3 OCTOBER, 2017 – Harry Webb endured a heart-breaking end to his F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford campaign at Brands Hatch after missing out on the Challenge Cup title in the 30th and final race of the season.

The Norfolk racer went into the weekend level on points in the race for the championship crown and aware that he had to beat chief rival Hampus Ericsson across the three races due to the Swede’s superior win record.

Harry qualified 18th on the grid for the opening race, leaving him with work to do in his bid for the Challenge Cup, with Ericsson lining up inside the top ten.

Moving up into third in class on the opening lap, the Richardson Racing ace then moved ahead of Ericsson when he ran off track on the third lap, with the pair running together for the remainder of the race.

Despite Ericsson’s best efforts, Harry kept his rival at bay to take eleventh overall and second in class; enabling him to move ahead in the race for the title.

An accident early in the second race forced officials to halt proceedings, with Harry then lining up 13th overall and fourth in class for the restart.

Holding position on the opening lap, Harry saw his chance to extend his points advantage on lap two, fighting ahead of Ericsson into third and then passing Lucca Allen for second in class.

Pulling away from the pair behind, Harry again finished second amongst the Challenge Cup drivers and matched his overall result from race to go nine points clear in the standings ahead of the finale.

Starting from 16th on the grid for the final race, Harry was aware of the need to fight his way forwards in order to maintain his advantage in the points, and he rocketed away from the line when the lights went out.

Sadly for Harry however, he was squeezed towards the pitwall by rival Jamie Sharp and was powerless to avoid contact with fellow Challenge Cup racer Allen – with the damage to the car forcing him to return to the pits.

Despite the best efforts of the team, it soon became apparent that the damage couldn’t be repaired, leaving Harry with his only retirement of the season.

With Ericsson picking up the points needed to overhaul him in the points, it means Harry ends the year as the Challenge Cup vice-champion with an impressive record of four wins and 20 podiums, and eleventh in the overall championship standings.

“I think we did all that we could have done this weekend, but sadly it wasn’t enough,” he said. “I was on the back foot after qualifying but in the first two races, I really pushed hard to get ahead of Hampus and build a lead to take into the final race.

“What happened at the start was completely out of my hands and I don’t know what else I could have done. I made a good start when the lights went out and was alongside Sharp and he just kept on coming over; I had nowhere to go.

“Of course it’s disappointing to get so close to the title and then have our chance to win it taken away like that, but overall I’m pleased with the way the season has gone.

“I can’t thank the team enough for giving me the opportunity and I wouldn’t have been on the grid without their support. It’s just a shame that I couldn’t bring them the title at the end of it.”

Caroline and Piastri go head-to-head for British F4 title

28 SEPTEMBER, 2017 – Winningest driver, highest number of wins in a season, most consecutive victories, and first person to win all three races in one meeting in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost. Jamie Caroline has made a habit of breaking records in 2017. Yet for all he has achieved, one accolade eludes him. The title.

Nevertheless, he arrives at Brands Hatch this weekend with one hand firmly on the crown. A 67.5 point lead with a maximum of 75 available means Oscar Piastri must finish first or second to take the fight on to the penultimate race, and even then a sixth or 10th place respectively for Caroline would be enough to see the Carlin ace crowned FIA British Formula 4 Champion.

Count Piastri out at your peril though. A remarkable run of 21 consecutive point scoring finishes, as well as three double pole positions and six victories (second only to Caroline’s 10) underlining the Aussie’s exceptional speed and consistency.

Time and time again the TRS Arden driver has done exactly what he has needed to do; performing under pressure, just as he did when winning last time out from Caroline to force a showdown this weekend.

Brands Hatch has been a happy hunting ground for Caroline; the scene of his breakthrough first win in the series on Finals Day last season. Fast forward six months to April at the Indy circuit, and Caroline and Piastri set the tone for their seasons. Caroline qualified on pole and raced to victory in the first and third races of the weekend. Piastri qualified alongside him on the front row and brought home a brace of podiums.

The fight to claim the inaugural Ford F4 Challenge Cup looks set to go down to the wire. Fortec Motorsports’ Hampus Ericsson and Richardson Racing’s Harry Webb arrive tied on 315.5 points, with Ericsson ahead by virtue of his eight Class wins to Webb’s four.

Ericsson’s Silverstone weekend was crucial. Two further Challenge Cup wins to make him winningest driver in the Class, coupled with a dogged effort to bring his wounded car home in the final race, has seen him claw his way to the top.

With not enough races remaining for Webb to equal Ericsson’s win tally, Webb must outscore Ericsson over the course of this weekend to take the title. Fail to do so and the Ford F4 Challenge Cup, as well as the lucrative prize of free entry to next year’s championship (worth £15,000), is Ericsson’s. Webb arguably faces the tougher task of the two, having last competed at Knockhill, while Ericsson arrives with the wind firmly in his sails.

The battle for the Teams’ Cup is finely poised too with heavyweights Carlin and TRS Arden in contention. Between them in 2017, the two squads have won 22 of the 27 races contested prior to this weekend.

Carlin are in pole position to take the title for the third year in a row with a 103 point lead. It means that if TRS Arden fail to reduce the gap to Carlin by at least 17 points in the opener, the boys and girls in blue will be celebrating a historic hat-trick.

Logan Sargeant has played a pivotal role in Carlin’s title tilt. The American’s season finally hitting the kind of heights many predicted after the summer break. He followed up his maiden victory at Rockingham with another win just a fortnight ago, after pulling off one of the overtakes of the season when he ran around the outside of Caroline to snatch the lead. Although Sargeant is out of contention for the drivers’ title he could still be a key player, doing his team-mate a favour by taking points away from Piastri.

TRS Arden’s Alex Quinn was the other victor at Silverstone. The 16-year-old followed up his 2016 British F4 Rookie title triumph at the home of British Motor Racing with another masterful performance. TRS Arden will want more of the same from their Cornish ace to take the fight to Carlin.

Ayrton Simmons and Olli Caldwell will also need to deliver for the Banbury outfit. Brands Hatch has happy memories for Simmons. The scene of his maiden victory in the series at the beginning of the year. While Caldwell arrives on a high having returned to the top step of the Ford F4 Challenge Cup podium at Silverstone.

Elsewhere in the Challenge Cup, Falcon Motorsport’s Lucca Allen made it a hat-trick of second place finishes in the Class two weeks ago. The best weekend of his fledgling single-seater career also saw him come tantalisingly close to his first top 10 finish.

Sam Smelt and GW Motorsport have consistently had the pace to fight for top 10 finishes and that’s what they did once again at Silverstone. Expect more of the same from them, with Jamie Sharp (Sharp Motorsport), Patrik Pasma (Carlin), Lucas Alecco Roy (Carlin), as well as the JHR duo of Manuel Sulaiman and Harry Dyson looking to get in on the top 10 party. The latter acquitted himself well on his Ford EcoBoost debut a fortnight ago. A 12th place finish after a battling drive up through the order, a particular highlight.

Linus Lundqvist will want to banish memories of a disastrous opening weekend at Brands Hatch, plagued by technical difficulties which saw him fail to score a single point. The super Swede has been one of the stars of the season and arrives with one goal: to add to his tally of race wins. His Double R Racing team-mate Karl Massaad will have wins on his mind too, having already starred on the podium in 2017.

In addition to battling for Ford F4 Challenge Cup honours with Ericsson, Fortec Motorsports will be want to bring home even more silverware with Oliver York and Johnathan Hoggard. York has become a regular podium fixture since his maiden win at Knockhill, while Hoggard finally made it onto the rostrum last time out after an inspired drive.

TEAM NEWS: Harry Webb secures Ford F4 Challenge Cup lead at Knockhill

15 AUGUST, 2018 – Harry Webb moved himself into pole position in the race for the Challenge Cup title as the F4 British Championship Certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost headed for Knockhill for the seventh meeting of the season.

Harry went into the weekend keen to try and overhaul Oliver York at the top of the standings in his first outing since Croft prior to the summer break, with the previous meeting at Snetterton having not been part of his season schedule.

The Richardson Racing driver qualified 13th on the grid for the opening race of the weekend with Harry producing a solid drive in his first outing for some eight weeks to cross the line in eleventh spot as third best of the Challenge Cup drivers.

The second race of the weekend was the rescheduled twelfth round of the campaign from Oulton Park, with Harry starting from ninth place on the grid.

Making up two places on the opening lap, the 20-year-old battled his way towards the podium positions to lie fourth, but contact from Challenge Cup rival York at the Hairpin on lap 19 damaged the front wing.

Losing pace as a result, Harry was forced to defend as best he could during the closing laps before crossing the line in seventh overall, and second best of the Challenge Cup racers.

Race three on Sunday morning saw Harry once again show his overtaking prowess as he produced another impressive drive from eleventh on the grid.

Battling his way through the field, Harry would be involved in one of the most dramatic moments of the race as he went three wide with points leader Jamie Caroline and Oscar Piastri en-route to a strong seventh place finish – adding another Challenge Cup podium to his name in the process.

Carrying ITV4’s live camera onboard for the final race of the weekend, Harry once again brought his car to the finish inside the top eight overall and secured his fourth Challenge Cup win of the campaign.

It means that he now leads the way in the Challenge Cup standings with three rounds of the season still to run.

Having competed in six of the required seven meetings, Harry’s next appearance in the championship will be on Finals Day at Brands Hatch at the end of September.

“I’m happy overall with how the weekend has gone,” he said. “Red flags in qualifying caught us out a bit and meant we didn’t qualify as high as we could have done, but when you consider I hadn’t been in the car since Croft and was a little rusty compared to everyone else, we came back well in the races.

“There is some frustration at the contact in the rescheduled race from Oulton Park because we were on for a really good result in that one, but we’ve moved up a place in the overall championship standings and have got into the lead of the Challenge Cup which was the main aim going into the weekend.

“We’ve had our fair share of misfortune this year and as a single car team against people running three or four cars, I think we’ve done a very good job and we’ve got ourselves into a good position going into the final round.

“Obviously I can’t control what the guys who will be racing at Rockingham and Silverstone do so we’ll need to see what the position is when we get to Brands Hatch but I’ve done what I can and that final round can’t come soon enough!”

13 AUGUST, 2017 – TRS Arden wrapped up the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost weekend at Knockhill in style with an emphatic 1-2-3 finish. Oscar Piastri took his fifth win of the campaign from Alex Quinn and Ayrton Simmons.

Piastri, Quinn and Simmons were untouchable out front trading fastest lap times for the duration. Their respective quickest laps of the race covered by a mere 0.022s.

It was a dominant display from the TRS Arden trio who controlled proceedings from the outset, with Piastri and Quinn getting away brilliantly off the line and Simmons jumping Jamie Caroline to move immediately into third.

From then on the only threat was from Carlin’s Logan Sargeant who Simmons kept at bay, acting as rear gunner for Piastri and Quinn ahead, particularly after a Safety Car period six laps into the race.

“I hope to keep having this winning feeling,” said a beaming Piastri. “I got a good start but Alex’s was a bit better. After that I think I had just a little bit more pace than the rest of the field.

“I saw that Jamie was in fifth and that took the pressure off a little, but also motivated me to score as many points as I could to take as much out of his lead in the standings as possible.

“It’s great to get a 1-2-3 for the team. Ayrton was fastest in testing on Wednesday, Alex was fastest on Friday in free practice and then I put it on pole on Saturday. It’s amazing really and fantastic to deliver a result like this. To get a 1-2-3 and put it all together when it really matters is something very special.”

“It’s awesome to be a part of this historic result,” added Quinn. “Oscar and I both got good starts and tried to break away.

“The tyres weren’t completely in at the beginning because we ran new ones, not scrubbed, which made it a little bit challenging. Nevertheless, the three of us managed to get away out front.

“I’ve got to say a massive thanks to Total Rail Solutions and Arden because they have been able to provide us as drivers with this incredible opportunity to succeed.

“I felt like I was a little bit quicker and closing slightly on Oscar before the Safety Car, but I’m happy with second and the points, especially on a weekend that probably wasn’t my best. It’s nice to end it on a high.”

“To get a 1-2-3 finish in British F4 is such a hard thing to achieve,” explained Simmons. “It doesn’t happen very often because the series is so competitive.

“We all had the exact same pace. Arden do an amazing job to bring in the right drivers who will click as a team and perform individually as well.

“I kept my head down in the race after jumping past Jamie at the start. I tried to catch and pass Alex, but it was really tricky to follow him through the high speed corners, plus I had to manage my race carefully because Sargeant was behind me.”

Like Simmons, Sargeant capitalised upon team-mate Caroline’s slow start to take fourth and kept the TRS Arden runners under pressure for the duration.

Caroline’s slow start stemmed from a mechanical problem which he was forced to manage for the entire race while fending off Double R Racing’s Linus Lundqvist who had climbed two places on the opening lap.  The duo provided an enthralling battle for spectators, as two of the F4 British Championship’s heavyweights duked it out around the 1.27-mile Fife track lap after lap for fifth place.

Patrik Pasma got in on the act too, bringing home his best result of the weekend and valuable points behind the pair in seventh.

Harry Webb triumphed in the battle for Ford F4 Challenge Cup honours and with it rose to the top of the Class standings for the first time this season. The Richardson Racing ace’s fourth win in the Class propelling him ahead of Oliver York, having trailed him by 14 points heading into the race.

Webb had to work hard for it though, fighting his way from outside the top 10 to eighth and kept Challenge Cup rival Olli Caldwell behind him in an exciting duel. Meanwhile Fortec Motorsports’ Hampus Ericsson followed them home to take the final step on the Class rostrum and complete the top 10.

“It’s great to take the lead in the Ford F4 Challenge Cup, we’ve been working towards this all season,” said Webb. “I got a good start and picked up some places. Others had some problems and that helped up a bit.

“I was really pleased to be able to keep Caldwell at bay and take the Challenge Cup win. My tyres were pretty worn in that race and he got quite close for several laps, but I managed to respond and stretch out a small gap to give me some breathing space.

“Taking the lead in the Challenge Cup standings is really important and I hope I stay on top. Winning it would earn me free entry into the championship next year and hopefully if we can get the sponsorship in place I can come back for a second year and fight for the title.

“It’s an even better feeling to come out on top this weekend with my sponsors here. I know everyone says it, but I really wouldn’t be on the grid without them. So big thanks Loco Energy Drink, Walero, EACS, The Helmet Company and Rock Oil.”

Ericsson’s Fortec Motorsports team-mates, York and Johnathan Hoggard, endured frustrating races. York suffered a spin early on and later had contact with JHR Developments’ Manuel Sulaiman which put paid to his chances of following up his maiden win with a points haul. Hoggard once again encountered front wing damage on a luckless weekend when his pace in testing and qualifying promised so much.

The contact between York and Sulaiman saw the latter miss out on a hard earned top 10 finish. The Mexican’s car was stranded on the entry to Taylor’s Hairpin, causing the race to be red flagged and with it the chequer with just seconds of the 20 minute race remaining.

The F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost is back in action in a fortnight’s time (26/27 August) when the title battle will resume at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

TEAM NEWS: Triple top ten for Richardson Racing’s Harry Webb as British F4 season hits half-way

14 JUNE, 2017 – Harry Webb secured another three top ten finishes as the F4 British Championship Certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost reached the half way stage at Croft.

The Richardson Racing driver made the long trip to North Yorkshire from his Norfolk home eager to build on a solid weekend at Oulton Park, where he secured a brace of victories in the series’ new Ford F4 Challenge Cup.

Qualifying in wet conditions saw Webb secure ninth on the grid, with an impressive opening lap seeing him vault up to fifth when the first race kicked off.

Having climbed into the top four after an early Safety Car period, Harry looked well placed to push towards the podium positions before a small, uncharacteristic mistake meant he lost places on the grass on lap seven. Despite that, he was able to maintain his position as best of the Challenge Cup drivers en-route to seventh place.

A solid eighth place finish then followed in the second race of the weekend, which took place in dry conditions on Sunday, despite the fact that Webb was hit in the rear by one of his on-track rivals.

A tenth place finish in race three then ensured Webb heads into the summer break having moved up to ninth in the championship standings.

Three more Challenge Cup podiums – making it 14 from 14 races – means Webb maintains second place amongst the Challenge Cup racers at the half-way point of the season.

“It’s been a bit of a mixed weekend, but we’ve been able to stay in touch in the Challenge Cup standings and have also moved up a position in the overall championship,” he said. “When it was wet on Saturday, we were really strong and I think that was reflected in the performance in race one.

“I got a really good start to make up places and it’s unfortunate that I made a small mistake that saw me slip back as we were on for a really good result.

“In the dry conditions on Sunday, we didn’t quite have the same pace in the car so I just tried to make sure that I stayed out of trouble and picked up more points for the championship to maintain my position.”

TEAM NEWS: Strongest weekend yet for Harry Webb at Oulton Park

23 MAY, 2017 – Harry Webb enjoyed his most competitive weekend to date as the F4 British Championship Certified by FIA – powered by Ford headed to Oulton Park for the fourth meeting of the year.

Webb and his Corby-based Richardson Racing team made the journey to Cheshire looking to rebound from a challenging weekend at Thruxton.

Webb headed into the weekend in optimistic mood, and despite the fact he was visiting Oulton Park for the first time, he produced a strong performance in qualifying to snare ninth on the grid as the quickest of the Challenge Cup entrants.

The arrival of rain ahead of race one only added to the challenge, but it was one that Harry would grab with both hands as he made up two places at the start and then became embroiled in a race long fight for sixth place with championship contender Oscar Piastri.

Despite his best efforts, Webb was unable to find a way ahead and settled for seventh spot – taking his first victory amongst the Ford F4 Challenge Cup drivers at the same time.

Just missing out on the reverse grid for race two, Webb again made a fine start and was soon battling hard for position in the top five before a heavy accident for championship leader Jamie Caroline at turn one saw the race red-flagged.

With the decision taken to call the result, Webb matched his best overall finish of fourth place and secured Ford F4 Challenge Cup honours for the second time in the weekend to close the gap to points leader Oliver York.

Webb ended the weekend sitting tenth in the overall championship standings.

“I’m really happy with the weekend,” he said. “The aim coming here was to try and score some good points and pick up some strong finishes, and that’s exactly what we managed to do. The team has given me a great car again and  we were able to show more of our potential.

“Considering I hadn’t been to Oulton Park before, it was great that we were able to produce a strong performance in both the wet and the dry. To get my first win in the Ford F4 Challenge Cup was great, and to then add a second and finish inside the top four overall in race two just made things better.

“We stayed out of trouble and have scored some good points, and I’m confident that we can build on these results and push for the overall podium positions next time out.”

Schedule delays during Saturday mean that Round 12 of the British F4 season will now provisionally be run at Knockhill later in the year.

TEAM NEWS: Impressive pace for Harry Webb on British F4 debut

3 APRIL – Harry Webb showcased his undoubted potential with an impressive performance on track as the new F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost burst into life at Brands Hatch.

The opening rounds of the season marked the start of Webb’s bid for British F4’s new Challenge Cup, which will see him contest seven meetings this year with the Corby-based Richardson Racing team.

Having shown top ten pace during Friday testing, the Norfolk race ace went into the weekend in confident mood, but his qualifying session was hampered by a technical problem.

With the problem resolved by the team in time for race one, Harry took his place in 14th spot on the grid with his aim to try and move forwards up the order towards the top ten.

Despite the difficulty in overtaking around the tight and twisty Indy layout, Webb was able to cross the line in twelfth place having shown impressive speed throughout the race – which included setting the fastest time of any driver through the second sector of the lap.

A strong start to race two was key to Webb breaking into the top ten for the first time as he crossed the line in tenth to also score his first overall championship point, and he repeated the feat in race three to leave him sitting tenth in the early season standings.

Webb also ended the weekend with three podium finishes amongst the Ford F4 Challenge Cup entrants, offering plenty of encouragement for the races to come.

“I’ve really enjoyed the weekend and it’s just a shame we had the problem in qualifying,” he said. “That put us on the back foot for the races as it’s really difficult to pass around here, so we didn’t have the opportunity to show our real potential in terms of the results.

“What is encouraging is the pace in all three races was really good, and I think we’ve made good improvements throughout the weekend.

“I’ve certainly been able to learn a lot about the car this weekend and I think that will help me when we get to Donington Park for the next round.”

Richardson Racing confirms Harry Webb for British F4

29 MARCH, 2017 – On the back of a successful pre-season testing programme in recent weeks, Richardson Racing is pleased to confirm that it has agreed terms on a deal with Harry Webb for the 2017 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford season.

Webb becomes the first driver to sign with Corby-based Richardson Racing for the new British F4 campaign, with discussions ongoing with a number of other drivers about the currently vacant second car.

The Norfolk racer joins the British F4 grid on the back of a stellar career in karting, which has seen him secure championship silverware at the highest levels of the sport.

Eager to take his career to the next level after making the move into car racing last year in Formula Vee, Webb has already shown his potential with a series of impressive performances during testing.

That included an eye-catching performance on his first outing in the car at Brands Hatch in mid-February, when his pace in the wet was a match for anyone else on track.

With further solid performances at Donington Park, Snetterton and Rockingham under his belt, Webb has now agreed terms on a deal that will see him compete in British F4’s all-new Ford F4 Challenge Cup.

Drivers in the Challenge Cup will compete in seven of British F4’s ten meetings, with the events at Knockhill in August and the Brands Hatch season finale at the end of September being mandatory.

Webb and the team will then nominate five other meetings in which he will compete this year – the first of which will be held at Brands Hatch this weekend as the 2017 season gets underway.

“I’m really happy we’ve been able to do this deal and without doubt, moving into British F4 is the biggest step in my career so far,” he said. “Testing has gone really well and I think I’ve improved every time we’ve been out on track, which leaves me feeling confident about the year ahead.

“Of course it won’t be easy because I’m still learning about the car and will have to learn some of the circuits, but I’m not planning to just make up the numbers and I want to run towards the front of the field.

“The more races I do and the more experience I gain, the easier that should be and there is no doubt that I’m aiming to try and win races before the season is done.”

“From the moment he first got into the car, Harry has shown real potential behind the wheel and we’re obviously delighted that we’ve been able to strike a deal,” said team boss Gwyn Richardson.

“Although he hasn’t done as much testing as some of the other drivers on the grid, he has already shown front-running pace on track and is only going to get quicker as the season goes on. With that in mind, we have no doubt that he will be challenging for podium positions over the course of the year at the very least.

“He certainly has the talent to win races and we think he could become a real force to be reckoned with in British F4.”
