2 February, 2015 – The first tests of the new Ford EcoBoost-powered MSA Formula cars have been successfully undertaken, several teams braving a cold – and snowy – Rockingham last week for shakedowns and driver familiarisation sessions.
The Carlin, Fortec and JTR teams were all in action at the Northamptonshire speedway. Carlin gave its young charges Lando Norris, Colton Herta and Petru Florescu their first experiences of the Mygale-built carbonfibre Formula 4 chassis, with JTR putting its first signing, James Pull, in the driving seat.
“I covered 65 laps,” said Hertfordshire-based James, 15, “with the day cut slightly short when snow started to fall in the second-to-last session. I was pleased with how it went – I improved with each session and got a good feel for the chassis and tyres. It was my first time in the MSA Formula car, but not my first time in a single-seater as I tested one of JTR’s Formula Fords and raced at the F1 track in Malaysia late last year in a Formula BMW.
“I liked Rockingham – it was fast and flowing – and I am looking forward to racing there later in the season. I am looking forward to all the tracks, especially Brands Hatch GP and Silverstone.” James plans to be out on track again next week, fitting his testing duties in around GCSE studies.
