Christian Mansell takes plenty of satisfaction from his debut weekend in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost, the highlight for the Australian a sublime charge to fifth in race two.
Mansell’s first triple header on British shores had it’s highs and lows; a time penalty for jumping the start in the season opener was quickly forgotten about after an inspired drive in the reverse grid contest.
Having initially clashed with JHR’s Nathanael Hodgkiss and ended up in the gravel at Coppice, a red flag gave Mansell an opportunity to get his Carlin challenger back to the grid to take the restarted race.
He then set about moving through the pack, banking a solid fifth-placed finish to open his account in the series, which he then followed up with sixth in the ITV4-televised finale on Sunday afternoon.
Mansell also lies in fourth in the Rookie Cup standings, tied with Carlin team mate Matias Zagazeta on 45 points apiece, with his points-scoring exploits also enough to earn him two class podiums – third and then second.
“Overall it has been a really successful weekend where we’ve had some great results and almost more importantly, gained lots of experience and improved every time we have been behind the wheel,” says Mansell.
“I was a little bit frustrated with how qualifying went but I think we showed that we can compete in the races. Obviously taking a time penalty wasn’t ideal in race one but to manage to make it to the restart in race two and fight our way to fifth was amazing.
“Race three was a lot of fun; I had some good battles and made quite a big move towards the end which I was quite proud of. We can leave Donington Park with our heads held high and I can’t wait to head to Brands Hatch now – I’m confident we can build on this weekend’s results.”
British F4 resumes at Brands Hatch (GP) over the weekend of 08-09 August.
