- Double R Racing record one-two in both free practice sessions, with Jewiss fastest from Tonteri.
8 JUNE, 2018 – Double R Racing got off to a perfect start at Oulton Park in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost, by recording a one-two in both free practice sessions led by Kiern Jewiss from Paavo Tonteri.
Free practice two saw faster times throughout the field, but it was free practice one pacesetter Jewiss who remained on top with team-mate Tonteri close behind.
Tonteri was the first driver to break the 1m 23s barrier, stealing an early march in the session. Jewiss responded however with less than 10 minutes on the clock to post a lap time of 1m 22.537s.
“It’s been a really good day for us,” said Jewiss. “The car has been excellent and Double R are looking really strong. Hopefully we can carry this into qualifying.
“I looked through a lot of video and data from previous seasons before arriving here as part of my preparation and that’s put me on a really good footing for this weekend.
“You have to be inch perfect around here because there is so little run off and overtaking will be hard so qualifying is going to probably be the most important session of the weekend.
“I’m really keen to get my first pole position in British F4, so to do it here where qualifying matters even more would be extra special.”
Added Tonteri: “It will be great if we can carry this pace into the rest of the weekend to get a really strong result for the team.
“The car feels amazing. Double R have done a fantastic job. The car is great on longer runs too. I did my best time on old tyres so that bodes well.
“Hopefully I can turn around the positions and be faster than Kiern. He’s doing a really good job so far this weekend so it won’t be easy.
“Kiern found some time on the new tyres and I made a mistake on my fastest lap. That was the difference between us today.
“It’s been close between us all season and in testing so I cannot see that changing this weekend or during the rest of the year.”
Arden were hot on the heels of the Double R duo with Dennis Hauger and Patrik Pasma. The latter proved quickest of the pair in free practice one, but in the second session Hauger turned the tables to record the third fastest time of the day. Both Pasma and Hauger joined Jewiss and Tonteri as the only drivers able to lap in the 1m 22s bracket.
Championship leader Ayrton Simmons (JHR Developments) had a solid day behind the wheel. Fifth fastest in both sessions and setting himself up for another weekend where he’s sure to be in the mix for top honours.
Arden’s Sebastian Priaulx wound up sandwiched on the timesheet in seventh by Fortec Motorsports’ Johnathan Hoggard and Hampus Ericsson.
Elsewhere, Sebastian Alvarez ensured all Double R Racing-prepared cars ended the day inside the top 10 ahead of Josh Skelton (JHR Developments), while technical gremlins restricted running for Jamie Sharp (Sharp Motorsport) and Manuel Sulaiman (JHR Developments).
Saturday’s schedule kicks off with official qualifying in the morning at 1030 followed by the first race of the weekend at 1445. Rounds 11 and 12 of the F4 British Championship will take place on Sunday at 1300 and 1745 respectively, with round 11 broadcast live on ITV4.
