- Youngest-ever world kart champion signs with Carlin squad for new Ford EcoBoost-powered championship
12 December, 2014 – Karting World Champion Lando Norris is today confirmed as the first driver to secure a seat with the crack Carlin team for next year’s MSA Formula – Certified by FIA, Powered by Ford EcoBoost. The 15-year-old will be one of the youngest on the grid when Britain’s newest and most exciting junior single-seater championship blasts into action at Brands Hatch in April.
Said Lando: “I’m really excited to be driving with Carlin next year. They are a great team with a brilliant history and I can’t wait to get going. You have only to look at the list of names they have helped through the years – like Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo – to know you are in good hands with a chance to progress to the top.”
Norris, who first started competing in karts aged seven, enjoyed a brilliantly successful 2014 season, clinching the CIK FIA KF World Championship to make history as the youngest-ever karting World Championship winner. He also contested the Ginetta Junior Championship, taking four race wins and eight podiums on his way to third overall and the honours for top rookie.
“Lando is an amazing young talent and has huge potential,” says team boss Trevor Carlin. “We’re delighted to have him in the team and look forward to helping him reach his goals next season. It’s a testament to the MSA in making the championship eligible to 15-year-olds that we’re able to keep talent like Lando in the UK at the start of his single-seater career.”
Norris is the first of Carlin’s MSA Formula drivers to be revealed; the identities of his team-mates are due to be unveiled soon.
MSA Formula – Certified by FIA, Powered by Ford EcoBoost is Britain’s official version of the FIA’s Formula 4 concept and will be the British Touring Car Championship’s single-seater support series, enjoying live TV coverage and bumper raceday spectator attendance. Twelve teams – Arden Motorsport, Carlin, Double R Racing, Falcon Motorsport, Fortec Motorsport, JHR Developments, JTR, MBM Motorsport, Richardson Racing, Scorpio Motorsport, SWB Motorsport and Team Pyro – have bought the 32 Ford EcoBoost-powered chassis available for the coming season.
The championship will be decided over 30 races; three at each of the 10 BTCC meetings to be held between April and October.
Carlin is one of the largest teams outside Formula 1, with race winning experience in a variety of championships including British F3, Porsche Supercup, World Series by Nissan, Formula Renault 3.5, A1GP, FIA Formula 3 European Championship, GP3 Series and GP2 Series. Some of today’s most successful drivers have passed through the team, including racers in F1, IndyCar, WTCC and DTM. F1 drivers such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Kevin Magnussen and Max Chilton amongst others, add up to a third of the current F1 field who are former Carlin alumni.
