Reigning champions Carlin unveil Matias Zagazeta for 2020

  • Peruvian rising star graduates into British F4 with single-seater powerhouse Carlin.
  • Zagazeta becomes fourth confirmed driver in Ford EcoBoost-powered category for 2020, with further news due out in the coming weeks.
  • Trevor Carlin excited by Zagazeta’s potential as his squad target a fifth crown in Britain’s FIA Formula 4 series.

Carlin have announced that karting star Matias Zagazeta will join their outfit for the 2020 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost season.

The Peruvian graduates into Britain’s FIA-sanctioned Formula 4 series after an extensive karting career. Zagazeta started his racing career aged 8 in his home country, becoming the Peruvian National Champion in the Mini 60 (IAME) in 2013, ’14 and ’16.

After a switch to Argentina in ’14, then the USA, Zagazeta continued his development as runner-up in Junior X30, including a podium at Indianapolis.

Back in Europe, Zagazeta competed in the Junior X30 and OKJ with Fusion Motorsport, also contesting the IAME Euro Series where he claimed pole position in Genk and the IAME X30 International Finals where he was a runner-up following two heat wins.

A season in OK Senior for the WSK Series and CIK European and World Championships followed in 2018, and the X30 Senior British Championship and selected OK Senior Races in 2019 has allowed Zagazeta to fully prepare his race craft for the switch to single-seaters.

Zagazeta will be well-placed for that move, with reigning champions Carlin heading into 2020 on a high after Zane Maloney’s triumph at the Brands Hatch title decider in October.

The Farnham-based team will be aiming for a fifth title in as many years of competing in the Ford EcoBoost-powered series in 2020; the only exception to their winning streak of titles is 2018, which the team elected to miss.

“I’m so pleased to be joining Carlin for the upcoming season – it will be my first season outside of karting and I can’t think of a better way to start my career,” said Zagazeta.

“I’ve been testing with the team, which has been really fun, and I’ve been learning a lot so I’m sure that we can hit the ground running and have a great season together.

“The F4 British championship is a proven testing ground for drivers and has produced so many great talents and I aim to add my name to that list.”

Trevor Carlin underlined his belief Zagazeta will be a force to be reckoned with in the Ford EcoBoost-powered category next season and is excited to follow the Peruvian’s development out of karting.

“Matias is the perfect example of a young driver stepping out of karts into his first season of car racing, with everything to learn,” explained Carlin.

“It’s most rewarding for us to work with drivers at this point in their career when they are making this very big step up.

“Matias is already responding very well in testing and is learning so much with every day on track.  With his ability and attitude I’m sure he’ll be a strong competitor when the 2020 season kicks off. I’m excited to see his potential as the programme unfolds.”

Once again in 2020, the F4 British Championship holds a unique position as the only single-seater support category on the UK’s premier motorsport package – the British Touring Car Championship.

That means Zagazeta will race in front of capacity crowds at eight of the UK’s most challenging and iconic venues, along with live, free-to-air television coverage on ITV4.

The next generation of motorsport stars will battle it out for the category’s £35,000 Scholarship Award on 5th November and beyond that, another action-packed, 30-race campaign begins at Donington Park on 28-29 March, 2020.
