York takes second Ford EcoBoost-powered win of career

  • Fast-starting York scores win number two of campaign.

30 SEPTEMBER, 2017 – Fortec Motorsports’ Oliver York seized the initiative in a dramatic race at Brands Hatch to take his second win in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

Having made an excellent getaway which almost saw him take second place in the opening exchanges from front row starter Patrik Pasma; York pulled off more start line heroics after the race was restarted following a red flag on lap two after a collision involving Harry Dyson, Jamie Sharp and Lucas Alecco Roy.

The Fortec Motorsports racer shot off the line and squeezed through a gap not much wider than a British F4 car between Manuel Sulaiman and Pasma to take the lead. The latter taking to pit lane for a nosecone change. Fastest lap of the race acting as some consolation.

In second place Manuel Sulaiman was soon under pressure from Jamie Caroline who, having been crowned FIA British Formula 4 Champion in the preceding race, was determined to celebrate in the best way possible by pushing to the absolute limit.

The Warlingham racer pulled off some audacious overtakes to make quick progress up the order from eighth. A particular highlight was his pass on race one winner Linus Lundqvist into Paddock Hill Bend on lap two; Caroline leaving it late to dive down Lundqvist’s inside, locking his front right tyre and just holding on to make the corner without running off the track.

Starting sixth at the restart provided Caroline with the opportunity to entertain with another trademark storming start, overtaking several cars around the outside of turn one and he ultimately dispatched Sulaiman with a precision move through Clearways.

It left York having to fend off the advancing Caroline for the lead and he did so brilliantly to cross the finish line just 0.330s ahead of Caroline.

Said York: “My first start was really good, but the second start was even better. The initial launch was spot on and it helped propel me into the lead before the first corner.

“I thought we were going to crash because the gap was incredibly tight as Manuel and Patrik began to close it down, but thankfully I came out unscathed!

“I had the advantage over Caroline through turns three and four. It’s quite hard to overtake here and getting the initial gap was a big help in keeping him at bay.

“It’s a great result for the team to get this win at the end of the season and we bounced back brilliantly from the disappointment of qualifying when we couldn’t show our true pace after a trip into the wall.”

Added Caroline: “I was so close to hitting Linus when I made that move. He didn’t give me much room, but I thought I would send it up the inside with a bold attack.

“Second place is a great result from eighth on the grid. York had newer tyres than me in that race and that was the difference in the end.

“Tomorrow we’ll aim to end the campaign in style. It would be fantastic to make it 11 wins for the season. I’ve got to make my records harder for future drivers in this championship to beat!”

Behind the leading pair, JHR Developments driver Sulaiman was putting on an exemplary display of defensive driving as Logan Sargeant, Oscar Piastri and Ayrton Simmons hunted him down for the final podium spot. Sulaiman was resolute however and refused to crack under the pressure, positioning his car perfectly to bring home his maiden British F4 podium.

Said an ecstatic Sulaiman: “My first start was really good. It was fantastic to be out front for the first couple of laps, leading the race.

“Although we couldn’t quite get the win, I’m so happy to get my first podium in the series. It’s a brilliant result for the team and I. We’ve been working so hard for this.

“To finish the year on a high like this is special. We have been fast in all conditions this weekend so it’s great to turn that pace into a strong result. I think we really showed that pace too in the battle with Sargeant. To keep him behind shows how far we have come in such a short space of time.”

TRS Arden’s Olli Caldwell put in one of his best performances of the season to finish seventh after holding off the experienced pairing of Linus Lundqvist and Alex Quinn.

Caldwell’s strong points finish was made even sweeter as he secured his second Ford F4 Challenge Cup win of the day with fellow Challenge Cup runners Harry Webb, Lucca Allen and Hampus Ericsson finishing 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.

Richardson Racing’s Webb will be happiest of the trio, extending his Challenge Cup lead by six more points to give him a nine point advantage over Ericsson heading into the final race of the season. Meanwhile Falcon Motorsport’s Allen battled brilliantly to keep Ericsson behind him and take the final podium spot in the Class.

“Hampus had a good qualifying which put him ahead of us in race one, but then he had an off in the first race and we’ve just capitalised from there,” said Caldwell.

“Being able to hold Lundqvist back, a driver who has fought at the front all year is a great result for me. It felt like we were slightly quicker too so that makes me really happy.

“My restart after the red flag was really good and I got Karl Massaad off the line which is important because it put another driver between myself and the rest of the Challenge Cup runners.

“I would love to make it a hat-trick of Challenge Cup wins this weekend. We’ve done it twice today so hopefully it can be third time lucky tomorrow.”

The season finale is set for 1502 on Sunday and will be televised live on ITV4.

16 SEPTEMBER, 2017 – TRS Arden and Alex Quinn shone at Silverstone to take victory in Round 25 of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost, ahead of Oliver York and Oscar Piastri after a dramatic finish hit by torrential rain.

Silverstone has proved a happy hunting ground for Quinn. It was the scene of his British F4 Rookie title triumph in 2016, which he capped off with a fantastic win at the Northamptonshire circuit.

Starting on the front row the Cornish racer was determined to add another victory to his name at the home of British Motor Racing and he duly delivered. A lightning start saw him get the jump on team-mate and poleman Oscar Piastri.

Piastri made life difficult for Quinn in the opening stages, refusing to let him escape while bringing Oliver York (Fortec Motorsports) and Jamie Caroline (Carlin) with him. Caroline having already made up two places on the first lap.

As the race progressed Quinn eventually managed to break free of Piastri’s clutches. The heavens opened with just two laps remaining, but Quinn remained unfazed out front. The 16-year-old danced his way around the 1.64 mile circuit on slick tyres in the pouring rain to take his third win of the campaign.

“I got Oscar off the line which is what I was aiming to do because to go head to head in the race would have been more tricky considering the way things are in the championship battle. We have to keep maximising the points.

“I knew the start was my best and safest opportunity to get the job done so I’m really happy to have pulled it off.

“It wasn’t easy after the start though because Oscar was very quick at the beginning, but I eventually managed to pull out a bit of a gap.

“Then I saw a massive black cloud overhead and knew the rain was coming. I stayed calm, didn’t push too hard and it paid off.

“I was trying to pay attention to how much rain was on my visor and how much water there was on the track. The last lap was like driving into the unknown, but I’ve always liked these conditions throughout my career.”

Behind Quinn the situation was far less straightforward. After Caroline got the better of York with a bold move to take third just before the rain began to fall, the championship leader moved to double his fun as he attempted to pass and pull away from chief title rival Piastri on the final lap.

It resulted in a spin for Caroline, forcing Piastri to take evasive action. The Aussie took a wide line and hit the brakes. York promptly capitalised to take second, diving up the inside of both drivers.

“Overall it was a good race for us,” commented York. “We had the pace throughout. Even when the rain came down we were something like a second quicker than anyone else on the last lap when we took second place.

“Jamie went for a late move and I had to back out really otherwise it could have ended very differently. Then it started to rain and he was sideways through Brooklands after a half spin. It forced Oscar out wide and it gave me the opportunity to scythe up the inside the pair of them.

“I think I was a little held back by Oscar which meant I couldn’t attack Quinn for the win. I’m still happy to get second which means plenty more points in the championship so we can continue to target a top five finish in the championship at the end of the season.

“This is my third podium in four races so it’s great to have this kind of consistency and is a sign of our strength.”

“The start was not good at all,” said Piastri. “I didn’t have enough heat in the tyres which meant I couldn’t get the traction I wanted off the line.

“I felt I was faster than Alex in the opening laps, but as the race progressed I didn’t have the life in the tyres that he did which meant I couldn’t quite keep up with him.

“The heavens opened on the final two laps and I was probably a bit too cautious. On the last lap Jamie went for a bold move and spun in front of me. I had nowhere to go other than slam on the brakes and that let York through.

“I’m not happy with the result, but it could have been a lot worse. We finished on the podium and in front of Jamie so that’s still positive.”

A below-par qualifying for Double R Racing’s Linus Lundqvist and TRS Arden’s Ayrton Simmons meant the stage was set for them to come storming through the field from 15th and 11th respectively. Both took no prisoners as they flew up the order, each making up four places on just the opening lap. The duo put on a display of overtaking that was a feast for the eyes, with Simmons finishing fifth and Lundqvist sixth. Simmons recording fastest lap of the race in the process.

Behind them finished Carlin’s Logan Sargeant, while eighth place for Hoggard earnt the Fortec Motorsports racer points and pole position for tomorrow’s partially reversed grid race.

Team-mate Hampus Ericsson had to settle for ninth despite a spell in sixth, but with Falcon Motorsport’s Lucca Allen and TRS Arden’s Olli Caldwell in 14th and 17th respectively, Ericsson secured his seventh Ford F4 Challenge Cup win. It leaves him tied with Oliver York for most wins in the Class this season.

“The Challenge Cup is the main thing to win and that’s what I have got my sights set on,” explained Ericsson. “To get another win in the Class again today was so important.

“At one point in the race I was sixth, but I went off the track and had to settle for ninth.

“I don’t like the rain much, but I enjoyed it on the slicks. It was a lot of fun!

“The overtake I made on Sargeant into Brooklands was so cool. I got in the slipstream and went around the outside of him. It was a really special move that I’m very proud of.

“Whenever I’m battling with the title contenders like that it’s really exciting and proves that I’m able to fight at the front.”

Carlin’s Patrik Pasma completed the top 10 ahead of Double R’s Karl Massaad. Meanwhile JHR Developments driver Harry Dyson put on a fine display on his competitive single-seater debut, picking his way expertly through the field from last on the grid to finish 12th.

The Ford EcoBoost action continues tomorrow with Round 26 at 1115 when Hoggard will be gunning for his maiden win in the series from pole. The final race of the weekend will be broadcast live on ITV4 and is scheduled for 1630. Piastri will be the poleman once again, with the aim of converting it into his sixth win of the season in a bid to take the title battle to the final meeting of the season.

However, Jamie Caroline will have other ideas and can take the title tomorrow if he has increased his championship lead from 71.5 to at least 75 points once the chequered flag falls on the final race.

Piastri puts it on pole, as TRS Arden secures front row lock out at Silverstone

16 SEPTEMBER, 2017 – Oscar Piastri carried his front-running Friday form into qualifying on Saturday at Silverstone for the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost with a sublime double pole position. Team-mate Alex Quinn left it late to qualify second and in doing so ensured TRS Arden secured its third front row lock out of the campaign.

Piastri could be found at the top of the timesheet for much of the 20 minute session. However, he was pushed hard, not only by team-mate Quinn, but Fortec Motorsports’ Oliver York. The Andy Priaulx Sports Management backed rising star enjoyed a spell on provisional pole, briefly breaking Piastri’s stranglehold on the session with a 57.873s lap with just under five minutes remaining.

Piastri promptly responded with a 57.743s lap and then proceeded to better it on his following flying laps. A 57.610s would prove to be his best and his string of fast laps earnt him pole for the final race of the weekend based on second-fastest times.

“I went out there and did exactly what I needed to do,” said poleman Piastri. “It’s going to be tough to get the championship now with the gap to Jamie Caroline. All I can do is get pole positions and wins and we’ll see what happens.

“I’ve been fast every time I’ve been here and we were fastest for pretty much the whole session. I’m really pleased with my performance and as a team we’re performing so well.

“I knew my pace was pretty strong because I was able to close up to Jamie pretty comfortably when I was behind him on track earlier in the session.

“We were P2 in the dry yesterday and P1 in the wet, and this morning I have put it on pole so I think we’re in a very good place whatever the conditions will be during the rest of the weekend.”

Quinn crashed the front row party in the dying seconds of the session on his final run with a lap of 57.826s, demoting York to third alongside team-mate Hampus Ericsson. The latter putting in his best qualifying performance of the season to earn a front row grid slot in the final race of the weekend.

“It was very difficult out there, the track was improving every lap and I managed to pull a lap out of the bag on my final flyer,” explained Quinn. “It’s great that Oscar got pole and we have another front row lock out for the team.”

“It’s going to be a close race, particularly the battle between myself at Oscar and especially at the start. Hopefully we can bring home big points for the team.

“I was a bit worried when the red flag came out because I wasn’t sure I could get the temperature in the tyres in time, but I stayed calm, brought the tyres in and just got the temperatures right on my final lap to hook things up.”

Behind the all-Fortec second row, can be found an all-Carlin third row with Logan Sargeant beating championship leader Jamie Caroline to fifth on the grid by just 0.009s.

“I’m feeling pretty relaxed,” said Caroline. “We can afford to start sixth given where we are in the championship. I’ll be sending it around the outside in the race to climb up the order!

“Our tyres went off towards the end and I struggled for front end grip whereas others got quicker.

“I know my race pace is strong and our best is yet to come this weekend. We’ll be up there fighting for the top spots.”

Karl Massaad was Double R’s highest qualifier in seventh, with Friday pacesetter Linus Lundqvist only capable of 15th after making contact with the wall in the pit lane.

Johnathan Hoggard ensured all Fortec Motorsports-prepared cars qualified inside the top 10 ahead of Patrik Pasma and Olli Caldwell.

Sargeant in command at Rockingham with maiden British F4 win

27 AUGUST, 2017 – Rockingham’s bumper BTCC crowd were left saluting the Sargeant, as the Carlin racer took a commanding lights-to-flag maiden victory in the live-televised 24th round of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

Having played a starring role throughout the season, the American claimed a popular and well-deserved win from pole position.

He nailed the start, immediately putting daylight between himself and the field. From then on the Infinity Sports Management-backed rising star controlled the race expertly. He was calm, composed and incredibly quick.

“That was so much fun,” said an ecstatic Sargeant. “First of all I want to say a massive thank you to Carlin. They’ve done an amazing job with this car. I also want to say a big thanks to Infinity Sports Management who have helped me massively this season with my driving.

“It felt like the longest race of my life, leading from lights to flag! I was really consistent and was able to take it easy at times, not pushing too hard and not making mistakes. I could build up a gap throughout the race and was able to maintain the lead comfortably.

“I got the best starts I have all season in both of today’s races and that makes life easier too.

“We saved our newest tyres for this race because we knew we were on pole so it was our best chance of winning. That was the target and that’s what we achieved.

“We’ve been chipping away in the championship and this weekend has seen us take another big points haul. It’s not going to be easy, but if we can get some more wins who knows how high we might end up? There’s still everything to fight for.”

Front-row starter Ayrton Simmons found himself immediately under attack from the fast-starting Linus Lundqvist and Oliver York. The latter making it past coming into turn two while Jamie Caroline dived around the outside of all three drivers at Deene, emerging in third behind York.

With pace in hand and having recorded the fastest lap of the race on the third tour of the 1.94-mile Speedway, Caroline backed Lundqvist into Simmons to give the Swede plenty to think about.

Simmons duly obliged and as he squabbled with Lundqvist, ultimately coming out on top after firing up the inside of the Double R racer at Tarzan to take fourth on lap nine, Caroline was able to break away. The Carlin driver followed in York’s wheel tracks to bring home a valuable haul of points for his championship bid.

“We’ve shown our pace this weekend with two second place finishes,” commented York. “Overall it’s been a good weekend. After qualifying P2 we’ve just progressed from there.

“I managed to get past Ayrton at the start which was important because he is a hard driver to overtake and then I was able to get my head down from there.

“We had the pace to challenge for the win in that race, but we struggled a little bit on the older tyres.

“The kind of form we’re now showing is really good and proves we can be a real force in this championship.

“I’ve been working with a new engineer Mick Kouros for the last few rounds and we’re gelling really well. This is translating into the strong results we’ve got this weekend. Mick knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s made some improvements to the car since Knockhill so these podiums are a nice reward for him and the team.”

“Our starts have been pretty good this weekend,” said Caroline.  “We haven’t lost a place off the line.

“Overall it’s been a good weekend points wise. It means I can relax a little bit more with a 74.5 point lead heading to Silverstone.

“If we can have a clean Silverstone weekend with three podiums then we could be looking at wrapping up the title then.

“I knew pace wise I would be quicker than Lundqvist based on the long runs from Friday, so I knew if I backed Lundqvist into Simmons that would cause them to have a squabble and then I could break away. I’m pleased to get fastest lap too.

“I didn’t really want to risk a decent points’ finish trying to overtake York. It’s been a good weekend’s work.”

Behind the top five the battle for Ford F4 Challenge Cup honours raged between TRS Arden’s Olli Caldwell and Fortec Motorsports’ Hampus Ericsson; the two drivers making up several places early on from 10th and eighth on the grid.

As well as battling with Ericsson, Caldwell was having to contend with a technical glitch and a window of opportunity finally arose for Ericsson on lap nine coming out of Deene hairpin. The Swede grasped it with both hands. Meanwhile Caldwell’s race came to a premature end soon after as he was forced to retire the car due to the technical problem.

“It was a tough fight with Caldwell in the first part of the race for sixth and the Challenge Cup lead,” said hat-trick hero Ericsson. “I was really pleased to come out on top.

“I pulled off the move coming out of Deene hairpin. Caldwell got wheel spin coming out of the hairpin and we ran side by side into turn three. I then got the sling shot past him on the inside of turn four.

“We’ve found a really good rhythm at the moment and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve at Silverstone.”

Piastri’s miserable weekend continued, with his TRS Arden-prepared racer pointing the wrong way on the exit of Deene on the opening lap and an early retirement soon following.

His team-mates Simmons and Alex Quinn enjoyed an eventful second lap, with the latter running onto the grass having overtaken Simmons late on during the opening lap. It sent Quinn down the order from fifth to ninth, but he would climb his way back up to seventh ahead of Manuel Sulaiman. The JHR Developments driver returned to the points for the first time since the Snetterton meeting in July, having made up four places during the race.

Sam Smelt and GW Motorsport starred in the points once again in ninth, while Patrik Pasma completed the top 10 ahead of Jamie Sharp and Lucas Alecco Roy. The duo were locked in an entertaining battle for the final part of proceedings, just in front of Lucca Allen (Falcon Motorsport) who recorded his best finish in the Ford F4 Challenge Cup with second.

After another scintillating weekend of Ford EcoBoost-powered action, attention now turns to the upcoming meeting at Silverstone on 16/17 September where Caroline will have the chance to be crowned FIA British Formula 4 Champion.

Ford EcoBoost-powered win number four for Lundqvist

26 AUGUST, 2017 – Linus Lundqvist withstood pressure from a fast-starting Oliver York to take a commanding win from pole position in Round 22 of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

York sniffed his second victory of the season in the opening exchanges through turns one and two, at one point just nudging in front of Lundqvist. However, the Swede was wise to his advances and kept York pinned to the outside to prevent him from scything past.

The Double R ace then set about pulling a gap and controlled the pace out front on the way to his fourth win of the campaign, with York 1.895 seconds behind.

“It’s brilliant to be able to add to my tally of wins for the season,” said Lundqvist. “I was so happy after qualifying on pole and now I’m on a whole other level!

“It was a bit tough at the start, defending the lead from the guys behind, but I held on and pulled a gap.

“Then it was all about managing the tyres which was made harder by being chased by York. So I had to manage the tyres while trying to maintain the gap which is not easy.

“I’m hugely excited to see what we can achieve tomorrow. I’m so happy with how the car is handling. The team have done an incredible job. It’s always so exciting to get behind the wheel of the British F4 car. Let’s see if we can get another win this weekend.”

“We were very evenly matched at the front,” added York. “Linus got a gap in the first part of the race. I managed to get alongside and just slightly in front of him through the first and second corners, but was on the outside so couldn’t quite make the move stick.

“Second is a good result. It’s good points for the championship and we can build on this.

“Even though I got my first win a fortnight ago we’ve been struggling a bit so it’s good to qualify well and carry that through into the race, battling at the front and showing we have the pace to win. Hopefully we can bag plenty more points tomorrow.”

Another fast starter was Jamie Caroline with lightning reactions off the line from fifth on the grid. The championship leader ran three abreast with Carlin team-mate Logan Sargeant and TRS Arden’s Ayrton Simmons on the run into Deene, running around the outside of the pair to emerge in third place.

Struggling with worn tyres, Caroline was unable to escape Sargeant’s clutches and in the closing stages his mirrors were full of Sargeant’s Ford EcoBoost-powered racer.

Caroline’s saving grace was a better run out of Brooke Chicane lap after lap. It was just enough to prevent Sargeant from getting sufficient slipstream down the straight and around the turn one banking to set up a move into Deene.

“We were fortunate in that race that Piastri was unable to finish and that I was able to hold on to third,” explained Caroline.

“We were on our most used tyres in that race which showed with the kind of lap times we were achieving, as well as the fact I was drifting through quite a few corners!

“It’s not a bad result at all as far as the championship is concerned with another good points haul.

“If we can get a podium in all three races this weekend that would be brilliant and then go into Silverstone with the chance of taking the title there.

“I initially pulled a gap to Logan and was catching York, but I just knew I didn’t have it in the tyres to mount a proper attack so I backed off, but then the tyres dropped off further and Logan was able to reel me in.

“I was kind of surprised I was able to pull away from Logan coming out of the last corner and onto the banking because I was struggling for traction due to the life left in the tyres. On one lap I even rubbed along the wall and I have no idea how the car stayed intact. Ford and Mygale clearly know how to build a strong car!”

As Caroline and Sargeant squabbled, the TRS Arden duo of Ayrton Simmons and Alex Quinn looked to pick up the pieces, but ran out of laps and had to settle for fifth and sixth; ahead of Patrik Pasma whose seventh place earns him pole for the reverse-grid race.

Caroline’s third could prove all the more decisive when taking into consideration the fate of Oscar Piastri in the race. His chief title rival suffered front wing damage early on and then encountered a technical problem which left him dropping down the order despite an impressive rear-guard action which saw him initially keep a gaggle of six cars behind him.

The Aussie ultimately had to retire on lap six after coming into the pits. His first non-finish of the season after a remarkable run of 21 consecutive races in the points.

Jamie Sharp was in fine form for Sharp Motorsport, showing no signs of the balance issues that hampered him on Friday to climb more places than any other driver from 13th to eighth. The Rochdale racer pulled off some perfectly-judged moves, notably a bold dive up the inside of Karl Massaad at Tarzan.

The latter finished ahead of Fortec Motorsports’ Hampus Ericsson who is making a habit of taking Ford F4 Challenge Cup victories, and did so again with his fourth Class win of the campaign with Olli Caldwell (TRS Arden) and Lucca Allen (Falcon Motorsport) completing the podium.

Caldwell found himself facing an uphill battle from lap two after a tangle at Tarzan saw him spun around. The talented teenager was unperturbed though and climbed up to 12th, behind Sam Smelt (GW Motorsport) after entertaining battles with Allen and Carlin’s Lucas Alecco Roy.

Ford’s young stars are back on track at Rockingham at 1005 tomorrow for the reverse-grid race with the Rockingham finale, in which Sargeant will go from the pole, to be televised live on ITV4 at 1512.

Lundqvist and Sargeant share the qualifying honours at Rockingham

  • Ultra-competitive qualifying sees top four covered by less than a tenth of a second.

26 AUGUST, 2017 – Double R Racing’s Linus Lundqvist came out on top in a closely fought battle for pole position at Rockingham Motor Speedway in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

A host of drivers looked capable of taking top spot, with seven drivers all recording times within three tenths of the pole time around the 1.94-mile circuit.

Lundqvist’s flyer with several minutes of the session remianing proved too good for his rivals. A 1m 18.787s lap deposing provisional pole sitter Oliver York who had edged ahead of longstanding P1 man Logan Sargeant.

“To be honest, I wasn’t that confident coming into this weekend as I wasn’t sure it would be our strongest track,” said Lundqvist.

“We did a lot of work yesterday and put together a good setup. We made few little mistakes in that session, but pulled out a good lap when it mattered.

“The conditions changed throughout the session. There was a bit of moisture in the air which made it interesting, but maybe that worked in our favour.

“We’ve had a lot of bad luck this season, but hopefully this is a sign that it’s turning around and we can excel in the final three meetings.”

“I’m definitely happy with that qualifying performance,” said York. “It was a tough session and you can see that just by looking at how the close the times are. P2 is a great result.

“I know this circuit pretty well and have done quite a few laps around here so I was pretty confident going into qualifying.

“We weren’t as quick yesterday so we changed some things overnight. They were only small tweaks, but they have definitely helped us take a step forward.”

As had been the case yesterday, Sargeant was able to marry speed with consistency and in doing so recorded the best second-fastest lap of anybody to claim pole for the final race of the weekend which will take place tomorrow.

Starting alongside him for both Round 22 and 24 will be TRS Arden’s Ayrton Simmons. Meanwhile title rivals Jamie Caroline and Oscar Piastri will start from the third row in what is undoubtedly a tantalising prospect.

Friday pacesetter Alex Quinn had to settle for seventh, unable to match the times he recorded in testing, yet still only 0.222s off the pole.

Patrik Pasma will line up eighth ahead of fastest Ford F4 Challenge Cup runner Hampus Ericsson and Double R’s Karl Massaad.

The secret life of… Oliver York

18 AUGUST, 2017 – A British and world kart champion, and an undisputed rising star backed by the MSA Academy and Andy Priaulx Sports Management. This 16-year-old from Woking has probably completed more laps on the simulator at iZone than Sabine Schmitz has of the Nürburgring. We hear from the newest addition to the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost winners’ club and the Fortec Motorsports racer who goes by the name of the chocolate bar that’s not for girls, Oliver York.

Apart from driving a British F4 car, what is your favourite buzz?
Playing and watching football. I’m a big Manchester United fan and my favourite player is Ryan Giggs.

Who is your favourite driver?
Ayrton Senna because he was so good under pressure and made very few mistakes.

What’s your favourite track?
On the British F4 calendar I would say Snetterton. My favourite that’s not on the calendar is Spa.

Define yourself as a driver in three words?
Attacking, brave and fair.

What should everyone try once in their lifetime?
Playing football. Preferably with Ryan Giggs!

What are you afraid of?
Spiders and snakes! I steer clear of the snake enclosure at the zoo.

What did your teachers say about you in your school report?
You would have to ask my Dad. I don’t look at my school report for fear of what the teachers might have said!

What is the worst purchase you have ever made?
A mini Segway. I’ve got one just sitting in the corner of my room and it will be on eBay very soon.

If you could own one Ford road car what would it be?
A Ford GT.

What’s your favourite film?
I cannot say my favourite because it’s an 18! Let’s play it safe and say Winnie the Pooh.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?
Teleportation. I would teleport everywhere so I could avoid the long drive to places like Anglesey Circuit for testing which is six hours away.

What’s the most important thing in life?
To have fun and make the most of the time you have.

 

Maiden British F4 win for Oliver York at Knockhill

13 AUGUST, 2017 – Oliver York took his maiden win in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost at Knockhill in Round 20 of the season and brought home Fortec Motorsports’ first win of the campaign. Carlin’s Logan Sargeant chased down York in second, while Hampus Ericsson provided fans with a thrilling display of defensive driving to hold on to the final podium place and claim another Ford F4 Challenge Cup victory for Fortec Motorsports.

Starting alongside poleman Ericsson, Andy Priaulx Sports Management star York wasted no time in finding a way past his team-mate. Despite make an excellent getaway, Ericsson was immediately under pressure after turn one. York didn’t need any invitation when the first overtaking opportunity presented itself, scything up the inside of Ericsson to take the lead.

It immediately put Ericsson into the clutches of Sargeant and as the two jostled for second, York set about trying to break away from the field.

Sargeant eventually made a move stick on lap nine after a Safety Car period and despite the American recording the fastest lap on the final tour of the 1.27-mile Fife track, York had enough in hand to masterfully take the first single-seater win of his career.

“It’s a big relief to get this first win,” said race winner York. “It’s been a long season and we’ve finally done it. I’ve worked so hard to achieve this.”

“My game plan was to get past Hampus early on and that’s exactly what I did. I saw Hampus get a bad run out of the chicane and I knew that was my chance to strike.

“From then on I tried to pull away. Hampus is good at defending so that helped me create a gap.

“It’s fantastic for the team that Hampus got third and really pleasing to see that today we had the speed to win because yesterday that didn’t quite look to be the case.

“The team have done a great job. The car has improved all weekend and we’ve really honed the setup.“

“It was another good race for us, bringing home plenty of championship points with my rivals behind me,” commented Sargeant.

“It took me a little longer than I would have liked to pass Hampus which gave Oliver the chance to get away.

“The move on Hampus was tight, but fair. I sent it up his inside and he was mature enough to give me just enough room.

“We got fastest lap and we clearly had the speed out there, so next time hopefully we can go one better.

“It’s great to be consistently on the podium and now we need to take that final step to win. We’re pushing hard and we’ll get there.”

The excitement for Ericsson was from over after being passed by Sargeant. The Swede immediately had to contend with Alex Quinn, Ayrton Simmons and Jamie Caroline. The latter having been on the back foot after running wide and off the track on the exit of Taylor’s Hairpin on the opening lap which cost him several places.

Ericsson refused to buckle under the pressure, doggedly keeping Quinn at bay, with Caroline and Simmons looming to pick up the pieces while swapping positions repeatedly in the closing stages.

“It feels so good to be on the podium and get another Ford F4 Challenge Cup win. Oliver was so fast too so it’s a fantastic result for the team.

“I got a great start, but Oliver found a way through. Before the race we discussed with the team our plan for the race and we agreed not to fight each other hard to maximise the chances of a strong result for Fortec.

“I then had Sargeant attacking me which was tough. I did my best to keep him behind, but he was faster.

“Then I had to defend from the top guys in the championship with Quinn, Simmons and Caroline behind me. It was really intense, but a lot of fun. I worked so hard to get on the podium.”

Linus Lundqvist’s luckless weekend continued, despite yet another fine opening lap which saw him make up two places from eighth to get past title rivals Caroline and Oscar Piastri.

Contact with Piastri on the exit of Taylor’s Hairpin saw Lundqvist spin out of the race on lap six, Piastri suffer front wing damage and the deployment of the Safety Car.

The latter did well to nurse his car to the finish, being subject to an exhilarating two-pronged attack from Caroline and Richardson Racing’s Harry Webb who dived either side of the Aussie to climb up to sixth and seventh.

Lucca Allen was another casualty on lap six. Contact with JHR Developments’ Manuel Sulaiman resulting in a trip to the barrier for the Falcon Motorsport driver having been running in 14th, while Sulaiman just missed out on a point score later in the race finishing in 11th.

Patrik Pasma soared up through the order from 16th to finish in the points in 10th, behind Double R’s Karl Massaad.

Lights go out for the final race of the weekend this afternoon at 1540 which will be televised live on ITV4.

York targets top three in F4 British Championship

  • York switches from Ford F4 Challenge Cup to contest remainder of British F4 season.
  • Intensive training programme with APSM and iZone during summer break sees talented teenager brimming with confidence.

25 JULY, 2017 – Oliver York has been a standout performer in the Ford F4 Challenge Cup with seven wins and seven second place finishes in class, and this season’s leading rookie has big ambitions as he embarks upon the second half of the 2017 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost campaign. The Fortec Motorsports racer will switch from the Challenge Cup and focus his efforts on the overall championship in a bid to climb up the table from seventh and consistently fight at the front for race wins.

Although his Challenge Cup success has put him at the top of the class standings by a margin of 40 points, York’s motivation for turning his attention solely to the overall championship is clear: “Top three in the championship is my aim,” said York. “That’s what I’m working towards in the second half of the season.

“I believe I can achieve that and that’s why I have chosen to switch from the Challenge Cup to compete in all the remaining races this season. At the beginning of the year everyone aims to be in the top three and at the front. If you can take the title it’s a bonus.”

Andy Priaulx Sports Management (APSM) and iZone Driver Performance have been honing York’s skills behind the wheel during the summer break in an effort to help him fulfil his ambitions and prepare for a frenetic two months which will see the 16-year-old contest 16 races.

“The team at APSM and iZone have been working with me so I can hit the ground running. Both in terms of fitness and track knowledge. I’ve spent a lot of time in the simulator and focused on learning the remaining circuits on the calendar.

“APSM and iZone believe in me. We all want to get that first British F4 win under our belts. We’ve already achieved a lot, including podiums and a pole position, but my first race win is the next big target. It’s the only thing that’s missing.”

Further support has come from his those around him in the Fortec Motorsports team. Namely guidance from his engineer Dan Mitchell, team owner Richard Dutton and team manager Ollie Dutton who have created an environment in which York believes both he and his team-mates can excel.

“At Fortec we always want to achieve top results, but the team also tries to create an enjoyable atmosphere to help take the pressure off,” said York. “There are other things beyond just the racing. They understand that and create a relaxed environment for drivers which really helps while everyone works towards the same goal. We want to win, but we want to have fun while doing it.

“Oulton Park didn’t go to plan because we didn’t do any testing beforehand and I missed half of the first practice session because of a school exam,” explained York, reflecting on the ups and downs in his maiden Ford EcoBoost-powered season. “At Croft we were really fast in the dry, but then it rained in qualifying which threw us a bit.

“My pole position at Thruxton is my biggest achievement so far. The second place at Donington Park was also pretty special. I could have perhaps won that race. Jamie Caroline and I were trading fastest lap times. We ended up being about 15 seconds ahead of everyone else. We were so fast.”

York also has plenty of admiration for the F4 British Championship which is enabling him to build an excellent platform from which to progress up the FIA single-seater pyramid: “The racing in British F4 is one of the best things about the series. It’s so close. Everyone is out there for one thing and one thing only. To win. It’s what makes it so exciting and so special. You feel like you really have to earn your success.

“The championship is run incredibly well. We get a lot of track time and three 20 minute races every weekend on the TOCA package as the sole single-seater support series to the British Touring Car Championship. It means we get so much exposure with lots of fans and television coverage.”

York returns to action in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost this weekend (28-30 July) at Snetterton. Many will be keen to see if his hard work over the summer has paid off as he bids to finally stand on the top step of the podium in the UK’s leading junior single-seater series.

British F4 history makers head to Oulton Park

18 MAY, 2017 – Having thrilled fans a fortnight ago with some of the most memorable races in the championship’s recent history, featuring frenetic battles for position throughout the field, Formula 1’s stars of tomorrow are back! They are set to provide a spectacle to savour as the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost takes to the track at Cheshire’s picturesque Oulton Park this weekend (20/21 May).

Carlin’s Jamie Caroline is in the ascendancy. At Thruxton the championship leader became the first driver to win all three British F4 races in one meeting, taking his victory tally to seven for the season. Caroline’s success has been all the more remarkable given that he has had to produce performances from the very top-drawer, with some of the world’s most talented junior single-seater racers pushing him to the limit.

TRS Arden’s Oscar Piastri sits second in the standings having visited the podium more than any driver with the exception of Caroline, while team-mate Ayrton Simmons is one of only three drivers to win a race this season. The other having been clinched by Double R’s Linus Lundqvist who broke the lap record at Thruxton. All have consistently shown front-running pace going toe-to-toe with Caroline and they will seek to make inroads on his advantage at the top of the table.

Oliver York (Fortec Motorsports) has emerged as a leading player, heading the Ford F4 Challenge Cup standings and battling for overall race victory after claiming a maiden pole at Thruxton. It came following countless hours of hard work with Richard Dutton’s team and Andy Priaulx Sports Management. With qualifying seemingly mastered, the international kart champion will have turned his attention to race pace ahead of his trip to Cheshire.

Another driver on the up is Logan Sargeant (Carlin). Thruxton was his strongest weekend to date. The highlight being his first podium in the series. The American shone during pre-season, setting the pace in the test at Oulton Park at the beginning of February.

His team-mate Patrik Pasma is a mere two points behind him in the standings with a brace of podiums to his name. Karl Massaad (Double R) starred on the rostrum for the first time at Thruxton, bringing home his biggest haul of points of the campaign so far. Alex Quinn (TRS Arden) joined him with second in the same race and like Massaad the 2016 Rookie Champion is gunning for wins this weekend.

Jamie Sharp (Sharp Motorsport) and Harry Webb (Richardson Racing) were inseparable on track last time out, providing an exhilarating battle which saw Daniel Cao (Double R) also get in on the act. Sharp will intend to make home advantage count, with the Rochdale racer just an hour up the road from the circuit. Jacky Liu (GW Motorsport) is looking to record his first point score of the campaign; meanwhile Lucas Alecco Roy (Carlin) aims to return to the top 10 after a fruitless weekend at Thruxton.

There are two official test sessions at Oulton Park scheduled for Friday, with qualifying and two races on Saturday followed by a Sunday afternoon BTCC-supporting finale which will be televised live on ITV4.
