Brazilian Rafa Martins chooses Ford EcoBoost power

04 Mar 15
  • Young Brazilian karter signs with SWB Motorsport for MSA Formula campaign
  • Joins Jack Butel in SWB’s two-car campaign
  • Fifth different nationality to opt for Ford-backed junior single-seater category

4 March, 2015 – Teenage Brazilian karting star Rafa Martins is set to follow in the wheeltracks of many of his country’s racing heroes, including Ayrton Senna, by starting his car-racing career in Britain at the wheel of a Ford-powered single-seater.

Martins,16, has signed to contest the forthcoming MSA Formula season with the SWB Motorsport team, and enjoyed his first taste of the Ford EcoBoost-engined FIA-certified Formula 4 car at Brands Hatch last week, and was in action at Snetterton on Monday, impressing SWB team manager Simon Baldry:

“It was Rafa’s first proper experience of a racing car and he acquitted himself well. Brands Hatch was very wet and not a great learning experience but the Snetterton test was dry and very productive and he covered 70 laps. We were happy with the times he did and with the feedback he gave us about the new car; he’s a sensible lad and he does what he’s told, and I think he will be one to watch as the season progresses.”

Martins will partner BARC Formula Renault graduate Jack Butel in the two-car SWB Motorsport team in MSA Formula. Daventry-based SWB was formed in 2010 by motorsport engineering graduate Baldry after several seasons of service with Fortec Motorsport. The team has won races in club-level Formula Renault and has enjoyed considerable karting success, as well as Scholarship podium finishes in Formula Ford during 2013 and ’14.

040315Martins2wThere is just a month to go before the live-televised opening rounds of MSA Formula at Brands Hatch (4/5 April), and a remarkable field of rookie racing talent is gathering to contest it, including 15-year-old British karting champions Enaam Ahmed, Sandy Mitchell, Lando Norris, Josh Smith and Dan Ticktum. Martins is the fifth different nationality of driver to announce his participation, joining pilots from the UK, Romania, India and the USA.

MSA Formula – Certified by FIA, Powered by Ford EcoBoost is Britain’s official version of the FIA’s Formula 4 concept and will be the British Touring Car Championship’s single-seater support series, enjoying live TV coverage and bumper raceday spectator attendance.

The championship will be decided over 30 races; three at each of the 10 BTCC meetings to be held between April and October. The winning driver will hold the title FIA Formula 4 Champion of Great Britain, and will earn 10 Grand Prix Superlicence points to get his or her career off to a flying start, in addition to being awarded a career-enhancing test drive with a leading FIA Formula 3 team.

Ticktum is the Snetterton testing pacesetter

  •  Daniel Ticktum quickest in Norfolk for Fortec team
  • Carlin men Norris and Herta run him closest

SNETTERTON, 2 March, 2015 – Fortec driver Daniel Ticktum showed his young rivals a clean pair of heels at Snetterton today, topping the timesheets in both MSA Formula test sessions. Collard on top in the dry, Norris in the wet at Brands

26 Feb 15
  • Arden’s Ricky Collard leads the Ford EcoBoost runners in morning test
  • Carlin’s Lando Norris quickest in the afternoon’s wet conditions
  • Consistently quick showings in both sessions from Colton Herta, Dan Baybutt

BRANDS HATCH, 26 February, 2015 – Formula Ford veteran Ricky Collard made the best of the weather today on the Brands Indy circuit to secure the best time in the first against-the-clock collective test session of the MSA Formula season.

Ricky accelerated to the top of the timesheets in his Ford EcoBoost-powered Arden-prepared car in the drier morning session, outpacing his closest rival, JTR’s Dan Baybutt, by nine-hundredths of a second. Just 0.5s covered the top seven drivers in the morning session; Colton Herta, Carlin’s young American, was third quickest in the dry, ahead of Fortec’s new signing Dan Ticktum, Arden driver Sandy Mitchell and Carlin’s Lando Norris.

Lando Norris

Collard’s best lap was 52.574s, and the Hampshireman was pleased with his performance: “To be honest we were just following our running plan and working through our test programme; we were not too fussed what times were being set, so be at the top is no bad thing… The car feels good: the aero package, the mechanical grip and the way the Ford engine is working is so efficient, it’s awesome and I’m really enjoying driving it.”

In the streaming wet afternoon session it was Carlin running mates Norris and Herta who led the way, with Lando popping in an impressive 54.576s after 59 laps of afternoon running. On his 64th and final lap of the session Herta responded with a 54.999s. JTR team-mates James Pull and Baybutt were third and fourth fastest in the wet.

Sennan Fielding joins Ford EcoBoost-powered MSA Formula series

25 Feb 15
  • McLaren Autosport Award finalist Sennan Fielding signed by top team JHR Developments

Sennan Fielding25 February, 2015 – McLaren Autosport Award finalist Sennan Fielding is to switch to Ford turbo power for the coming season. The 19-year-old will race with the JHR Developments team at the wheel of one of its EcoBoost-engined MSA Formula cars.

The Dronfield-based team will run two cars in the Ford-backed championship, and 19-year-old Fielding, from Chesterfield, is the first of its drivers to be confirmed. Sennan raced for the squad in 2012, his maiden season car racing, when he netted runner-up spot in the Ginetta Junior Championship.

Says Fielding: “We were evaluating a few different avenues for this year to move my career forward, and while I had options in GT racing too, I was keen to remain in single-seaters and to get some more experience under my belt. When JHR approached us about racing in MSA Formula, it was immediately of interest because it’s a new championship with a lot of potential and the right people behind it. The BTCC support package is clearly the place to be as a young British driver; it’s a superb shop window and offers unrivalled exposure, with more than 20 million people tuning in live on ITV4 – and that in turn makes it easier to attract sponsors.”

JHR team principal Steven Hunter added: “I’m absolutely delighted to have Sennan back with us at JHR. We enjoyed a lot of success together in 2012, and watched him grow and progress in single-seaters last year – so when the opportunity arose for us to work together again, we were keen to see if we could help Sennan stay in single-seaters in 2015. He is not only an extremely gifted driver but also a great guy out of the car with an impeccable work ethic, and I have no doubt that his experience and ability will play a key role in helping us to develop JHR’s budding single-seater arm.

“MSA Formula is an exciting new championship, and single-seaters are an exciting new challenge for us – and we couldn’t have a better driver on board than Sennan as we target consistently strong results over the 2015 campaign.”

Fielding was honoured as the Racing Steps Foundation MSA Young Driver of the Year in 2013 and last season he competed in the BRDC’s single-seater series, claiming fourth overall with four race wins. Those results led to his selection as one of the six finalists for the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award.

JHR Developments is one of the most successful teams in junior British motorsport, having claimed eight championship titles since its foundation in 1995 as well as the honour of having been the first team to win a race in every support series on the BTCC bill.

The motive power for the MSA Formula chassis is the 1.6-litre DI turbocharged EcoBoost – a mainstay of Ford’s performance car range. It is a 160 PS development of the unit which successfully powered Formula Ford in Britain between 2012 and ’14, designed and manufactured by Ford in Britain and supplied at a price to meet the FIA’s mandated price cap.

Karting star Ticktum confirmed for MSA Formula

24 Feb 15
  • 15-year-old Daniel Ticktum joins his karting rival Josh Smith at Fortec Motorsports for his first car-racing experience
  • Team says there’s ‘no question’ about his talent at the wheel

240215_ticktumw24 February, 2015 – Another superstar driver from the world of karting is to step up to car racing with MSA Formula. The crack Fortec Motorsports team today announces that 15-year-old Daniel Ticktum is to join its squad this season to race one of its Ford EcoBoost-powered chassis.

Sussex-based Ticktum rose to prominence in cadet karting in 2011, when he won the ‘grand slam’ of four national titles, including Formula Kart Stars and the British Open Championship. Two seasons later he finished second in the CIK FIA European championship and British Super One. Last year he contested the WSK Champions Cup with Zanardi Strakka Racing.

He’s excited to be taking on the challenge of the FIA-certified MSA Formula championship: “It’s amazing to make the step up from karting and I’m really happy to have signed with Fortec to race in the new MSA Formula. It’s the perfect place to kick-start my single-seater career. I’ve already done a bit of pre-season testing and the car feels great.”

Fortec team manager Daniel Mitchell said of his new charge: “It’s a great signing for Fortec: there’s absolutely no question of his talent so it is down to us now to provide him with the equipment. Pre-season testing so far has been positive but we feel as a team there is still a lot more to come.” Fortec is one of the largest and most successful teams contesting MSA Formula, with a long history of victories in Renault World Series, Formula 3, Formula Renault and GT racing.

Ticktum is the seventh teenage British karting frontrunner to opt for MSA Formula as the launchpad for their car-racing careers. Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver Josh Smith will be Daniel’s Fortec running mate, while the Carlin team has signed Lando Norris and TRS Arden have Sandy Mitchell and Enaam Ahmed on board. JTR will meanwhile field James Pull and Dan Baybutt.

Frontrunners for the inaugural MSA Formula crown will take part in the first collective test of the season on Thursday at Brands Hatch, gaining vital experience of the Kent circuit which will host the opening rounds of the live-televised championship 4/5 April.

JTR signs Daniel Baybutt for its MSA Formula team

11 Feb 15
  • First tests next week for 17-year-old karter, who joins James Pull in championship-winning team

Daniel Baybutt11 February, 2015 – The JTR team has lined up another young karting talent for its assault on the MSA Formula championship. Seventeen-year-old Daniel Baybutt will get his first taste of the Ford EcoBoost-powered MSA Formula chassis on Monday at Silverstone, with a further three days of track time planned for later in the week.

The Southport, Lancashire-based driver comes to car racing with an impressive karting pedigree: he was third in the MSA Super One Junior TKM Championship in 2012 and ’13, and last year finished fifth in Super One Formula KGP.

His talent is without question, says JTR team boss Nick Tandy: “Dan came to test with us over the winter and impressed in some difficult track conditions. It was remarkable how well he could handle a car at such an early stage in his career. Dan is a great addition to the JTR team because he is used to success in motor sport already and we plan to keep up our winning tradition in 2015 in the new MSA Formula.”

Baybutt, who works on the family arable farm, chose JTR for its family feel and impressive track record, Tandy’s squad having won British Formula Ford for the last three seasons. “Like my family, the Tandys have a background in farming and we all get along really well,” said Daniel. “I am looking on this move into car racing as a two-year plan; it will be a steep learning curve but I am looking forward to the challenge.”

Daniel and his JTR team-mate James Pull have four days of testing scheduled for the coming week, with a visit to the super-fast Thruxton circuit on the agenda following the Silverstone shakedown.

Josh Smith

9 February, 2015 – Racing Steps Foundation driver Josh Smith, 15, is the latest to announce his participation in MSA Formula 2015. The reigning IAME X30 international kart champion from Arnside, Cumbria, will contest the Ford EcoBoost-powered and FIA-certified Formula 4 championship with the Fortec Motorsports team.

“It’s a really exciting challenge for me,” said Smith, who has raced international KFJ class karts with RSF backing for the past two years. “Last year in karting was a pretty frustrating one which thankfully I managed to end on a high with the IAME X30 title. The aim now is to put that difficult year behind me and focus on doing the best job I can for me and the RSF. I’ll be racing with a top team and will hopefully be able to show what I’m really capable of.”

Racing Steps Foundation founder Graham Sharp added: “It will be a tough championship for Josh to cut his teeth on with so many established Formula Ford drivers and top karters lined up for seats on the grid. But Josh showed last year that he has the grit and determination to dig deep and perform even when the odds are stacked against him. With Fortec – which has a superb reputation for bringing on youngsters in junior formulae – the hope is that Josh will be able to hit the ground running.”

The Racing Steps Foundation is a private, not-for-profit fund that provides and finances competition and performance development programmes for young British racing drivers and motorcycle racers. The backing is provided for those with the exceptional talent and determination needed to climb to the top of the international motorsports ladder but who have neither the funds nor the all-important management and mentoring needed to get there.

In 2015 five drivers and two bike riders will race in UK, European and International race series with RSF backing.

MSA Formula test programme races ahead

08 Feb 15
  • TRS Arden and Team Pyro join the Carlin, Fortec and JTR squads with vital early pre-season testing laps
  • Ollie Pidgley confirms his championship registration as he and Ricky Collard enjoy their first MSA Formula laps
Ollie Pidgley/Pyro

Ollie Pidgley/Pyro

8 February, 2015 – At least five of the teams contesting this season’s inaugural MSA Formula championship have begun their pre-season testing programmes, with Team Pyro and the TRS Arden squad the latest to shake down their Ford EcoBoost-powered chassis.

The Carlin, Fortec and JTR teams were the first out of the box, making good use of relatively good weather conditions at Rockingham to give their drivers an initial taste of the FIA-certified Formula 4 chassis built by Mygale. The Silverstone circuit then played host on Friday (6 Feb) to Pyro and Arden.

Seventeen-year-old Ollie Pidgley was one of the first drivers to put his name down for a car at the September launch event, and last week became the latest to confirm his registration for MSA Formula. Two days later the Hampshireman ended his long wait to get behind the wheel, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience: “The car was finished at 3am Friday and was at Silverstone by 9am for its shakedown. Of course there were some teething issues, but nothing more serious than a minor misfire. Really the test was about making sure that I was comfortable in the car, and we covered around 40 laps in total.”

This will be Ollie’s first season of single-seater racing: he cut his teeth in cadet karting and raced last year in club saloons. His familiarisation programme started late last year with some tests in an old Formula Renault chassis. He was impressed by many of the features of the MSA Formula car: “First impressions are really good. The paddle shift is great and a real step in the right direction, and I have been making good use of the data download system and on-board camera. I was pleased to find a lot more room in the cockpit than in the Formula Renault; it’s user-friendly from a driver’s point of view, and it all looks well designed and built.” Pidgley’s next scheduled outing is likely to be mid-month at his home circuit of Thruxton.

Ricky Collard/TRS Arden

Ricky Collard/TRS Arden

Eighteen-year-old Collard, who was Formula Ford Scholarship class runner-up in his maiden season of car racing, was enthusiastic about his first outing with TRS Arden: “It was a great first test, and a real credit to the team that there were no major problems with the car straight from the box. We managed four 20-lap runs, and everything went as well as it could have.

“It’s a fantastic car and I really enjoyed driving it; it had the same general feel as the Formula Ford that I am used to, but it’s bigger in the cockpit and for a driver that’s really nice. We’ve taken some useful data to look at and, once we have done that, we will fix a date for a further test, possibly at Thruxton.”

The Carlin squad and its drivers Colton Herta, Lando Norris and Petru Florescu will be back on the testing trail in the coming days, getting to grips with the Knockhill circuit in Scotland.

MSA Formula – Certified by FIA, Powered by Ford EcoBoost is Britain’s official version of the FIA’s Formula 4 concept and will be the British Touring Car Championship’s single-seater support series, enjoying live TV coverage and bumper raceday spectator attendance. The winning driver will hold the title FIA Formula 4 Champion of Great Britain, and will earn 10 Grand Prix Superlicence points to get his or her career off to a flying start, in addition to being awarded a career-enhancing test drive with a leading FIA Formula 3 team.

James Pull joins champion team JTR for MSA Formula

09 Jan 15
  • Fifteen-year-old Tony Kart Racing Team driver switches from karts to cars and picks the EcoBoost experts from JTR to aid his campaign

090115_pulljw9 January, 2015 – Reigning Formula Ford champion team JTR has confirmed the identity of its first driver for the new MSA Formula championship. He is 15-year-old karting star James Pull, who is hoping that JTR’s skill and expertise in getting the most from Ford’s EcoBoost power unit will gain him an advantage when the championship gets underway at Brands Hatch in just under three months time.

Born in Singapore to his Malaysian Chinese mother and British father, James came to the UK in 2012 for education – he attends Hertfordshire’s Haileybury College, following in the wheeltracks of Sir Stirling Moss – and to further his motorsport career, which started aged eight in Singapore.

His karting successes include finishing championship runner-up in the Yamaha SL Cup Malaysia and the Asian Karting Open Championship in 2010 and victory in the Rotax Max Singapore series the following season. Since moving to Europe he has raced in cadets with Emilia Kart and then in KF3/KF-Junior with Chiesa Corse and then the Tony Kart Racing Team, always under the guidance of former Kart World Champion Oliver Oakes. In 2014 he was invited to join the McLaren Performance Academy, from which he graduated in December of last year.

KSP-James-Pull-La-ConcaJames is looking forward to the challenges presented by his switch to cars: “I am really excited to be joining JTR for the 2015 MSA Formula season. JTR drivers have won the British Formula Ford Championship for the past three years, and I am looking forward to working with Nick Tandy and the team. I am going to be working very hard between now and the first race at Brands Hatch in April to make sure that I am as fit and as competitive as possible.”

Team boss Tandy is hopeful of good things to come from his young charge: “James tested with JTR a few times at the end of last year and on the back of that we are delighted he will be joining us in the team. His preparation and commitment to starting his racing career in 2015 meant he was top of our list for winter testing and he didn’t disappoint. We have a solid test plan based around his schooling commitments so I’m sure we’ll be ready to go at Brands Hatch.” To James’s racing manager, Jon Bishop, JTR looks to be the perfect team: “We looked at the team last season and were very impressed with its history working with both the chassis and engine. In addition to this the whole environment was perfect for James. I am confident that JTR will be competitive, and Nick is a talented driver himself and a good guy for James to look up to as he continues in his development.”
