29 AUGUST, 2016 – Alex Quinn cemented his lead in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford Rookie Class competition with a hat trick of class victories at Rockingham Motor Speedway, taking his 2016 tally to 15 wins. Fortec Motorsports team mate Nicolai Kjaergaard stormed to second place in the 2016 Rookie class standings after an impressive event, with Jamie Caroline producing some of the most outstanding overtaking of the weekend.

The Fortec Motorsports squad commenced its British F4 Rockingham attack with Quinn rounding out the top ten in the combined classification for Friday’s practice sessions. Jamie Caroline, in the #38 Fortec Motorsport Mygale-Ford, set the twelfth fastest time, with team-mates rookie Nicolai Kjaergaard and Frank Bird in fourteenth and fifteenth respectively.

Saturday brought changeable conditions and a drying track for qualifying, but the Fortec squad pulled it together once again to make the best of the tyres and track time. Quinn was the fastest rookie and Fortec driver ending the session in P3, however, with second fastest driver Devlin DeFrancesco carried a 10 place grid penalty from the Knockhill event, therefore Quinn was promoted to the front row of the grid for the start of race one (round 22). Kjaergaard was ninth, followed by Bird in P10 and Caroline in a surprisingly disappointing eighteenth.

The afternoon brought a thrilling round 22 for the spectators at Rockingham and as the rain fell Quinn flew off the line ensuring that he was side by side with pole sitter James Pull going into the first corner. Pull emerged from Deene hairpin in the lead, but 15 year-old Quinn continued to match the pace of the Carlin racer up until the half way stage when only then did Pull edge a gap to take the victory in the increasingly slippery conditions. Quinn took the chequered flag not only achieving a further second placed championship podium and fastest Rookie lap, but also his 13th Rookie class win of 2016.

After a below par qualifying, British F4 appointed rainmaster, Jamie Caroline, ended the day as the standout driver by a country mile.  A storming start from the back of the grid saw him fly through the field in the drag around the banking on the run down to Deene hairpin, boldly hanging on around the outside to pass several cars to conclude his opening lap an astonishing ten places higher. The Pirtek Racing star continued to shine when he passed another four cars on his way to fourth position, pulling off the move of the race going cleanly around the outside of Sennan Fielding (JHR) at Tarzan.

Nicolai Kjaergaard came home in eighth place overall, and as the second Rookie, earning him points to boost him in to the runner up position of the 2016 Rookie class cup and awarding him pole position for the start of round 23. Frank Bird drove a solid race to cross the finish line in P14.

With a reverse grid for the start of round 23 it was Kjaergaard who lined up in pole position for #TeamFortec, with Caroline on the third row in P5, Quinn directly behind him in P7 and Bird in P13.

When the lights went out the leading four drivers all dived into the first corner, with Rafael Martins (Arden) and Kjaergaard making contact. Luckily both stayed pointing in the right direction as the Ford EcoBoost stampede sped around the Rockingham Motor Speedway banking. Kjaergaard bravely held on to own to take the chequered flag as third rookie in P11 overall.

Caroline profited from the drama at the start to finding himself soon running up in third, only to lose out on position at a safety car restart after the recovery of Matthiesen’s JTR car at Yentwood corner. He then found himself under attack from team-mate Quinn, but as the race progressed was able to gradually break clear and complete the contest in P4.

In the closing laps Quinn fell into the clutches of James Pull who pulled off a late braking move on the Racing Steps Foundation backed rookie to claim fifth. However, Pull was later excluded from the race for overtaking under safety car boards and flags, leaving Quinn to claim P5 in addition to his 14th Rookie Class win. An electrical issue caused Bird’s premature retirement from the race on lap eight.

The 20 minutes long weekend finale on Sunday saw Quinn complete a hat trick of Rookie class victories by achieving a fifth placed finish overall. Caroline, who started round 24 in P18 after his disappointing qualifying session, took the chequered flag in P14 with his Danish team mate Kjaergaard finishing in P18 whilst achieving a third place trophy in the Rookie class. Bird, who had started the race from the sixth row of the grid in P11 crossed the finish line to conclude the Rockingham weekend in P17.

“The weekend was frustrating. After a disappointing Friday we really left ourselves with a lot of hard work to do over night. The work paid off and we saw a very different Saturday. Qualifying was much better; Frank was P11 in the end but the session saw him fighting for pole at one stage! Nicolai did a great job to find his Snetterton form and be in the top eight. Quinn on the front row was a brilliant job.
“We would have liked better results from Sunday’s races; we didn’t quite race hard enough to enable more podiums, but the boys are still learning. Silverstone is next and after a good couple of tests we are really looking forward to this one.”

TEAM NEWS: Fortec Motorsports’ Alex Quinn extends lead in F4 British Championship Rookie Class

16 AUGUST, 2016 – Racing Steps Foundation backed Alex Quinn extended his lead in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford Rookie Class competition with a hat trick of class victories and two overall race wins at Knockhill circuit, Fife. Fortec Motorsports team-mate Nicolai Kjaergaard also secured two rookie class podiums to close the gap to second place in the 2016 class standings during what proved to be a dramatic weekend for the series.

Quinn wasted no time in acclimatising to the 1.27-mile Scottish circuit and shone when conditions were at their best to set the day’s quickest practice time on Friday. Fortec Motorsports drivers Jamie Caroline (supported by Pirtek Racing), Danish rookie Nicolai Kjaergaard and Ginetta Junior’s graduate Frank Bird set the 12th, 14th and 15th fastest combined practice times respectively.

There was a change in pace on Saturday morning when a bold decision taken by the Daventry based squad, led by team manager Dan Mitchell, meant that all four Fortec drivers were able to impress by the end of qualifying. With a dry line beginning to emerge after a sudden downpour at the start of the session, the team elected to fit the quartet with slick tyres with just minutes on the clock remaining. With only Petru Florescu (Carlin) also on the dry weather tyre, the battle for pole rapidly became about who could get their slicks up to temperature before the chequered flag.

Florescu stole pole position in the closing seconds, but overall it was front of grid domination for Fortec Motorsports. Quinn was second quickest and netted pole for the final race of the weekend, Kjaergaard was fourth followed by Bird in a superb P5, his best qualifying finish of the season, and Caroline, who had twice posted times good enough for provisional pole only to have them removed for track limits and a five place grid penalty carried over from Snetterton a fortnight ago, on row four in P8.

Quinn drove an impeccable first race in the afternoon, chasing Florescu from lights to flag to make a welcome return to the podium and clinch the Rookie win along with the fastest class lap. Kjaergaard defended well for much of the race and kept his nose clean when the more experienced title contenders fought their way through the field. Caroline made up several positions in a solid drive to cross the line in fifth with Kjaergaard in P11.

With a reverse grid for the start of Round 20 on Sunday morning Caroline lined up in P2, Quinn in P7, Kjaergaard P11 and Bird in P13. During the 17 lap contest Caroline received a 10 second time penalty for making a false start, but maintained concentration to defend fiercely against Devlin DeFrancesco and Florescu as they set upon his #38 Fortec Motorsport Mygale-Ford. The Carlin pair’s fortunes took a downturn at Taylor’s Hairpin when they made contact together and slid into the tyre barriers. Following the incident, the officials chose to exclude Florescu from the meeting due to a trackside altercation, whilst DeFrancesco and Caroline were handed ten place grid penalties to be taken when possible to do so.

Quinn found himself in the middle of the leading pack action, but despite just missing out on a main podium at the end of the eventful race, claimed his 11th Rookie class win of the year. Bird closed out the top 10 with Kjaergaard following in P11 and taking the third place Rookie trophy.

In true British F4 fashion, the weekend finale was not short of drama either. Quinn made an impressive start from pole position for his Fortec team only to suffer a lack of straight line pace which was to endure until the chequered flag. Despite this handicap, he completed a hat trick of Rookie class victories and fastest laps by achieving a third place podium finish to conclude Sunday afternoon.

Jamie Caroline, who started Round 21 in P12 and DeFrancesco resumed their earlier battle, this time for eighth position. Caroline came up trumps at the chequered flag with his Danish team mate Kjaergaard rounding out the top ten and closing the gap to second place in the Rookie class to just five points with a second place trophy. For the majority of his race Bird was locked in close combat with Ayrton Simmons (TRS Arden) and took the chequered flag in P14.

With the time sheet for round 19 amended by the stewards after Florescu’s exclusion from the meeting, Quinn was awarded the overall race one win, with Caroline promoted to fourth and Kjaergaard earning a point for P10.

“Firstly, I’d like to say a big thanks to all my guys; Saturday morning qualifying was a complete team effort to get all four drivers in to the top six. Alex took advantage of his high qualifying position which eventually saw us pick up our first win since Donington, which is a great feeling.

“Frank, Nic and Jamie struggled for pace in race one, which gradually got better in race three, but we’ve got to work much harder to convert these higher positions in to valuable points. Pole in race three proved difficult to convert as a failing wire loom caused Alex to lose a significant amount of straight line speed, which got progressively worse through out the race. But he drove superbly through the corners to nurse a sick car home into third place.”

Zane Goddard blitzes British F4 field for Knockhill win

KNOCKHILL 14 AUGUST, 2016 – Zane Goddard claimed an emphatic win in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford feature race at Knockhill. He led home compatriot Luis Leeds and Racing Steps Foundation backed Alex Quinn.

Goddard had been exceptional off the line in the preceding British F4 races this weekend and it was the same story for Round 21 of the Championship, as he flew past Leeds for second place into turn one.

The Australian then set about Quinn who led from pole. The breakthrough came sooner than he perhaps imagined. Quinn locked up on tyres that weren’t quite up to optimal temperature into Taylor’s Hairpin and Goddard needed no encouragement to scythe his way up the inside.

His Double R-prepared race car looked like it was on rails around the 1.27 mile Fife track; the team clearly having set the car up perfectly. Goddard maximised the Ford EcoBoost-powered machinery at his disposal and was simply untouchable, unsurprisingly recording fastest lap on the way to his second British F4 victory.

Said Goddard: “I was super consistent. It felt perfect. The whole race played out perfectly. It couldn’t have been any better. I’m really happy. Huge thanks to the team and the fans. They’ve been great and cheering me on as I crossed the line.

“The car was so good it was hard to actually do anything wrong in it. The car was hooked up and fantastic.

“The starts have been so good lately. We keep nailing them and hopefully we can keep this up in the future.”

“Knockhill is a track where there isn’t too much braking which means you’re pushing the car quite hard most of the time and to the limit which is tricky to do, but it’s rewarding when it works out.

Despite losing out to Goddard at the start there was no let-up from Leeds who focused on getting past Quinn and he did so with arguably the overtake of the weekend.

The Red Bull Junior ducking to the outside of Quinn into Taylor’s Hairpin forcing him to cover and then making a split-second switch down the Fortec racer’s inside under braking without locking up. A beautiful move, showcasing extremely fair and respectful driving from both drivers who exhibited true class.

Explained Leeds: “We had a lot of pace. This weekend started off pretty average in qualifying when we were unfortunate not to be on slicks at the right time, but we didn’t lose our focus.

“We got pole for race two and turned things around from there. We’re pretty close to leading the championship now and we must keep moving forward.

“This morning I was 48 points off the lead and now I’m only five away which is the beauty of this sport.

Speaking about his epic overtaking manoeuvre: “I learnt that move from Daniel Ricciardo when he did something very similar to Vettel at Monza when they were team-mates and I really hope he gets to watch my move today.

“I saw Alex make a mistake and I was originally going to go around the outside, but I thought I would make it look cool and switch to going down the inside. It looks pretty cool on camera I think.”

Quinn was solid in third and rounded out a strong weekend with yet another Rookie class victory. His 12th of the campaign.

Said Quinn: “I lost the lead to Zane on the opening lap and I think that was just down to tyre temperature which we have been struggling with all weekend, but I’m still really happy with this. A win (following’s Florescu’s exclusion from the meeting) and a podium is not a bad thing to be coming out of the weekend with.

A cracking battle for fourth emerged as the race progressed as JHR’s Sennan Fielding found himself fending off Max Fewtrell, Rafael Martins and James Pull. The latter having already pulled off superb move to overtake Kjaergaard.

Commented Fielding: “We made quite a drastic change to the car before the race which didn’t seem to work so I did well to get fourth. I’ve not felt too well in myself all weekend so I think this is one of those weekends you just have to brush under the carpet.

“We could have capitalised more on what happened this weekend [to other title rivals]. We had good pace in the car, but I know we have good pace in the car for Rockingham too and we were quick there last year. We’ve made a lot of improvements since then and I know we can do a really good job.”

Meanwhile Caroline and DeFrancesco resumed battle after the day’s earlier race as they jostled for eighth in entertaining fashion.

Kjaergaard rounded out the top ten claiming a well-deserved point and closing the gap to Jack Martin for second in the Rookie class, with Martin crossing the line less than three tenths behind the Dane.

Said Kjaergaard: “It’s been a tough weekend really. We’ve struggled with the setup of the car and I haven’t managed to adapt to this track as well as I would have hoped. I still managed to keep some of the rookies’ behind me though which has given me good points for the rookie championship.”

Ayrton Simmons and Frank Bird also showcased their wheel to wheel prowess with an enthralling battle for much of the race, whilst Monger was unfortunate to spin having been as high as sixth.

TEAM NEWS: Hat Trick of Class wins for Nicolai Kjaergaard in British F4 at Snetterton

2 AUGUST, 2016 – Fortec Motorsports Danish driver Nicolai Kjaergaard not only celebrated his 17th birthday, but also a hat trick of trophies from his sensational Scholarship Class wins in each of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford rounds at Snetterton circuit last weekend, where the series returned for the second half of the 2016 season after a six-week summer break.

Kjaergaard immediately displayed his ever improving race craft when the series took to the Norfolk track for the first time on Friday. He narrowly missed out on a top ten position in the second free practice session and continued to show his mettle on a damp and greasy circuit on Saturday morning when he posted the eighth quickest lap time as the fastest rookie and Fortec driver. The Dane kept his head during an incident filed race one in the afternoon to not only set the fastest lap in class, but take the chequered flag in P6 to collect the top Scholarship Class accolade.

Round 17 of the F4 British Championship was actioned pack from lights-out, with plenty of overtaking in a rapidly evolving race. Kjaergaard’s excellent weekend continued with a fourth place finish, his best single-seater performance to date, and another Rookie class win for his Fortec Motorsports team. Starting from P9 on the grid for race three (with positions determined by the second fastest lap times taken from the qualifying session), Kjaergaard once again drove an impeccable race; he made up three positions and achieved his third class-winning trophy to conclude a stand-out weekend for the birthday boy!

Team-mate Alex Quinn was the quickest Fortec driver and top rookie in FP2 on Friday, however, the tricky track conditions the following morning caught out the usually consistent Quinn in qualifying along with a few of his rivals. From the back of the grid for the start of race one Quinn put in a valiant drive to cross the finish line ten places higher in P9. He mustered another assured performance to take the chequered flag in sixth place at the end of race two and came home in P15 from the back of the grid in the weekend finale whilst setting the fastest rookie lap of the race.

It was a weekend that team-mate Jamie Caroline will want to forget, however, with two DNFs in rounds 16 and 18. Nevertheless a strong outing in race two on Saturday afternoon saw him climb through the field from P19 to take the chequered flag in a respectable seventh.

Ginetta Junior’s graduate and single-seater rookie Frank Bird once again produced a solid weekend in the #5 Fortec Motorsports Mygale-Ford. His trio of races produced two thirteenth placed finishes and a P10 in race two, rounding off all four Fortec challengers finishing inside the points to conclude a strong round for the Daventry based team.

“I think going away over the summer has helped me. I have new found confidence in the car to lean on the tyres in the corners and I can just go for it now. I’m really happy; I tried to get a good start off the line for all three races and I gained three positions in the final round, so it was a good race. I have had consistency in my races without many mistakes and I hope to carry on this good form at Knockhill and get an overall podium soon.”

Fantastic Fielding unstoppable at Snetterton in F4 British Championship

SNETTERTON 31 JULY, 2016 – Following his flawless qualifying performance and lights to flag victory yesterday, many touted Sennan Fielding for the win once more. The JHR Developments driver didn’t disappoint from pole.

The Amigos backed star has been in the ascendancy all weekend and victory in Round 18 of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered Ford capped off a stellar 48 hours for the driver.

Said the weekend’s double race winner: “I had a great first lap and I was hoping to build a good lead, but when the gap got under a second the tow was big down the straights. I worked out where DeFrancesco was quicker and where I was quicker and used that to my advantage.

“It was a great race and it’s been a great weekend for us. The team have done a fantastic job and thank you to everyone who has been here this weekend. All the marshals and everyone who has given their spare time to make it possible for us to go racing. A massive thanks to everyone at JHR and Amigos.”

Carlin’s Devlin DeFrancesco and Fewtrell were in close pursuit of Fielding throughout with TRS Arden’s Red Bull Junior star Luis Leeds getting in on the act too, lapping quicker than anyone else for a large part of the race in fourth.

Explained Leeds: “We had a lot of good pace. I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me for the rest of this year to come out on top, but I’m looking forward to the last four race weekends and I will be working as hard as I can to win this championship.

“I don’t expect anything to come easy. It’s a great championship because all the drivers in it are so good. It’s what makes it tough, but it’s also what makes it one of the best championships in the world.”

DeFrancesco did well to leap past team-mate Fewtrell at the start, his second place making him the only driver to finish on the podium in all three races this weekend.

Commented DeFrancesco: “We had a good pace in the race, just not in the right places. We were all over Sennan in sector two in the tight and twisty bits, but there were a few other places where he was a bit better than me.

“I’m really looking forward to the rest of the year though. I think we did the maximum we could this weekend even though we didn’t get the win. I have made a massive gain in the championship.”

It was also a welcome return to the podium for Fewtrell, who endured a difficult Saturday, but bounced back brilliantly ensuring that he is only four points off the championship lead.

Added Fewtrell: “I think this podium softens the blow following the first race. I didn’t get a great start so Devlin got me off the line and then we just stayed in formation. I think the pace was fine and I’m looking forward to Knockhill now to get some better results. There is still a long way to go.”

Fastest lap of the race was snatched away from Leeds by fifth place man Petru Florescu on the penultimate lap. Championship leader Florescu went into the race seeking a strong points finish to ensure he left Norfolk at the top of the standings and he duly delivered.

Said the Romanian: “It was a good race. I managed to gain three positions and do the fastest lap on old tyres. I’m really happy to leave this weekend back in the lead of the championship. I think if qualifying had gone better we could have fought for more wins.”

Nicolai Kjaergaard made it a clean sweep of Rookie Class wins courtesy of an assured drive to sixth for Fortec Motorsports. The Dane has been a revelation following the summer break and has sent a message that he’s force to be reckoned with for the remainder of the season.

“I’m really happy,” said Kjaergaard. “I tried to get a good start off the line and be consistent and we did that. I gained three positions so it was a good race. I am confident behind the wheel. I have had consistency in my races without many mistakes and that’s how I can keep my positions and also gain some. I hope to carry on this good form at Knockhill.”

Fellow Dane Patrik Matthiesen has also enjoyed the best weekend of his season so far, finally achieving his target of finishing the points in all three races. A top ten finish a just reward for a driver who has been tireless in efforts to improve his performance and work his way up the grid with JTR.

Said 24 Hours of Le Mans winner and JTR team owner Nick Tandy: “It’s the best weekend we’ve had all year so far in the championship and the pace in the race looked good. We didn’t qualify well, but Patrik was able to run with the pack in front which shows good progress.

“It’s nice to be scoring points and getting in the top ten. We don’t want to be hanging out at the back. As long as we see improvement and we are going in the right direction we can be positive. If we keep going in this direction we will be knocking on the door of podiums.”

Double R Racing’s Zane Goddard endured a far from ideal Saturday, but put in a battling drive to climb four places and finish seventh.

Stated Goddard: “It was an interesting race. The start was good. I managed to get past a few people, but I would have liked to have got a few more. Seventh is not too bad points wise, especially after yesterday. That’s a positive, but as a race driver you always want to be higher up.

“It’s a bit annoying qualifying went the way it did because it would have helped being further up the grid. At Knockhill I think we will be on the pace and hopefully we can get some top results like we did at Croft.”

TRS Arden’s rookie double act of Ayrton Simmons and Jack Martin put in strong performances to finish inside the top ten and fulfil the promising pace they had shown in testing on Friday.

Said Simmons: “We finished in the points and it’s been a good result after yesterday. I’m really happy with the team effort in recent weeks. I want to say thanks to Arden for giving me such a great car over the weekend and I’m sure we will be even stronger at Knockhill. If we can get a good qualifying there we can do really well and I’m pretty sure we will arrive with good pace in the car.”

Added Martin: “It’s good to be back on the Rookie podium. It’s nice to end on a high after a frustrating weekend and recover some points in the Rookie class standings. I had really good pace on Friday and I think what the team have done over the summer break has been really good.”

Team-mate Rafael Martins was extremely unlucky to finish just outside the points and will look to feature at the sharp end in two weeks’ time at Knockhill.

The same can be said of JHR’s Billy Monger and Jack Butel who had an entertaining battle for 12th after Monger unfortunately fell back through the order having taken evasive action to avoid a heavy braking Leeds and Pull. His lightning reactions coming in handy, but scant consolation for a driver who has had the pace to be fighting for the podium.

“We’ve been fast enough to be on the podium battle in every race, but things haven’t turned out great for us this weekend. Hopefully we can bounce back and show our true pace.

“My sponsors Metro deconstruction, Reigate Environmental Services, as well as Baylis and Harding and Barnado’s children’s charity which I’m an ambassador for have been brilliant in supporting me.”

Newcomers Marinescu (Richardson Racing) and Mohnhaupt (Falcon Motorsport) finished their weekends with further solid performances in their Ford EcoBoost-powered racers.

Said Marinescu: “Our lap times were even quicker today so that was good. I’m really positive I can do better in the next races. It’s been really fun and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Added Mohnhaupt: “It was a good race. We have improved a lot. I have learned so much with the help of the Falcon Motorsport team and I think Knockhill will be better. The highlight has been seeing my lap times get better and better.”

Flawless Fielding scores superb British F4 win at Snetterton

  • Fielding claims commanding third win of the season for JHR Developments.
  • Carlin achieves its 800th podium thanks to DeFrancesco and Pull.

SNETTERTON 3O JULY, 2016 – Sennan Fielding’s fine form at Snetterton this weekend continued in round 16 of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford; the JHR Developments star converting pole position to victory in style.

The race was far from short of drama. Caroline trying to make a move and unfortunately hitting the pit wall.

The safety car was called upon whilst Caroline’s stricken Pirtek Racing liveried Fortec was removed from the pit straight. Fielding wasted no time at the restart. The experienced driver left the field trailing in his wake as the safety car peeled into the pits.

However, Fielding’s breakaway was shortlived as the safety car almost immediately made another appearance following Fewtrell going off.

By the time the safety car returned to the pits once more there were only several laps remaining. Fielding was calm and composed out front however, keeping his Carlin pursuers Devlin DeFrancesco and James Pull at bay until the chequered flag.

Said the race winner: “It was a great restart. The second one was a little bit more difficult because the guys behind knew what I would likely do so I tried to mix it up a little bit. It was a fun race. It was good to get the first win of the weekend and we need to carry this on.

“I felt very comfortable out there. Credit to the team, they’ve made the car amazing so huge thanks to them. I think in the second half of the season we are really going to show what we can do and get our championship back on track.”

DeFrancesco and Pull’s podiums had added significance for Carlin as they secured its 800th podium since the team’s inception. A phenemonal achievement for a team that has been pivotal to careers of so many of motorsport’s leading lights, a number of whom having driven in British F4.

Commented DeFrancesco: “Sennan has been really quick all weekend. He’s really found his rhythm around here. We really struggled in FP1 and FP2 yesterday so we’ve made a great comeback as a team. We were cathching Sennan at some points of the race. There are some things we need to analyse for race two and three.

“It’s amazing to get 800 podiums for Carlin. They are such a great team and a major name in motorsport which makes me very proud to race from them.”

Added Pull: “It was a shame there were so many safety cars. I was just trying to pick up as many points as I could so third place is good. I cannot complain. 800 podiums for Carlin now so that’s a great milestone to achieve and hopefully we can do even better in the next races.”

Zane Goddard was a standout performer at the start, seizing the initiaitive jumping from tenth to sixth on the opening lap, and later working his way up to fourth for Double R Racing.

Nicolai Kjaergaard put in his best performance of the season to finish sixth for Fortec. The Dane has returned from the summer break reinvigorated and after a strong showing in qualifying took no prisioners on his way to a Rookie Class win.

Said Kjaergaard: “I think going away over the summer and coming back has helped me. I have confidence in the car to lean on the tyres in the corners and I can just go for it now. It will be difficult to catch Alex [Quinn] in the Rookie Class. He’s a really good driver, but I will do my best.”

Team-mate Alex Quinn had it all to do starting last after a frustrating qualifying and he put in a determined drive to finish ninth. The highlight of his race coming in the final two laps. He opportunistically snuck past Simmons as the TRS Arden racer tried to pass Matthiesen, and then proceeded to bravely pass Matthiesen on the outside of Riches who held off Simmons for tenth.

Stated Quinn: “It was a fun race. It was really good battling, but obviously I would prefer to be doing that at the front. I think it’s shown that we have really good place coming from 19th to ninth so I’m happy with this. Hopefully we can move up a bit more in the next race starting from a bit higher up. We will try to take as many opportunites as we can.”

Ahead of Quinn finsihed Petru Florescu and Rafael Martins in seventh and eighth respectively. The latter earning the reverse grid pole in the process and the former taking valubale points out of Fewtrell’s championship lead.

Newcomers Marinescu (Richardson Racing) and Mohnhaupt (Falcon Motorsport) rounded out the finishing classification, both drivers putting on an entertaining battle and seperated by just 4 tenths of a second as they crossed the line.

Lights go out on round 17 of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford at 1715 this afternoon. TRS Arden’s Rafael Martins will be hoping take full advantage of pole to claim his second win of the season.

Fielding out in front after British F4 qualifying

  • JHR’s Sennan Fielding increased his stranglehold on the British F4 Snetterton race weekend with a stunning qualifying performance.
  • Carlin’s DeFrancesco and Pull shine throughout the session to qualify second and third.
  • Caroline strikes back for Fortec Motorsports after difficult Friday, whilst Kjaergaard is quickest rookie.

SNETTERTON 30 JULY, 2016 – Sennan Fielding built upon his fine form in testing around the three mile Snetterton 300 circuit yesterday with a commanding pole position in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA powered by Ford. The JHR Developments driver left it late however, posting a time of 1m 52.396s on his final flying lap to put him over three tenths clear of Carlin’s DeFrancesco in second.

Fielding and DeFrancesco provided an entertaining last gasp battle for pole in the dying seconds of the session. Whilst DeFrancesco recorded the quickest middle sector on his final lap, it was Fielding who had the upper hand in sectors one and three. This proved to be enough to see him claim his second pole of the year with the added bonus of second fastest lap earning him another pole for race three of weekend.

Said a jubilant Fielding: “I was starting to doubt myself in the first half of the season. We didn’t really have any good qualifying sessions, but today is a great result. The team have done a fantastic job so a massive thank you to all of them.

“We only did one test day during the six week break and that was to make sure the car was running well and that the team had bolted it together correctly, but they’ve done a fantastic job. I would just like to say thank you to all of them.”

“We need to continue this form into the races. There is plenty of hard work ahead. We started well yesterday and we just need to keep this momentum going.

“I think the team are proving that they can take it to the likes of Carlin, Arden and Fortec. Those are teams with more resources that race all the way up the single-seater ladder to GP2. So I think for JHR who are only in their second season in single-seaters, to be competing against teams like this is an incredible. I think that shows how British F4 is a great place to be and that you can compete in this series on a limited budget.”

It was a tricky session for the Ford EcoBoost-powered young stars who were confronted with a damp and greasy circuit following a thunderstorm last night. Several drivers were caught out with Goddard, Quinn and Martins all succumbing to the gravel trap at Riches; Quinn and Martins’ respective offs enough to bring out the red flags.

However, it provided Goddard with an opportunity to trundle back to the pits. After a superb effort from his Double R team’s engineers who replaced his damaged front wing in rapid time, the Aussie was able to join the rest of the field for a thrilling final five minute shootout for pole on a drying track. A top ten grid slot was to be Goddard and Double R’s reward for their determination.

Sticking with the theme of bouncing back, Fortec Motorsport’s Jamie Caroline put in an excellent performance after a difficult day of testing yesterday to line up fourth on the grid.

Said Caroline: “I’m a little bit happier today. I lost quite a bit of time on my fastest lap, but fourth is not bad. We have a really good car and I wasn’t on the pace yesterday because of little mistakes I was making because I hadn’t been in the car since Croft. I’ve got back to grips with though. We have shown we have got the pace. I have got to thank my engineer Lego. He’s the man.”

Said Caroline’s engineer who goes by the moniker of “Lego” in the F4 British Championship paddock: “It’s great to see Jamie up there. You spend all day, every day at work smashing it out. You do it to be at the top and here we are. It’s been a long time coming to get Jamie towards the top, but we’ve made it.”

James Pull was particularly pleased with his second row grid slot, finally converting a strong showing on Friday into a qualifying success having been provisional pole sitter early on.

“Nearly on pole. We got a bit unlucky with the red flag I think. We were really fast in the first part of the session. We predicted the dampness of the track quite well and the car felt great. There are a lot of positives to take.

“I got a bit unlucky on my last flying lap as a driver in front of me went off at the last corner which meant I had to go around the outside through the water. I arrived into turn one on cold tyres so my fastest lap wasn’t ideal. P3 is still ok though. We’ve definitely broken the curse of good Fridays and bad Saturdays.”

Championship leader Max Fewtrell will line up sixth in the first of the day’s races after another solid performance behind the wheel of his Carlin prepared racer, with title rival Luis Leeds just one place ahead of him.

Fewtrell will be particularly pleased with his second fastest lap time however, netting him second on the grid for the tomorrow’s live televised race. Team-mate Florescu had a session to forget after only managing the 11th quickest time and will look to put his race craft to good use this afternoon.

Fortec Motorsport’s Nicolai Kjaergaard was another who delivered following his Friday testing form, qualifying eighth and finishing the session as quickest in the Rookie driver.

Newcomers Marinescu (Richardson Racing) and Mohnhaupt (Falcon Motorsport) drove well in the difficult conditions. They will line up 17th and 18th respectively.

Mohnhaupt said of her first F4 British Championship qualifying: “It was tough out there. The track is a tricky one and the drivers in British F4 are so strong, but I’m looking forward to races. It was a little bit wet out there so the key thing was to get temperature in the tyres. We are improving a lot on every single lap, so I think we can do well in the race.”

Round 16 of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA –powered by Ford gets underway at 1355 this afternoon followed by round 17 at 1715.

Florescu takes command of Oulton Park finale and F4 British Championship

  • Perfection from Petru on his way to fourth win of the season.
  • Fortec Motorsports’ Nicolai Kjaergaard claims maiden Rookie class victory.

OULTON PARK 5 JUNE, 2016 – Carlin’s Petru Florescu put on a perfect display to win the final F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford race of the weekend at Oulton Park. It was a straightforward race for the Romanian star driver, as he cruised his way to his fourth race win of the season and a 22 point lead in the standings.

Holding off DeFrancesco at the start, coupled with clear air to pump in some fast laps out front meant that the experienced Florescu could take a commanding victory around the 2.2 mile Cheshire track. He finished ahead of team-mate DeFrancesco, who himself executed a fantastic race to keep the flying Florescu in his sights for the duration.

Said the race winner: “We had really good pace again and fastest lap as well. I just focused on trying to stay consistent and didn’t push too much. It was a lot easier to control the pace in clear air. I’m looking forward to Croft. It’s a track I like. I’m so happy with this result and this race. It’s great for my championship and I want to say a huge thanks to the team.”

Added DeFrancesco: “At Carlin we had a meeting before the race between all the engineers and drivers and we knew the race to turn one would determine the outcome so I gave it everything at the start. I had a really good launch off the line, but I probably needed just a metre more to get in front.

“We have scored very good points for the championship and made up a lot of ground. Obviously Petru is looking very strong, but we are definitely catching up to our rivals. Carlin have got the car setup perfectly. It feels almost unbeatable.”

Jamie Caroline took his second podium of the weekend courtesy of another electrifying start which saw him speed past Max Fewtrell and not for the first time this weekend was the quickest of the non-Carlin runners.

Commented Caroline: “I was the only one able to take it to Carlin in the race. I was pleased to be able to get a good start, especially as I had to get used to the new clutch so quickly after the issue we had with the old one in race two.

“I’m very surprised to get the start that I did because with every clutch the biting point varies a little bit. There wasn’t much more we could have done in the race. Looking ahead to Croft, it’s another circuit I like. We were testing there the other day and I was straight on the pace so I’m looking forward to it.”

Max Fewtrell put in another calm and considered performance in fourth to bring home a strong points haul essential in his quest for the title; whilst James Pull performed a brilliant overtaking manoeuvre for fifth on Alex Quinn at Old Hall on lap four. Quinn was to suffer further misfortune as a gearbox issue put an end to his race on the penultimate lap.

Old Hall was the scene of further action early on as Fortec Motorsports’ Frank Bird crashed out of the race having been in 11th – four places up from his starting position.

Meanwhile Patrik Matthiesen was another early casualty, having made the same mistake at Knickerbrook as Zane Goddard had in round 11. The latter claiming the final points paying position as scant consolation for a day that promised so much for the talented Aussie racer.

Race two winner Rafael Martins was the highest of the TRS Arden runners yet again in sixth; whilst Nicolai Kjaergaard put in an inspired performance to take his first Rookie class win and hold off a hard-charging Sennan Fielding for seventh place.

Explained Kjaergaard: “It was a really good race. It’s not the ideal way to take this Rookie win with Quinn dropping out, but a win is a win and I’ll take it. I knew Sennan was quick so I was a bit worried when I saw him in my mirrors, but I was able to keep him behind. Now I know that I can compete with the very best in British F4 and I will try to do the same at Croft.”

Despite having to settle for eighth, JHR’s Fielding was still able to showcase his overtaking prowess with an expertly judged pass into Old Hall on Ayrton Simmons on lap five.

Billy Monger provided some excitement late on in proceedings, making an uncharacteristic mistake by running wide and letting TRS Arden’s Luis Leeds and Jack Martin through.

The F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford stars will be back in action in two weeks’ time at Croft circuit. Petru Florescu is sure to be riding a wave confidence after a brilliant time at Oulton Park. Having topped the times in testing at the North Yorkshire circuit earlier this week he will be many people’s tip for further success.

DeFrancesco leads the way in British F4 testing at Croft

  • Devlin DeFrancesco maintains rich run of form to top the timesheets.
  • Alex Quinn fastest in the morning session with late flyer.
  • Electrifying pace from much of the field, as majority covered by less than a second.

CROFT 31 MAY, 2016 – Carlin’s Devlin DeFrancesco set the pace in an entertaining first day of testing at Croft in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford. The test saw nine drivers lap the 2.125-mile North Yorkshire circuit quicker than last season’s pole time of 1m 21.369s. It underlined the depth of talent on this year’s grid, as well as the performance gains made by Ford with its EcoBoost technology and Mygale with the British F4 chassis.

DeFrancesco wasted no time in trying to seize the initiative, just over three weeks after his popular maiden victory at Thruxton. Despite his best efforts in the morning the Canadian wound up fourth fastest, but it was in the afternoon where he really excelled.

There was a tussle for supremacy shortly after Carlin team-mate Petru Florescu staked his claim at the top, with DeFrancesco and TRS Arden’s Luis Leeds deposing the Romanian from top spot with 40 minutes left on the clock.

Leeds posted his quickest time of the day, a 1m 20.791s to put him fractionally ahead of DeFrancesco’s first flyer. However, DeFrancesco made his second attempt count with a blistering 1m 20.671s which would see him end up outright fastest.

It was a good day for British F4’s Aussie contingent with both Leeds and Double R’s Zane Goddard topping the times at various stages. Leeds’ eye-catching afternoon performance was backed up by third fastest in the morning, whilst Goddard recorded an impressive 123 laps on his way to seventh. A tally second only to JHR’s Jack Butel, who racked up a staggering 125 laps.

Racing Steps Foundation driver Alex Quinn stamped his authority on the morning session to go quickest with just four minutes remaining. Although he was unable to better his time in the afternoon, the Rookie class leader is sure to be pleased with his day’s work, finishing just a quarter of a second off of DeFrancesco’s time.

Like Quinn, Carlin’s Max Fewtrell was another who couldn’t better his morning’s effort which saw him head into the lunchbreak second. The 16-year-old having to settle for fifth overall, just behind team-mate Petru Florescu.

Championship leader Sennan Fielding had a relatively quiet day in sixth, but is sure to have plenty more in his locker having shown flashes of front running pace, particularly in the morning.

Fortec Motrosports’ Nicolai Kjaergaard showed the greatest rate of improvement, bettering his morning time by nearly six tenths of a second with a flying lap late in the day.

Finally, Jack Martin put in one of his best testing performances of the season so far to be fastest Rookie class driver in the afternoon and finish the day comfortably inside the top ten.

Day two of testing at Croft commences at 0900 tomorrow and with the Ford EcoBoost-powered field so evenly matched, it’s going to be fascinating to see who ends the test on top.

Kjaergaard signs with Fortec for 2016 Ford MSA Formula campaign

  • 16-year-old Danish kart star lands seat with Fortec
  • Fortec confident that Kjaergaard has potential to run at the front this season

5 February, 2016 – In a week which has seen the announcement that Dane Kevin Magnussen will return to the Formula 1 grid, another driver from Denmark is looking to make waves in single-seater motorsport. Nicolai Kjaergaard is to make the step up to MSA Formula, powered by Ford EcoBoost, with Fortec Motorsports after several successful seasons in karting.

The 16-year-old from Esbjerg first went behind the wheel of a kart aged seven and started competing from the age of nine in national cadet mini and junior categories. In 2012 Nicolai ventured to Germany and Italy to add to his karting successes.

In 2013 and ’14 he finished sixth in the German Kart Championship, as well as fourth in the Trofeo Margutti. An array of top-10 finishes in the WSK karting series in 2014 and ’15 were complimented by a hugely successful foray in Danish Super Kart, which saw Nicolai storm to four race victories and numerous podium finishes.

Nicolai is relishing the prospect of proving his ability against motorsport’s brightest young talents and paid testament to Fortec: “I am delighted to have signed for Fortec in MSA Formula and I am really excited about my maiden season in cars. I feel really at home with Fortec and see the team as playing a key part in my development during the season. I know it will be a really tough championship but I am looking forward to the challenge ahead and cannot wait to get started.”

Fortec team manager Dan Mitchell said it was Nicolai’s potential which helped secure him a seat with the Northamptonshire team: “We tested Nicolai throughout November and December in Valencia and he showed promising signs. He learned and adapted quickly. Importantly, he really showed he can be on the pace. He’s gone away over January and February to work on a few things including his fitness, but if he puts the work in over the remaining winter months he can be a really good driver and someone to watch out for this season.
