Oliver Gray smashes lap record en route to maiden poles at Thruxton

Oliver Gray set a new lap record en route to his maiden two pole positions in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost in qualifying at Thruxton this morning (Sat 28 Aug).

A fastest time of 1:12.909 for the Fortec Motorsport racer, over two tenths clear of the previous benchmark time, around the high-speed, 2.35-mile Hampshire venue proved enough to win out an ultra-competitive session between Ford’s rising stars.

Gray’s closest challenger was Phinsys by Argenti’s Matias Zagazeta, the Peruvian setting a time just 0.017s slower than Gray to secure his spot on the front row for the opening race later this afternoon (13:40 BST).

The second row will be shared between Zagazeta’s team-mate Eduardo Coseteng after a season-best showing in qualifying for the Filipino racer, with championship leader Matthew Rees – on pole twice here in May’s season opener – fourth in the fastest of JHR’s challengers.

Steven Hunter’s outfit continued their strong recent form at Thruxton with McKenzy Cresswell, Abbi Pulling and Joseph Loake taking fifth, sixth and eighth respectively, the only driver able to split the trio being Joel Granfors in the other Fortec challenger.

Aiden Neate (Argenti) continued his strong start to life in Britain’s FIA Formula 4 series with the ninth-fastest time, the top ten runners completed by Carlin’s leading contender in Dougie Bolger.

His new team-mate and Rees’ chief title rival James Hedley was 11th on his competitive debut for the Farnham-based squad; the BRDC Rising Star will take some solace from his previous slipstreaming antics, having won from the fifth row on home turf earlier in the campaign.

Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak (Carlin) set an identical time to Zak Taylor (Arden Motorsport) in 12th and 13th, but gets the higher position by virtue of having set the lap time earlier in the 20-minute session.

Marcos Flack rounded out Argenti’s quartet in 14th spot, the field completed by Kai Askey (Carlin) and David Morales (Arden), who will share the front row for the reverse grid contest at 17:15 this afternoon.
