Fortec Motorsport racer Chris Lulham expects even closer competition in the next British F4 iRacing Trophy event at Brands Hatch after a hard-fought season-opener at Donington Park set the tone for the series ahead.
After locking out the front row with team mate Luke Browning, Lulham powered clear to win the opening race, a sublime dive to the inside of Browning at McLeans enough to give him top spot ahead of Zak O’Sullivan (Carlin) and Roman Bilinski (Arden).
His progress in the reverse grid race was interrupted after getting caught up in a midfield incident; Lulham duly pitted and returned to the track to salvage the final point in tenth, putting him third overall in the standings after the opening event.
Reflecting on Monday night’s events, and looking ahead to the next thrilling double-header in the Dallara F3, Lulham said translating a lot of real-world opponents into sim racing was interesting, and said that experience also made overtaking a challenge.
“The racing on Monday as a whole was good fun, having so many names I know from real life on a virtual grid was interesting for me,” said Lulham.
“The pace at the front was very close and competitive, and I expect it to be even closer at Brands Hatch.
“The starts were very important, with overtaking being difficult when the whole grid are experienced at wheel-to-wheel racing.
“My first race was close and looked to be a good fight until Browning made a small mistake due to understeer in the dirty air.
“My chance for a good result in race two [went] after another driver drove off the track and spun back on to the track, taking out multiple cars. I managed to pit for repairs and recover a point with a couple of laps left.”
Spectators can watch the next two rounds of the iRacing Trophy on British F4’s YouTube channel, with the action next scheduled to start at 19:30 (BST) on Monday, 4th May.
