Arden Motorsport’s Alex Connor soaked up pressure from both title contenders to claim a third victory of the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost season in the penultimate race at Brands Hatch.
Connor pounced to the inside of fellow Red Arrow and pole-sitter Frederick Lubin at Paddock Hill Bend on the third lap of the race, which started under safety car conditions due to a rain-soaked Indy circuit.
That left Lubin to fight for the runner-up spot with a fast-starting Abbi Pulling (JHR), but their battle was quickly suspended, the race neutralised to recover Matias Zagazeta (Carlin) and Roberto Faria (Fortec)’s cars from the Paddock gravel trap after a first corner coming together.
On the restart, both dropped behind a three-car train led by Zak O’Sullivan, but suspicions he passed Carlin team-mate and newly-crowned Rookie champion Christian Mansell under yellow flags before the safety car will be investigated post-race, and could yet see him take a penalty.
Browning was also able to get past the Australian and into third spot, and from there both he and O’Sullivan set about catching Connor.
Though O’Sullivan closed to within range and tried an opportunistic lunge into Clearways on the final lap, he was ultimately powerless to stop Connor taking a third victory of the 2020 season by 0.646 seconds.
O’Sullivan’s second-place provisionally moves him to within four points of Browning, third, at the championship summit, with the two set to share the front row in this afternoon’s season finale at 14:27 (GMT) on ITV4.
Mansell eventually took fourth, ahead of JHR’s James Hedley, with Arden’s Frederick Lubin – the other Rookie finisher – in sixth.
Abbi Pulling took seventh in the other JHR challenger, beating Argenti’s Casper Stevenson by just under a second.
Reema Juffali (Argenti) and Arden’s Roman Bilinski complete the points scorers, and finishers for Round 25.
