Carter Williams says podiums are possible on British F4 debut

• JHR Developments’ racer confident of securing silverware on F4 British Championship debut.
• Mixed conditions and a different tyre strategy gave the American racer plenty to contend with in qualifying.
• Opening race of the new campaign set to begin at 15:50 UK time.

JHR Developments’ Carter Williams believes a podium finish on his F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost debut is within reach after qualifying fourth at Brands Hatch.

Only a front-row lockout from returning outfit Carlin and experienced contender Sebastian Alvarez stood in the American’s way of top spot in a qualifying session hit with changeable conditions and a damp-then-drying track surface.

Williams broke the trend, pitting later for new tyres at the end of his first run, before putting in some blistering laps in the closing exchanges to post a 46.454s around the 1.20-mile Indy circuit, a mere 0.077s from pole position.

That performance also means the 20-year old from California will start the final race – televised live nationwide on ITV4 – from the second row of the grid in third.

“We stayed out a little longer than the others, I think we were the last ones out, but I came in for tyres, spent a little bit of time warming them up and the car came to me at the end,” explained Williams.

“At the beginning of the session the track was really cold and slippery, but by the end it was like any other day really – it was more warming the car up to the track.”

“We’re definitely aiming for a podium in the opening race – that’s our goal. It’s good to see we’re only a tenth off and it’s always really close here, so I think that’s definitely possible.

The opening race of the new season is scheduled to get underway at 15:50.
