 2.125-mile North Yorkshire track.

Just as he had done on day one, he recorded the quickest time of anybody in the morning session with a lap of 1m 20.801s. On this occasion however it proved unbeaten for the remainder of the day’s running, albeit by a very small margin as Dennis Hauger lapped within 0.003s of his Arden team-mate in the afternoon.

Johnathan Hoggard (Fortec Motorsports) recorded the fourth fastest time to split the Double R pair of Paavo Tonteri and Kiern Jewiss in the combined classification for Tuesday.

Tonteri and Jewiss’ Tuesday efforts, as well as Hauger’s, ensured that the trio joined Ayrton Simmons, Doohan and Hoggard in the 1m 20s bracket. The six drivers separated by little more than a couple of tenths over two days.

No driver was able to better the time recorded by Simmons on day one – a lap of 1m 20.727s. The championship leader was not in attendance for the second day of testing, along with JHR Developments team-mate Josh Skelton, as well as Jamie Sharp (Sharp Motorsport) and Christian Lester (Rosso Verde Racing).

Behind Jewiss on the Tuesday timesheets could be found Arden’s Sebastian Priaulx and Patrik Pasma. Priaulx the only driver to hit a century of laps.

Hampus Ericsson (Fortec Motorsports) and Sebastian Alvarez (Double R Racing) wound up eighth and ninth. Meanwhile, JHR Developments’ Manuel Sulaiman spent a significant chunk of the afternoon session at the top of the times and denied Fortec Motorsports’ Lucca Allen a spot in the top 10.

Attention now turns to this weekend (9/10 June), when the next rounds of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost will take place at Oulton Park.

Simmons edges out Doohan on day one of Croft test

  • Little to separate pacesetters on day one of Croft test, as championship leader Ayrton Simmons gets the better of Jack Doohan by a mere 0.006s.

4 JUNE, 2018 – Ayrton Simmons and JHR Developments edged out Jack Doohan and Arden on day one of a two day test at Croft for the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

The pair were consistently quick throughout the day’s running, Simmons once again showcasing the front-running pace which sees him currently leading the championship.

Meanwhile, Red Bull Junior Team driver Doohan picked up where he left off just over two weeks ago when he claimed his maiden single-seater win at Thruxton.

Doohan got the better of Simmons in the morning session, beating him to the top of the times by just 0.013s. He looked set to finish the afternoon quickest too, only for Simmons to pump in a 1m 20.727s lap with little more than five minutes on the clock to go 0.006s clear of the Aussie.

Johnathan Hoggard wasn’t far behind, finding plenty of pace in the afternoon to lap just a tenth adrift and become one of only three drivers to break the 1m 21s barrier.

The Fortec Motorsports driver ended up ahead of Thruxton double race winner Kiern Jewiss (Double R Racing), with Dennis Hauger just 0.009s shy of Jewiss.

Hauger’s team-mate Patrik Pasma wound up seventh, while Hampus Ericsson (Fortec Motorsports) split the Arden duo.

Behind Pasma on the timesheet could be found fellow flying Finn Paavo Tonteri (Double R Racing), with Sebastian Priaulx (Arden) and Manuel Sulaiman (JHR Developments) completing the top 10.

Of note was the official testing debut of Christian Lester and Rosso Verde Racing, as part of an acclimatisation process with a view to entering the F4 British Championship in future.

Testing at Croft resumes tomorrow, before the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost heads to Oulton Park for the upcoming rounds of the season on 9/10 June.

Doohan and Arden top the times at Thruxton in British F4 free practice

  • Doohan and Arden quickest at Thruxton by almost half a second.
  • All three Double R drivers finish the session in the top five, with Jewiss quickest and proving Doohan’s closest challenger.

18 MAY, 2018 – Jack Doohan and Arden were quickest in free practice at Thruxton for the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost. Doohan rose to the top of the times with two thirds of the session left on the clock, and would stay there until the chequer.

The Aussie remained one step ahead of the field. Although the times set by his rivals tumbled, so did his. The Red Bull Junior driver consistently improved and wrapped up the session in style with a final flourish. A lap of 1m 13.175s with five minutes remaining saw him go 0.420s faster than his closest challenger Kiern Jewiss, as well as 0.089s quicker than the qualifying lap record set by Sandy Mitchell and Arden in 2015.

“This has been a really good start to the weekend for us,” said Doohan. “It’s only practice of course, but I feel like I’m driving well.

“I didn’t really know where I was on the timesheet. I was just focusing on getting the best out of myself and going as fast as possible.

“There’s definitely more in the tank, because my quickest lap wasn’t perfect. I got a tow behind Priaulx after recording a really strong time in the first sector and just pieced the lap together, using the tyre in the right way.

“We kept on getting better and better out on track. We set our best time on older tyres so there should be more to come on new tyres if we can hook the lap up.

“I know there’s more to come from me too. This is only my third race weekend in British F4 and it’s my first season racing cars. I’m confident I will only get stronger as the year goes on.”

It was another strong start to the weekend for Double R Racing’s Jewiss, who looks increasingly accustomed to occupying the top spots on the timesheets and showcasing front-running pace.

“It was a good session for us,” commented Jewiss. “That was a really quick lap from Doohan. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a time similar to that here. I feel that if they’ve gone for a very stiff setup to get that time, it’s going not going to work around here in the races because it’s going to work the tyres too hard.

“We’ll see what we can do tonight. The car felt pretty good on track so let’s see what happens. I think the pace is there and the team is working really well.

“At Donington Park we were able to attack really well and I think we are definitely capable of doing the same here.

“At Thruxton it’s possible to get a really good tow which means that you can come up through the order and perhaps being on pole isn’t the biggest advantage because you risk being under more pressure from drivers behind in the slipstream.

“Nevertheless, the goal is always to be quickest and to secure pole in qualifying. We’ll certainly give our all tomorrow to achieve that.”

Jewiss’ team-mate Sebastian Alvarez and Arden driver Dennis Hauger recorded identical times in third and fourth, while Paavo Tonteri ensured all three Double R-prepared cars finished the session in the top five.

Next on the timesheet could be found the JHR Developments pair of Ayrton Simmons and Manuel Sulaiman. The duo left it until later in the session to show more of their hand and look very likely to be in the fight for honours this weekend. Meanwhile, team-mate Josh Skelton wound up eighth, sandwiched between Arden’s Patrik Pasma and Sebastian Priaulx.

Hampus Ericsson was best of the Fortec Motorsports trio in 11th, ahead of Donington Park race winner Johnathan Hoggard and Lucca Allen, with Jamie Sharp (Sharp Motorsport) in 14th.

Qualifying gets underway at 1125 tomorrow with the first race of the weekend taking place at 1610. Two more races follow on Sunday at 1250 and 1625, with both being broadcast live on ITV4.

Clean sweep for Jewiss in British F4 free practice at Donington Park

  • Jewiss and Double R Racing fastest in both free practice sessions.
  • Patrik Pasma and Paavo Tonteri join Jewiss in 1m 7s bracket.

26 APRIL, 2018 – Kiern Jewiss and Double R Racing set a scintillating pace to top both free practice sessions at Donington Park in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

The MB Partners backed driver followed up his pacesetting exploits in free practice one by smashing through the 1m 8s barrier in free practice two to record a lap of 1m 07.546s. A time that was 0.122s quicker than the British F4 qualifying record at the circuit, held by McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Dan Ticktum. The question now is whether Jewiss can go on to break the record in qualifying on Saturday?

Anthony Hieatt’s Double R squad looks to have picked up from where it left off, having topped the times on Monday in official testing. Its strong pace was underlined today by Paavo Tonteri who wound up third fastest overall and the quickest rookie.

Splitting the Double R pair on timesheet was Arden’s Patrik Pasma. The Finn had a storming end to free practice two, rattling off a succession of rapid laps to take second and become the only driver other than Jewiss and Tonteri to break the 1m 8s barrier.

Johnathan Hoggard was one of the standout performers in Monday’s official test, and that was no different in free practice. Third in the morning and fourth in the afternoon highlighting the Fortec Motorsports driver as one to watch this weekend.

Behind Hoggard on the timesheet it was incredibly evenly matched, with fifth to ninth covered by just 0.054s and suggesting that the qualifying order will be decided by the smallest of margins.

Arden’s Sebastian Priaulx proved quickest of the quintet with a lap of 1m 08.180s ahead of Manuel Sulaiman (JHR Developments), Jack Doohan (Arden), Sebastian Alvarez (Double R) and championship leader Ayrton Simmons (JHR Developments).

Meanwhile, Simmons’ team-mate Josh Skelton just squeezed into the top 10, edging out Dennis Hauger (Arden) by 0.012s. The latter having recorded the second fastest time in free practice one.

Friday is a rest day at the Leicestershire circuit, ahead of Saturday morning’s official qualifying session at 1055 and the first of the weekend’s three races in the afternoon at 1600.

Tonteri on top in British F4 test at Donington Park

  • Tonteri quickest at Donington Park.
  • Jewiss tops morning session.
  • Double R duo lock-out top two spots on the timesheets as the only drivers to break the 1m 8s barrier.
  • Fortec Motorsports’ Johnathan Hoggard proves closest challenger.

23 APRIL, 2018 – Paavo Tonteri and Double R Racing got off to a flying start at Donington Park ahead of the second meeting of the 2018 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost this weekend, by setting the pace in official testing on Monday 23 April.

It was a hugely encouraging day for Anthony Hieatt’s Double R squad which had a stranglehold on the top of the timesheets thanks to Tonteri and Kiern Jewiss.

Jewiss got the better of Tonteri early on and went into the lunch break having recorded the quickest time of the morning. The pair separated by a mere 0.014s.

There was more to come from the Double R duo in the afternoon, as they were the only drivers to break the 1m 8s barrier. Tonteri turning the tables on Jewiss to come out on top by a margin of 0.238s with a lap of 1m 7.681s.

Their closest challenger was Fortec Motorsports’ Johnathan Hoggard who wound up third fastest in both sessions, underling the 16-year-old’s excellent pace and consistency.

Sebastian Priaulx was quickest of the Arden runners in fourth. Like the majority of the field, his best time of 1m 8.167s came in the afternoon.

Priaulx and team-mate Dennis Hauger sandwiched Manuel Sulaiman on the timesheet, after the latter pumped in a 1m 8.274s lap, with just 15 minutes of the test remaining.

Meanwhile championship leader Ayrton Simmons had to settle for seventh, just 0.023s off of his JHR Developments team-mate.

Patrik Pasma’s best lap in the morning, a 1m 8.345, proved to be the Finn’s quickest of the test to earn him eighth on the combined timesheet, while Josh Skelton was the biggest improver. The JHR Developments driver bettered his morning’s quickest lap by almost half a second in the afternoon, with Hampus Ericsson (Fortec Motorsports) completing the top 10 just 0.029s further back.

Ford’s rising young stars won’t have long to wait until they are back on track, with free practice taking place on Thursday this week at Donington Park ahead of the second meeting of the season on 28/29 April.

Hauger and Arden on top again in British F4 testing

  • Red Bull Junior Team driver Dennis Hauger quickest in Norfolk for Arden.
  • Fortec Motorsports’ Johnathan Hoggard proves Hauger’s closest challenger.

21 MARCH, 2018 – Arden’s Dennis Hauger picked up where he left off by setting the pace in official pre-season testing for the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost at Snetterton today, having topped the times in the test at Rockingham last week.

Similarly to the Rockingham test, it was Fortec Motorsports’ Johnathan Hoggard who was Hauger’s closest challenger. The two drivers traded blows at the top of the times for much of the day.

Hoggard proved the quicker of the two in the afternoon session with a 1m 52.228s lap, but it was not enough to beat Hauger’s lap of 1m 52.074s which was set by the Norwegian in the morning.

Hauger’s Arden team-mate and fellow Red Bull Junior Jack Doohan joined the front-running party too. A lap of 1m 52.308s over half a second quicker than his morning’s best and enough to see the Aussie go third on the combined timesheet.

Patrik Pasma and Sebastian Priaulx ensured all of Arden’s runners broke the 1m 53s barrier around the 3-mile Norfolk circuit, ending up fifth and sixth respectively.

Ayrton Simmons was the quickest JHR Developments driver, occupying fourth on the timesheet having recorded a lap half a second faster than team-mate Manuel Sulaiman.

Behind Sulaiman could be found the Fortec Motorsports duo of Hampus Ericsson and Lucca Allen with Jamie Sharp (Sharp Motorsport) in 10th.

The start of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost is now just weeks away, with the season opener set to take place at Brands Hatch on 7/8 April.

  • Hauger and Hoggard share testing spoils.
  • Ginetta Junior graduates Jewiss and Priaulx continue to impress.

14 MARCH, 2018 – Dennis Hauger set the quickest time in yesterday’s official pre-season test for the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

14-year-old Hauger completed a superb testing performance around the 1.94-mile Northamptonshire circuit for Arden, climbing to the top of the times with a 1m 18.547s lap with less than an hour of the test remaining.

It put the Red Bull Junior Team driver 0.044s clear of morning pacesetter Johnathan Hoggard, who pumped in a time of 1m 18.591s just before the lunch break.

“Today has been a really good,” said Hauger. “I really enjoy driving around this circuit and I’m looking forward to coming back here to race in August.

“To set the fastest lap was fantastic, especially now there is not long until the first race. We only have one more test before the start of the season so it’s great to see that the pace is there.

“We have worked very hard to find a setup that enables us to produce consistently quick lap times, while looking after the tyres. I think we have found it and that’s going to prove so important for the races.

“This is only my first year racing in cars so to have test days like today when there are a mix of track conditions really helps with the learning process. The track started off quite wet and then dried out. That gives you the chance to improve your understanding of how the car behaves in different conditions.”

Said morning pacesetter Hoggard: “It’s been a really positive test for us with P1 in the morning and top three in afternoon.

“Compared to last year I’ve had a lot more time to prepare and really focus on what I’m doing. Everything feels more natural. There is still room for improvement, but I’ve come a long way since last season and I’m feeling much stronger.

“There’s some more work we need to do back at base and on the simulator to be completely ready, but we’ll get there in time for the start of the season.

“The winter break was a great opportunity to recharge the batteries, but it’s brilliant to be back behind the wheel on days like today to showcase the excellent pace we have.”

It was another impressive showing from Kiern Jewiss who arrived having set the pace in the first official pre-season test at Brands Hatch last month. The Double R driver finished second quickest in both the morning and afternoon sessions. His best lap of 1m 18.758s came in the afternoon and was just over two tenths shy of Hauger.

Behind Jewiss on the timesheet could be found fellow Ginetta Junior graduate Sebastian Priaulx (Arden) who completed the leading quartet of drivers capable of breaking the 1m 19s barrier.

2017 Ford F4 Challenge Cup champion Hampus Ericsson looked assured out on track, completing a comprehensive programme for Fortec Motorsports and improved upon his morning’s best time by over half a second in the afternoon.

The experienced Ayrton Simmons (JHR Developments) came to the fore when conditions were at their most difficult during the initial morning’s running. It saw the field having to contend with a very damp circuit and called for the use of Hankook’s wet tyres. A solid day’s work followed for the British F4 race winner on the way to sixth in the combined classification.

Patrik Pasma and Jack Doohan ensured that all four Arden-prepared cars were inside the top 10. The latter completing a mammoth 133 laps – more than any other driver.

The Double R duo of Paavo Tonteri and Sebastian Alvarez sandwiched 10th place man Lucca Allen on the combined classification. Allen finding plenty of room for improvement between the two sessions, much like team-mate Ericsson.

Manuel Sulaiman and Jamie Sharp completed less laps than they would have liked. Their running was limited due to an off and a technical gremlin respectively, while Sulaiman’s JHR Developments team-mate Josh Skelton wound up 14th.

Ford’s young stars are back in action in just seven days, with the next official pre-season test taking place at Snetterton on Wednesday 21 March. All roads then lead to the season opener at Brands Hatch on 7/8 April.
