British F4 racer Josh Skelton awarded Motorsport UK Academy status

F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost racer Josh Skelton has been selected to join the ranks on Motorsport UK’s prestigious Academy scheme.

The initiative, designed to support the next generation of British motorsport talents as they rise through the ranks, offers a tailored approach to driver development and provides some on-event support to help put that tuition into practice.

Skelton has already put the experience of his rookie season in Ford’s winning formula to good use in 2019, notching up his first two podiums in the category at Donington Park and Thruxton respectively. He currently sits fifth overall in the points, 64 points adrift of standings leader Louis Foster.

2018 Vice-Champion Ayrton Simmons – already a race winner in BRDC British Formula 3 since his graduation from Britain’s FIA-sanctioned Formula 4 category – has also been selected to join the programme.

“I’m very happy to be selected as one of the sixteen young drivers to have a place on the Motorsport UK Academy,” said Skelton.

“This is a massive opportunity that I’m looking forward to taking on board to help me develop as a racing driver.

“I can’t wait for the first meet-up and to meet everyone else who is involved. I just want to say a massive thank you to Motorsport UK for giving me this opportunity and I’m going to make the most of it.”

“We were inundated with applications and the sheer volume of high-quality drivers made it a difficult process to whittle down to the final sixteen,” explained Motorsport UK’s Competitor Pathway Manager Greg Symes.

“We are delighted to announce our new intake and we have a great group and a real mix of drivers from many categories in the sport.

“The Motorsport UK team and coaches are looking forward to working with them over the next couple of years and developing their skillset to progress their careers.”

Skelton’s next competitive outing will be the Croft triple-header, scheduled to take place over the weekend of 15th-16th June.
