Caroline comes to the fore in British F4 testing

  • Late flyer to claim top spot rounds off excellent testing performance from Jamie Caroline.
  • Lundqvist, Piastri, Sargeant and Simmons continue impressive testing form.
  • Monger and JHR immediately on the pace, as they take part in their first official pre-season test of 2017.

6 MARCH, 2017 – A sun-kissed Donington Park was the scene for the latest act in the battle for pre-season testing honours in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford. All signs suggest another remarkably competitive season and on this occasion it was Jamie Caroline’s turn to star at the top of the timesheet; courtesy of a late flyer which put him just under two tenths of a second clear of Double R Racing’s Linus Lundqvist.

Caroline’s time of 1m 8.106s would have earned him a front row grid slot in qualifying at Donington Park last season, just 0.094s off pole. The Warlingham racer has been testing with reigning champions Carlin during pre-season and he once again underlined his credentials.

Swedish single-seater champion Lundqvist continued his fine testing form and the same can be said of fellow newcomers Oscar Piastri (TRS Arden) and Logan Sargeant (Carlin). The latter fastest in the morning session.

Billy Monger wasted no time getting reacquainted with his JHR-prepared Ford EcoBoost-powered racer in his first official pre-season test of 2017. Third fastest and a spell at the top of the times suggests that the Barnardo’s children’s charity ambassador has lost none of his speed during the winter break.

Another British F4 returnee, TRS Arden’s Ayrton Simmons, also impressed. Third quickest in the morning. The 15-year-old ended the test sixth overall.

Meanwhile, 2016 British F4 Rookie Champion Alex Quinn was on hand in the afternoon to conduct evaluation work for TRS Arden, recording the seventh quickest time.

The Fortec Motorsports pre-season testing double-act of Oliver York and Johnathan Hoggard wound up eighth and ninth fastest respectively, whilst Harry Webb also finished inside the top 10. The 19-year-old demonstrated his speed in both wet and dry conditions testing with Richardson Racing.

The progress of 2017 Ford F4 Challenge Cup contender Olli Caldwell shows no sign of relenting after another strong showing, with Carlin’s Patrik Pasma just over a tenth behind him in 12th.

The latest driver to officially join the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford, Manuel Sulaimán, put in a solid day’s work for JHR, just under a second and half off of the quickest time.

Elsewhere Double R’s Daniel Cao racked up an impressive 136 laps, equalling team-mate Lundqvist’s tally for the day, with stablemate Karl Massaad just 0.025s slower than Cao.

GW Motorsport’s Jacky Liu made consistent progress throughout the day’s running and recorded his best time on his very last lap, putting him just over a tenth adrift of Carlin’s Lucas Alecco Roy.

Jamie Sharp was a big improver. The Sharp Motorsport driver’s best time came in the afternoon and put him over a tenth clear of Falcon Motorsport’s Lucca Allen as both gathered valuable mileage and data for their teams.

F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford teams and drivers have a quick turnaround following the excitement of Donington Park, with the next official pre-season test taking place tomorrow at Brands Hatch Indy circuit.
