Ginetta Junior Rookie champion Kiern Jewiss chooses Ford EcoBoost power and completes Double R’s 2018 British F4 line-up

  • Highly-rated teen Kiern Jewiss completes Double R’s 2018 F4 entry.
  • Ginetta Junior Rookie champion makes single-seater switch.
  • Rapid 15-year-old ‘one to watch’ after topping British F4 pre-season testing.

7 MARCH, 2018 – 2017 Ginetta Junior Rookie champion Kiern Jewiss has been confirmed as Double R Racing’s third signing for the 2018 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford Ecoboost, which gets underway in just one month’s time.

15-year-old Jewiss impressed during his first season in cars last year on his way to the Rookie crown and a top four overall finish in the Ginetta Junior Championship. The talented teenager from Maidstone, Kent followed up by finishing runner-up in the Ginetta Junior Winter Series.

With an enviable record in karting, which features no fewer than 11 titles and includes success in the high profile Kartmasters British Grand Prix, the Super 1 National Rotax Mini Max Championship and the WSK Champions Cup, he is undoubtedly one of the UK’s top young talents.

Winning his first championship in 2010 in Honda Cadet, Jewiss won titles in every subsequent year of his karting career and maintained the trend in his debut season in cars by winning the Ginetta Junior Rookie crown with an unprecedented 17 class victories.

Managed by former Formula 1 driver and Formula Ford alumni Mark Blundell’s sports agency MB Partners, Jewiss has already laid down a marker in British F4 with a headline-grabbing performance in the first official pre-season test at Brands Hatch Indy circuit last month.

On a day plagued by inclement weather which meant the entire field conducted all its running on Hankook wet tyres, Jewiss produced a time of 52.976 seconds to put him almost two seconds clear of his nearest rival.

Looking ahead to his maiden season in single-seaters, Jewiss said: “I’m very excited. It’s a big step, but it’s a step in the right direction for my development.

“The F4 British Championship is a fantastic series and I can’t wait to be part of it. It’s hugely competitive and some great drivers have made their name here. I hope to do the same in my debut season.

“Double R have proved themselves as a top team, not just in F4 but across several championships. They were a front running team last year and the way testing has started this year it seems we’ll still be performing at the highest level. Anthony [Hieatt] and the team have made me feel really welcome so we’re all looking forward to the year ahead.”

He added: “Obviously I’m here to win so that’s the main goal, but to do that I need to develop and learn every time I get into the car. I don’t expect to walk into the championship and instantly be at my best, but I’m a quick learner and therefore aiming to perform at my optimum as quickly as I can.”

Jewiss joins Finland’s Paavo Tonteri and Mexico’s Sebastian Alvarez at Double R for the 2018 British F4 season. It is a line-up which team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt is confident will deliver strong performances throughout the season.

“Kiern got his F4 career off to an incredible start during the official test at Brands Hatch last month,” explained Hieatt. “He was very impressive in difficult conditions and showed the speed we all know is there from his time in Ginetta Junior and karting.”

“I’ve no doubt he’ll be battling at the sharp end all season. He’s a fast and committed driver. We’re certain he’s going to be one to watch throughout the year and delighted to have signed Kiern to join Paavo and Sebastian. All three drivers are new to F4 and single-seaters, but it’s a line-up we believe has massive potential.”

Brands Hatch, the ‘home’ track for Double R Racing and Jewiss, will be the venue for the season opening British F4 race meeting on 7/8 April. The Ford EcoBoost-powered series will tour the UK, visiting its premier race circuits such as Donington Park and Silverstone, before returning to Brands Hatch for the season finale on 29/30 September.

  • Finland’s Paavo Tonteri joins Double R for 2018 British F4 campaign.
  • Multiple karting champion is team’s second F4 signing for 2018.
  • Tonteri set for debut season in cars with race winners Double R.

6 MARCH, 2018 – Multiple karting champion Paavo Tonteri has been announced as the second driver signing of 2018 for Double R Racing’s F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford Ecoboost squad.

Finnish karting ace Tonteri will make his car racing debut with Woking’s Double R on the back of a very strong karting career, which delivered several championship titles and a brace of top four finishes in the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship.

Similarly to recently announced Double R team-mate Sebastian Alvarez, Tonteri is represented by Infinity Sports Management. The 18-year-old won his first title in the Finnish Cup in 2012 before claiming the North European KF3 Karting Championship in 2013.

Taking his third title in as many years in the KF Junior class of the Finnish Championship in 2014, Tonteri achieved a top three placing at the prestigious South Garda Winter Cup in 2015, as well as third in the KF class of the Finnish Championship.

Tonteri went on to win the highly competitive German Karting Championship in 2016 to make it four karting crowns in just five years. He was also crowned vice-champion of the Finnish OK Karting Championship that year and secured third place in the German Championship last year.

“I’m really happy to join Double R as they are certainly one of the best teams in the UK,” said Tonteri. “Racing with Double R will take me further as a driver and hopefully I can take them further as a team as well. Double R has a great philosophy of racing, and with great people around me I’m very excited for the new season.”

A leading team on the single-seater scene, Double R Racing has a host of achievements to its name, including multiple race wins in British F4, two British Formula 3 titles and a win in the globally renowned Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix in 2006.

Double R team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt said: “Paavo really is a great young talent. His record from karting speaks for itself. We’re confident he’s going to adapt to British Formula 4 very quickly and be a competitive driver.

“It’s a tough championship for any youngster, especially in their first season, but from what we’ve seen so far Paavo looks set for a strong year. With Paavo joining Sebastian [Alvarez] we’ve already got a great young line-up with one driver still to confirm!”

Kent’s Brands Hatch Indy circuit, Double R Racing’s ‘home’ track, will host the season curtain-raiser for the 2018 F4 British Championship on 7/8 April. The Ford EcoBoost-powered single-seater stars of the future will visit the UK’s premier race circuits during the campaign which include Donington Park, Oulton Park and Silverstone, prior to the season finale at Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit on 29/30 September.

Reigning British F4 champion Jamie Caroline set to race in America

5 MARCH, 2018 – 2017 British F4 Champion Jamie Caroline has today confirmed that he is moving across the pond to contest the 2018 USF2000 Championship with BN Racing.

Crowned FIA British Formula 4 champion with the most race victories and highest points tally recorded in the history of the series, surpassing that of 2015 champion Lando Norris, Jamie finds himself looking to America to further his career.

Budget constraints leave Jamie unable to take the next step on the traditional British motorsport ladder. Determined not to give up on his career he has made the bold decision to take on America, setting his sights on the Mazda Road to Indy scholarship programme.

Jamie’s first outing in the USF2000 car is this weekend (9-11 March) at the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg and without any pre-season testing under his belt, Jamie knows he has a steep learning curve ahead.

“I’ve always had my eye on racing in America. There seem to be more opportunities for young drivers, the competition is good, plus the whole Mazda Road to Indy scholarship is pretty exciting.” Jamie explained.

“When I heard from BN Racing I was immediately interested. The team looked strong in pre-season testing and with a British team owner I’m sure I will feel right at home. It’s not going to be easy racing on tracks I don’t know without any testing, but I’m definitely up to the challenge and I’m not going out there to make up the numbers.

“I am of course sad to be leaving the British motorsport scene and some of my UK-based sponsors behind, but the opportunities just aren’t available for me to race with a top team in the UK. This is the best career move for me and I hope to find some new sponsors to work with in the US.

“To compete in a Verizon IndyCar support series is awesome. I just want to race, it’s what I’m good at and I’m not ready to give up.”

“Jamie’s resume speaks for itself,” expressed BN Racing’s Bryn Nuttall. “He has had success with multiple teams in many different series’, ultimately topping the end of the year points battles in many of them. A quick study off the track and even faster on it, Jamie will be the final piece in a powerful BN Racing line-up for 2018.

5 MARCH, 2018 – Mexico’s Sebastian Alvarez will make his car racing debut in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford Ecoboost this year, having been announced as the first confirmed driver for multiple race-winning team Double R Racing.

The 15-year-old, who resides in Mexico City, arrives in British F4 with a strong karting background in America, Mexico and on the world stage.

Winning the 2011 Super Karts Cadet Cup in Mexico, Alvarez progressed through Cadet Karting and Mini Max in the USA over the next few years, taking his second title in the 2015 Florida Winter Tour Rotax Mini Max Championship.

Stepping up to the CIK-FIA World Junior Championship the following season, Alvarez moved into the WSK Champions Cup and WSK Super Masters Series in 2017 and also contested the CIK-FIA World Championship and CIK-FIA European Championship.

Part of the Infinity Sports Management stable, Alvarez is relishing his first season in cars and looking forward to working with Double R Racing, as well as getting the chance to compete at the UK’s premier race tracks in the live-televised F4 British Championship.

“I’m really excited to join Double R and looking forward to the start of the season,” said the Mexican teenager.

“The car is great to drive, the guys at the team are really professional and fantastic to work with. I’m sure we’re going to have a good season. It’s great to be racing in British F4 this year.”

Double R Racing enters the new British F4 season aiming for another strong year after a successful 2017, which saw the squad win five races with Sweden’s Linus Lundqvist who has stepped-up to the squad’s British Formula 3 team for 2018.

Commenting on Alvarez’s signing, Double R team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt said: “We’re very much looking forward to working with Sebastian, he’s a talented young driver and brings good experience from karting where he’s a championship winner already.

“British F4 is the logical first step for any driver coming out of karting and I’m sure Sebastian is going to make very strong progress throughout the season. We’re delighted to announce him as our first British F4 driver this year and looking forward to a competitive season together.”

Brands Hatch Indy circuit in Kent will host the opening three races of the British F4 season over the weekend 7/8 April, before visiting Donington Park in Leicestershire, Thruxton in Hampshire, Oulton Park in Cheshire and Croft in North Yorkshire.

Following a mid-summer break, the F4 British Championship resumes at Snetterton in Norfolk at the end of July before heading to Rockingham in Northamptonshire, Knockhill in Scotland and Silverstone in Northamptonshire. The series concludes at Brands Hatch, on the longer Grand Prix circuit, over the weekend 29/30 September.

Sharp confirms British F4 return

2 MARCH, 2018 – Jamie Sharp has confirmed a return to the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost with his father’s outfit Sharp Motorsport.

A maiden season for Sharp and the team in single-seaters last year yielded a handful of top-10 finishes, with a best result of seventh coming at Donington Park on the way to 15th in the standings.

Both are now targeting a move up the grid, buoyed by their showing in the first official pre-season test at Brands Hatch which saw them record the fourth-fastest time.

Said Jamie Sharp: “I’m really looking forward to this season. We’ve been working hard over the winter and I’m confident heading into the first race on the back of all the training I have done.

“I feel prepared for a more successful year, but we need to see how the rest of testing goes to get a more accurate picture of how competitive we are.

“I hope to be running at the front from the very early stages and I’m excited to see how much the team and I progress throughout the year.”

“We’ve worked incredibly hard over the winter to give Jamie the best possible chance this year,” added team boss Joe Sharp.

“Jamie’s got new management so 2018 should be a good year for us. We’re doing lots of things differently – we’ve had a year of learning now.”

It’s been a successful winter with regard to sponsorship for the team from Rochdale. It heads into the season with the continued support of Roydon Group, UK Truck Sale, Universal Bodies, The Vehicle Wrapping Centre in Leeds and has added J Davidson and Kelsa Truck Products to the roster.

J Davidson are specialists in scrap metal processing, while Kelsa design and manufacture a wide range of high quality anodised aluminium and polished stainless steel spotlight bars for trucks.

Sharp also raised the prospect of running more than one car in 2018 and is eager to increase the number of drivers in the squad, as it continues to reap the rewards from working with Stuart Jones’ Pure Pace Performance Management.

“We’re in talks with other drivers so we may be running more than one car,” he said. “Jamie needs a team-mate for the data and it makes us a team.

“We have a new performance package in place now and see ourselves as a fully functioning, competitive race team which has earned the right to stand alongside the established teams in the paddock.

“With the training and development plans we have put in place with Pure Pace Performance Management, which are aimed at improving all aspects of the team including technical, sporting and commercial, it will be interesting to see where we are in relation to the competition. I cannot wait to see what we achieve this year.”

Hoggard sets sights on top step with F4 British Championship return

21 FEBRUARY, 2018 – Talented 17-year-old Johnathan Hoggard from Spalding, UK has re-joined forces with Fortec Motorsports for the 2018 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost, after showing great potential over four meetings in the UK’s leading junior single-seater series last season.

Despite his young age, Hoggard’s motor racing career already boasts numerous achievements. A rapid rise through the karting ranks saw him win the prestigious Official MSA Junior Karting Championship, claim third in the Super 1 National Rotax Max Junior series and represent Great Britain in the Rotax Grand Final in Sarno, Italy.

Like so many of the world’s top karters, the step up to the F4 British Championship beckoned and he joined the Ford EcoBoost-powered field half-way through the 2017 campaign.

Hoggard wasted no time showcasing his talent behind the wheel of a single-seater, recording the fastest time in testing at both Snetterton and Silverstone. The latter became the scene of his maiden podium, as he stood alongside eventual champion Jamie Caroline and vice-champion Oscar Piastri.

“I’m delighted that everything has finally been agreed, allowing me to compete in the F4 British Championship with Fortec Motorsports this year,” said Hoggard.

“Last year my priority was to focus on my education and GCSE examinations. This meant I was only able to compete in four meetings at the end of the season.

“To get that first podium finish at Silverstone so early on in my single-seater career was the standout moment from a restricted rookie campaign.

“Winter testing has gone exceptionally well. Fortec have given me fantastic support and guidance to ensure I am fully prepared for this season.

“We have a great spirit within the team, with superb people and the winning mentality which is needed to challenge for the championship.

“I’m incredibly excited to see what we can achieve during the course of 2018.”

Having proved to be more than a match for the class of 2017, Hoggard has got his sights set firmly on the top step this year. It is an ambition shared by Fortec Motorsports British F4 team manager Oliver Dutton.

“We are delighted that Johnathan is remaining part of the Fortec family this year,” he said.

“Johnathan is a product of the Fortec Driver Development Programme and we have watched him mature during a very successful winter testing programme. He has impressed us with his excellent pace and consistency throughout.

“I am confident he will develop into a race winner, and with hard work and determination a strong championship contender.”

Ford F4 Challenge Cup champion Hampus Ericsson returns to British F4

16 FEBRUARY, 2018 – 15-year-old Hampus Ericsson from Kumla, Sweden will contest the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost with Fortec Motorsports in 2018, after winning the Ford F4 Challenge Cup in the final race of the 2017 season.

Ericsson returns to the UK’s leading junior single-seater series after an impressive rookie year in which he secured a record nine Challenge Cup class wins, whilst also stepping onto the main podium at Knockhill and Brands Hatch. This year the young Team BAUHAUS backed driver returns with his eyes firmly on the main prize.

“I am thrilled to be returning to the F4 British Championship after winning the Challenge Cup last season and can’t wait for the first round at Brands Hatch,” said Ericsson.

“I am excited to be back with Fortec after a successful 2017 season. Last year was a big learning curve for me. It was my first time in a single-seater and I had to become familiar with all the British tracks.

“I feel very comfortable with the team and after some great finishes last year I’m confident we can work together to achieve a top result. I am doing everything within my power to prepare myself both physically and mentally for a competitive 2018 season.

“A massive thank you to my sponsor Team BAUHAUS for making this possible, and everyone who has invested in myself and my career so far.”

Ericsson, the youngest member of Svensk Bilsport – Sweden’s national team for drivers – turned heads in the final round of the 2017 F4 British Championship at Brands Hatch. The Swede made a bold move around the outside of vice-champion Oscar Piastri at Druids and swiftly overtook newly-crowned champion Jamie Caroline at the following corner, as he fought through the field from from ninth on the grid to seize the final spot on the podium.

Ericsson’s pedigree and talent are unquestionable as he looks to prove himself on the main stage and race at the front of a highly competitive field, featuring a host of gifted youngsters.

Ericsson’s older brother, Marcus, was no stranger to success with the Fortec Motorsports team. He won the Formula BMW UK Championship in his rookie year and went on to score a number of podiums with the team in Formula 3 before climbing his way up to Formula 1.

“Hampus has showed great natural talent over the past year and we have kept this momentum over winter testing,” said Fortec Motorsports team manager Oliver Dutton.

“There’s no doubting that Hampus has raw speed and talent. He has been very competitive throughout his karting career and set the lap record at the World Junior Karting Finals in Bahrain.

“Hampus is maturing into a confident racing driver. He knows what it takes to be successful and is very passionate about the sport. I am excited to see what Hampus can deliver this year.”

Supplied by driver’s PR.

  • Swedish youngster re-signs with Double R Racing.
  • F3 progression follows race-winning British F4 campaign.

12 FEBRUARY, 2018 – Linus Lundqvist has renewed his contract with Double R Racing for the 2018 season, stepping up to the team’s British F3 arm.

18-year-old Lundqvist makes the transition following a successful rookie season in Double R Racing’s F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost operation in 2017, which saw the Swede claim five race wins, 11 podiums, five pole positions and an unparalleled nine fastest laps en route to fifth in the drivers’ standings.

“I am thrilled about this opportunity to race full-time in British Formula 3 this season,” said Lundqvist. “The moment the F4 season finished, this is what we started working towards, and I’m so grateful that we’ve managed to put this together with Double R Racing. I really enjoyed working with the team last year in F4 and can’t wait to get going again in F3. It will be an even bigger challenge, of course, but I’m heading into this aiming to win.”

Lundqvist has some previous experience of British F3, having contested one round of the series last season when deputising for one of Double R Racing’s regular drivers at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium).

“I learned a lot from that one-off at Spa last year, and it remained one of the highlights of my season,” explained Lundqvist. “The car is so much fun to drive, and by the end of that weekend, I was down to just a few tenths off the fastest guys. Having done that race at Spa also means I will be familiar with all the tracks on the calendar; I obviously know the British ones from racing in British F4. There will still be things to learn, but overall I’m feeling pretty confident going into pre-season testing.”

“We’re super excited Linus is remaining with the team for the step-up into British F3 and we’re confident he’s going to be every bit as competitive in F3 as he was in British F4 last year,” added team principal Anthony “Boyo” Hieatt. “Linus is a quality driver, a real genuine prospect, and our aim is to be regularly challenging for podiums and race wins as the championship unfolds. We’ve got a fantastic relationship and everyone at the team is very hungry to achieve a lot of success in British F3 this season.”

Fortec Motorsports sign Lucca Allen for 2018 F4 British Championship

1 FEBRUARY, 2018 – Irish racing prodigy Lucca Allen has joined Fortec Motorsports to compete in the 2018 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.

Having contested the second half of the 2017 British F4 season following his fifteenth birthday, Allen returns to the UK’s leading junior single-seater series this year as he continues to work his way up the FIA single-seater pyramid to Formula 1.

Allen is one of Ireland’s leading contenders to become a future Formula 1 star and follows in the footsteps of many of the sport’s most notable champions by choosing to compete in Britain, the home of Formula 1.

Furthermore, striking a deal to race with front-running squad Fortec Motorsports serves as a signal of intent from Allen. Drivers who have enjoyed success with the British team include Juan Pablo Montoya, Marcus Ericsson, Stoffel Vandoorne and Charles Leclerc, to name but a few.

Allen’s rise up through the regional and national karting ranks saw him win the Irish race of champions’ trophy in 2015 and the National Irish Championship in 2014. His strong karting record has provided him with an ideal foundation from which to make the step up to racing cars in the F4 British Championship, where he became the first Irish racer to compete in the series and recorded 10 Ford F4 Challenge Cup podiums.

“It’s a great honour to drive for one of the top teams in British F4,” said Allen. “My tests with Fortec last year went really well. I am very grateful to them for taking me on and giving me the opportunity to fight for the title. I cannot wait for the season to start!”

“We are very excited to have Lucca join the Fortec family and to see him race in our iconic red, white and black livery during the 2018 F4 British Championship,” added Fortec Motorpsorts team manager Oliver Dutton.

“Lucca impressed during winter testing, showing us he had the pace and determination to fight at the front of the pack.

“Lucca has a fantastic ability to capture, process and retain information and then translate it onto the track. I am confident that he will continue to improve and develop this year and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together.”
