Arden Motorsport’s Alex Connor was left satisfied with a double podium and more solid points from the second round of the 2020 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost season at Brands Hatch GP.
The 16-year old YRDA-backed racer scored a pair of a front-row starts for Races 1 & 3 in Kent, coming away on both occasions with the final spot on the rostrum in third, narrowly behind chief title rivals Zak O’Sullivan (Carlin) and Luke Browning (Fortec) in both contests.
He backed that up with a solid fifth-place finish in a close-fought reverse grid race to come away from the 2.4-mile Kent circuit third overall in the standings, 33 points adrift of early leader O’Sullivan.
“After my best and worst F4 drives at Donington where I got my first British F4 win in race one, followed in race two by a DNF, I knew I needed to have a solid weekend and bag as many points as possible without taking risks,” explained Connor.
“Coming away with two P3 finishes and P5 in the reversed grid race, I am quite happy with the result.
“Brands GP is one of my favourite tracks, I got the double pole here last year in the wet so I was hoping to do well. I think everyone found it difficult to follow the car in front too closely as it caused handling problems which is why we didn’t see too much overtaking, certainly at the front of the grid after the first couple of laps.”
Looking ahead to the next round of Britain’s FIA Formula 4 series at Oulton Park, Cheshire on 22-23 August, Connor is hopeful of three great races, with three race victories to match on a circuit he enjoys.
“Oulton Park is another circuit which I enjoy, it is quite challenging but you can overtake, so I am hoping we will get some great races. Of course I will be wanting three wins, but I also know that consistency is very important for the championship race so I will need to race with my head.”
